My friend Tasha is a one-of-a-kind entrepreneur with two successful companies (Imperfect Concepts and ICB Consults), with more launching later this year. Her mission is to empower a million small business owners, and I have no doubt she'll do that. She always has wise words to share and isn't sugar-coating anything. (Follow her Instagram for a taste.)

On Sunday night, she hosted a great discussion between female small business owners (on an Instagram post). In one of the comments, she recommended this video by Big Sean on the importance of focus.

He's sharing some deep wisdom that frankly I've been studying through some esoteric spiritual books and teachers. It all lines up with what he says in this video, so he must be studying the same stuff!

Such a fantastic song. Though it's a little sad that a protest song that's over 30 years old still has such a relevant message today.

Support Small Biz: Matcha Bar NYC Jul 29, 2015
    Show notes

For the past few months, I've been starting most mornings with a cup of matcha tea with honey and coconut milk. It tastes so great and it gives me a kick without giving me the jitters.

I adore the taste of coffee, but because I'm so sensitive it's very easy for me to OD on it. And it's hard to tell when I've overserved myself. One minute I'm in the coffee-clarity zone and the next minute I'm untethered, scattered & having caffeine tremors.

Needing a more gentle and reliable way to start my morning, and I chose to try matcha because:

    • it's a source of dietary fiber & chlorophyll
    • it contains Vitamin A, B-complex, C, E & K
    • it's rich in antioxidants including EGCg
    • it provides chromium, selenium, zinc & magnesium

I watched this video to learn how to prepare it:

The video above might make the preparation seem a bit complicated, but it's really not. It's quicker than making coffee and you don't have to wait for it to steep like other teas.

Now that I'm a few months into drinking it, I was curious about trying some other makers and varieties of matcha. Much to my surprise, my local shops only carry one variety. Yes, Peet's and Starbucks offer it, but that's not where I go for high-quality ingredients. If I only have one coffee, cocktail or tea, I like to make it a fancy one.

I searched online and found MatchaBar NYC. They sell just the powder, as well as starter kits. I contacted them asking if they'd put a special package together for me, and they were game. Here's what I got in the mail yesterday:

Matcha, bamboo scoop + sticker from MatchaBar NYC

Great customer service & fun packaging. I made my matcha this morning with the MatchaBar powder, and it was the best I've tried so far. Matcha is so easy, tasty and rich in nutrients, it's bound to keep increasing in popularity.

Are you a matcha drinker? If there are other brands I should try, let me know!

Music Monday: Purity Ring "Bodyache" Jul 27, 2015

I love this band so much. Their music makes me feel feelings and makes all the cells in my body move.

"Bodyache" is a favorite off their latest record Another Eternity, which I bought on clear vinyl. I love this comment on YouTube describing the song:

"this music feels like taking a submarine to the ocean floor and finding neon-colored aliens hosting an underwater dance party for all the sea creatures." (comment by David Dean Burkhart).

Here's a live version that sounds almost exactly like the recording:

This is my singalong summer jam.

There's some amazing makeup and clothing throughout the video, especially in the group scene at the end. Hats off to whomever styled and art directed this video.

There are some great quotes from Jidenna on his personal style in this post on FashionBomb. My favorite:

"I’m more concerned with the fit than fitting in."

Jidenna is part of Janelle Monáe's Wondaland, which is, at the surface, her record label imprint via Epic Records. Digging deeper it looks like a movement, a salon, a collective. I love the fun they're having, the creativity, how they value uniqueness, inclusiveness and joy. And the personal style is off the charts.

I'm fascinated by the evolution I've seen in Janelle Monáe, which I noticed with her latest single "Yoga". I liked what I saw from her from the first few years, but I didn't follow it closely. It felt a little remote. I loved the uniform suit she wore, and the reason why she wore it, but it didn't totally draw me in. Now that she's taken the suit off and gone in this new (to me) direction, I'm hooked. My perception of her went from two dimensions to three dimensions. I want to know everything. I want to go to Wondaland.

STAY TREW, citizens of Wondaland. STAY TREW.

    Music Monday: Jessie J Jul 13, 2015
    Show notes

I'm usually not a pop music fan, but I blame my love for hiphop dance classes for making me fall for Jessie J.

In a class a few years ago, we danced to "Do It Like A Dude" and I was hooked. This song makes me feel feelings every time.

Normally I'm really turned off by a female pop singer who's not wearing any pants, because normally the fact that she's not wearing pants is distracting from the fact that she can't actually sing or write.

Jessie J is an exception to that rule. The quality of her voice in live recordings is astonishing. It's almost better than her voice in studio recordings (which is an exception to yet another rule).

When I loaded up an iPod to go in my studio where I work, I happened to add Jessie J's album Who You Are onto it, and I haven't updated that iPod in awhile. So I've heard the album over and over and over.

Another of her songs that gets me every time is this live version of "Who You Are". It's a beautiful song, with a beautiful message of staying trew. But it's the last 45 seconds or so that make me cry every time. The part where the guy yells out and, in the moment, she reacts by telling everyone to shout out their own name.

Hearing Jessie J say "be a go getter" to in her British accent is oddly sweet and motivating.
