Speaker 1: Today we're going to talk about the 2009 movie Dorian Gray based on the book The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I'm your host Steve and today I'm joined by Annie who is the writer of the blog five foot 2.
Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being on today and yeah thank you for having me. Yeah it's great. Can
Speaker 1: you tell us a little bit about your background and your biography and maybe some of your web sites and where we can find you.
Speaker 2: Well yeah. My my you all well is a falsehood to blog dot com and I'm a university student and I'm from Birmingham in England and I got my degrees in English and I'm going to do my Masters in film and write in and I'm pretty much very obsessed with Oscar Wilde and William Shakespeare. Sins of other life. Drama English it's open and it's all been incredibly good for me at the moment.
Speaker 1: The picture of Dorian Gray is actually more from books than your and in our conversations beforehand you say that this is the type of book that you like to revisit.
Speaker 2: Yeah I make a habit of reading this book at least once every month. I have done for the past probably about 10 years which means on time.
Speaker 1: Wow that's incredible. Well we'll start off with a brief introduction of the movie. This movie Dorian Gray is based on the 1890 classic. The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. This is a story of a handsome youth who is able to somehow maintain his beautiful exterior for many years but his spirit or core becomes completely the opposite rotten and corrupted. The tagline of the movie is forever young forever cursed. Just briefly the production details of the movies. This is all courtesy of Wikipedia. In the Internet Movie Database it was released in September of 2009 and it was filmed in various locations around London and England. It really has an incredibly rich and detailed background. It's directed by Oliver Parker with a runtime of about 112 minutes and Ed only received 43 percent rotten tomatoes from and met a critic which I thought was kind of surprising and it had a box office of 22 million dollars.
Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about the cast. Before we dig into the context of this movie because it is when you're talking about a book and a movie and a really detailed historical context that the movie and the book break out it's this becomes a little bit more complicated and maybe a little bit more fun as well. Just overall What were your impressions of the casting decisions of this movie.
Speaker 2: I think part of my overall OK decisions. I mean Baso was incredibly well cross Henry sort of Volkoff that I think...

00:00:00 Today we're going to talk about a movie called No why a 2014 movie produced by Darren Aronofsky who brought us movies such as pi The Wrestler which I'm Gary noted that he like that and I like that movie as well and several other great movies the runtime for this movie was two hours and 17 minutes or forever. I'm not sure it was. It was a close call it starred Russell Crowe Jennifer Connelly Russell Crowe as no wife. And he's a countryman of yours right. A fellow Australian.
00:00:39 Technically he's a Kiwi but we claim all New Zealand is as Australian.
00:00:42 Yeah he's really a versatile actor I've really enjoyed just about every movie I've seen him in although he's one of those actors like he's basically the Australian Tom Hanks.
00:00:55 He's in he's Russell Crowe in every movie in a slightly different Russell Crowe. But he's still Russell Crowe.
00:01:04 Yeah. I mean he almost has the same haircut in every movie the haircut and the beard that's he's Russell Crowe you know. But then you have Jennifer Connelly then you have Jennifer Connelly Noah's wife. Namah and Connelly She's an American actress and she's starred in movies of Marea various quality.
00:01:29 She won an Academy Award star opposite Russell Crowe and another Russell Crowe movie A Beautiful Mind but maybe that's another one for the future episode and then we have Ray Winstone starring as lovable right.
00:01:46 Ray Winstone an unknown. He stars as somebody named Tubal Cain who probably doesn't come up in your memories of Sunday school class but he's in there and he's really the ultimate bad guy of the movie. He really needs to take a couple of comedic roles but he's really he's typecast as a cockney gangster and he kind of plays one in this movie. He never really drops the Cockney accent at all. What did you think about old Ray in this movie....
