Many of you know James Hobson from his wildly popular YouTube channel Hacksmith Industries. James has a degree in mechanical systems engineering and runs Hacksmith Industries, a company he founded that takes fictional ideas from comics, movies and video games and makes real working prototypes as a way to inspire youth around the world into STEAM fields. A few of the amazing projects he and his team have completed over the years include a working Ironman helmet with heads up display, a half scale Tesla Cybertruck, a functioning light saber, Wolverine claws, Thor’s hammer, an electromagnetic arm bracer for a Captain America shield, and a Batman grappling hook gun…this is not an exhaustive list and there are plenty of other projects I encourage our listeners to check out on his YouTube channel Hacksmith Industries

S2E39 Processes For Life & Business, McDonalds Ideas, & Feel Good vs Real Good | Joel Williams Sep 10, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Joel and I met in college where we were roommates and both earned a degree in mechanical engineering, he then went on to earn a master’s degree in materials science from MIT, followed by an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has worked in many industries including semiconductor, automotive, industrial chemicals, medical devices and currently serves as President at a company called ILC Dover.

Beyond being ridiculously smart, he is also one of the calmest and most humble people that I know. I have been so impressed with the way he lives his life, both from a professional and a personal standpoint, and so I was deeply grateful that he agreed to spend an hour with me on the podcast sharing his wisdom. This episode is probably the least about engineering of all the episodes we’ve done to date, yet may be one of the most impactful to you as a listener both professionally and personally.

Along the way Stephanie teaches us how skyscraper engineers ensure their buildings won’t experience catastrophic resonant frequencies, how large structural engineering projects are quoted, and how to gain clarity in your engineering career.

Aaron reminds me of the calm, driven and technical savvy camp counselor that everyone aspires to be like. During my own interview on the Being an Engineer podcast I could sense Aaron had a wonderful story and advice to share with all of us. So, in this episode I put on my podcast interviewer hat and put Aaron through the gauntlet of questions. We get to dive into how Pipeline Design & Engineering came to be, how this podcast came to be & so much more. Aaron is a genuine guy with a big heart and a lot to offer. My note pad was filled with tips, tricks, ideas, and concepts by the end of the interview.

S2E34 How Process Engineering Will Make You An Invaluable Engineer | Zach O’Ferrell Aug 06, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Process engineering is not something that gets a lot of love during school, so many engineers enter the field without an understanding of what it means to be in process engineering. In practice, it’s one of the most important skills an engineer can have because it relates directly to a company’s ability to manufacture their product or device. Join us on this episode to hear from Zach O’Ferrell, a master process engineer, about design verification & validation, IQ/OQ/PQ, Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC, and other tools for optimizing the manufacturing of products.
