Pussycat Dull Feb 19, 2021

Show notes

This week, Kate reads from listener-submitted stories about the embarrassing (and now hilarious) ways in our youth that we tried to make people jealous and/or acutely aware of how well we're doing following a romantic rejection. From the classic "sorry wrong IM" all the way to a full John Tucker Must Die reenactment, these stories represent the good, the bad, and the delightfully cringy of Livin La Vida Four Loko in the mid-2000s. But first, Kate discusses some broader thoughts on mid-aughts media & pop culture and how it influenced her 'hot girl' days, then her sister Kelly joins her to discuss her participation in an MLM, Valentine's stories, myspace, and more; followed by the two peppering in their bad dating stories as they listen through listeners' quests to go from dull to Pussycat Doll in peak "Don't Cha" culture.

Coming Up For Erin (with Erin Heatherton) Feb 11, 2021

Show notes

TW: Mention of EDs, body image discussion

This week, Kate has a conversation with Erin Heatherton, a former Victoria's Secret Angel and Sports Illustrated model (among other things) who now lives in Chicago after having stepped back from the spotlight. She's now crushing it as an entrepreneur and somehow befriended Kate along the way, so they recorded a heart to heart about not only Erin's life and career but also about body image, problematic beauty standards, doing Ayahuasca, being in VS shows, dealing with depression, getting back to her roots, and so much more.

Look Who's Tokking Now Jan 29, 2021

Show notes

It's been one year since Kate begged her listeners to start talking the 'Tok, and on this episode, Kate follows up on her original TikTok deep dive to update everyone on what's happened in the past year. She broadly discusses the big trends, cringy dance moves, obscure subcultures, roller coaster legislation, favorite follows, etc., but also dives into specifics about some of the app's biggest stars. She discusses the trajectory of the D'Amelios, Addison Rae, The Hype House, Sway House, and even does an accidental (and kinda successful?) deep dive into Bella Poarch's mysterious background, among other things. Enjoy!

149. Hun For The Money (MLM & Insta Coaching Deep Dive) Jan 22, 2021

Show notes

This week, Kate takes on the Venn diagram of Instagram "life coaches," self-help gurus, manifesting babes, and multi-level marketing #girlbosses that peddle the (often) false hope of financial freedom and entrepreneurial dreams through uncomfortable emoji-laden texts and Facebook messages. She discusses the problem with influencers selling one-size-fits-all solutions based on their anecdotal business experience and then reads crowd sourced stories from listeners who have been on the receiving end of MLM and entrenprenHERial outreach. Enjoy!

Somewhere Hungover the Rainbow Jan 07, 2021

Show notes

This week, Kate's feeling metaphorically hungover from 2020 and is providing you some hot takes on a cold January night for a distraction in an ever-chaotic world. Recorded prior to (and cut off due to) the events today in DC, this episode includes discussions about:

Neighborhoods trying the hardest to sound rich Turtle Creek Lane's new Mercedes Kim & Kanye's divorce Freckled Fox's separation A mini deep dive of SimplySuzys' Instagram bait-and-switch Are Instagram growth coaches the new MLM? A review of Meghan & Harry's new podcast A Portrait of The Artist of a Young Woman in 2011 A snorkel about money laundering via fine art donation A Pinterest tangent that's cut short when she finds out about DC and then abruptly ends the episode.

Enjoy-- and hang in there.

Beth of Both Worlds Dec 26, 2020

Show notes

A fireside heart to heart via a double episode to keep you company through the end of 2020! In this episode, Kate recorded a holiday heart to heart, asking listeners what questions/topics they'd want to discuss if they were sitting down for dinner together. From wine selection at a dinner party, to what her experience has been like with other podcasters, what she'd say if she met TS, advice for those who are single, to hearing more about her husband and family, what she'd teach her younger self, Christmas traditions, and more, Kate opens up about a variety of new topics. Here's to Better Days in 2021!

Evermore than you bargained for (bonus) Dec 21, 2020

Show notes

In this bonus episode, Kate was trying to do a "quick recap" of all of the discussion and mystery surrounding Taylor Swift's 9th studio album's surprise release. However, it is not quick and recap might be a generous word since she felt like she hasn't listened enough to go song-by-song. Yet she still manages to talk about it for like, evermore, and shares her observations surrounding this album, e.g. the comparisons to folklore, the theories leading up to (and the theories following) the sister album's release, the potential trilogy, the Woodvale of it all, the easter eggs, the weird TikTok theories, literary references, some of her favorite lyrics/themes/callbacks, her general interest in mystical witchlike subcultures, and then talks about Champagne Problems for way too long. Enjoy?
