    Beat Your Genes Podcast

Evolutionary psychology with Dr. Doug Lisle, PhD and Nathan Gershfeld, D.C.

Most psychology advice treats your brain like a broken machine. Beat Your Genes starts somewhere different: your instincts aren’t broken. They’re just optimized for a Stone Age environment that no longer exists.

Dr. Lisle – Evolutionary psychologist, former Stanford lecturer, and co-author of The Pleasure Trap – has spent decades developing frameworks that explain human behavior from the ground up.

Nathan Gershfeld, D.C. – trained first as an electrical engineer and then spent 14 years as a Doctor of Chiropractic. He brings a systems thinker’s curiosity to every conversation. He mostly lets Dr. Lisle talk.

Topics include relationships and attraction, self-esteem, personality, depression and anxiety, willpower, the ego trap, and how pushy people exploit agreeable ones.

380+ episodes. New episodes every other week.

    30: Listener questions Sep 01, 2016

Email any questions to BeatYourGenes@gmail.com or call in 657-383-0751 Some of the questions we'll go over... From listeners: 1) Why do we see a huge discrepancy between societies empathy towards human needs until it comes to sexual satisfaction. We use tax money to fund basic needs of all kinds but if you're a sexual loser you're basically on your own in every way shape and form. Aren't outcast losers in the sexual realm more likely to become radical, rebellious, dangerous to the group? Are there any "stone age" examples of us quelling these dangers and are there any modern examples? 2) Western men seem to be overwhelmed because they are seeing the women they want drenched in sexual attention and it is petrifying them, often at an early age. Age difference is key here because guys in middle to late teens are just starting to figure out their place in the world, but teen girls the moment they hit legal status can be launched all the way into status and they aren't often keen to hide it. Western society is at a place where hypergamy is broadcasted due to marketing patterns which have always taken advantage of sex while young men are unable to ignore their peers being rocketed into the sexual marketing realm left wondering what is really left for them?

28: Why Your Friendships Feel Unsatisfying, Who Men and Women Are Really Choosing, and the Real Reason Modern Life Feels Meaningless Aug 18, 2016
    Show notes

Most people assume friendships get harder in adulthood because everyone is busy. Dr. Lisle says that's not the real reason. Friendships are insurance policies, and when you already have a stable pair bond, healthy kids, money in the bank, and a high-functioning brain, the village stops offering you anything you actually need. The flatness you feel is not a failure. It's an accurate cost-benefit readout.

In this listener Q&A, Dr. Doug Lisle unpacks why female mate choice is asymmetrically more flexible than male mate choice, why bright and emotionally stable people are often treated like the group therapist by less stable friends, why the Big Five is a genuine scientific advance over typologies like Jungian theory, and why modern life produces an epidemic of social isolation and meaninglessness that would have been nearly impossible in a Stone Age village. He also breaks down how humor works as a status-loss mechanism and why male bonding runs on insincere insults while female bonding runs on insincere compliments.

Key question covered: Why do my friendships feel so one-sided and unsatisfying now that I'm a stable adult with a family?

Beat Your Genes is co-hosted by evolutionary psychologist Dr. Doug Lisle, PhD and Dr. Nathan Gershfeld, DC.

    23: Do opposites attract? Jul 14, 2016
    Show notes

Social psychology has been telling couples for decades that "similar people attract" and long-term love depends on shared values and secure attachment. Dr. Lisle says that framing misses what's actually happening. People are not drawn to similar people, and they are not drawn to opposites. They are drawn to value, and they wind up with whoever they can actually afford on the evolutionary market.

In this episode, Dr. Lisle takes on three big questions in sequence: why narcissistic and borderline personality traits exist as genetic outliers on the Big Five rather than as "types," why a 96th percentile borderline looks so different from an 80th percentile disagreeable partner, and why the "opposites attract" debate is the wrong question entirely. He also debates emotionally focused therapy with marriage and family therapist Jack Gershfeld, pushing back on the idea that distressed couples are always fighting for connection. Sometimes, Dr. Lisle argues, they are renegotiating the deal and signaling defection, and good therapy has to be honest about that.

Key question covered: Why are people attracted to certain partners and not others, and what does evolutionary psychology say about whether opposites actually attract?
