Today we're talking about Extinction, and NOT dinosaurs. Sorry Cal. ;)

If you've ever felt like you are the solo parent who is always the one getting behavior from your kiddos and your partner isn't... Or maybe they're the "fun" one. This could provide some great insight for you.

In the field of applied behavior analysis, extinction refers to the scenario when a behavior no longer provides the same reinforcer or preferred thing that it used to in the past.

I left the end a little unedited as we are getting back into the swing of things from vacation.

The Success Loop kind of takes you through a journey. When I first went through it and I got a little emotional.

It's hard sometimes to come to realization that what you're doing right now isn't working, but good news, there is a way for you to get the help you need to add some more tools in your tool box for this journey in parenting we are all on together.

E4: But I was Spanked Growing up and I turned out just fine! Nov 06, 2019
    Show notes

But I was spanked growing up and I turned out just fine! Why what coercive control and corporal punishment aren't good longer term ways to shape behavior. Most obvious examples are pushing, hitting, whipping, shaking, grabbing, spanking. Verbal: insulting, excessive yelling, name calling, put downs, rhetorical questions. This episode is in noway meant to make you feel bad if these are the behavioral tactics you are currently using. We want you to know, if you are listening, then that means you are ready to make a change! It will stop whatever behavior is happening as you child becomes frightened and startled Using spanking as a form of punishment makes your child FEAR you, not RESPECT you. Is this what you want? You want your child to fear you? I certainly don’t. BUT This is the EXACT reason why its enticing to use and why it is such a popular method of behavior management. However, as child become more and more exposed to that type of punishment, it becomes less and less effective due to the behavioral phenomena of habituation So when your light spank on the behind no longer stops the behavior, what's your next move? Yell louder? Spank harder? More often? Switch to something else, like a spoon or a belt? Because the only option is to increase the intensity in that moment. If you have listened, and wanting some more guidance or ready to make a change, we are here for you.
