Race to the postseason in September, explaining the waivers, Mark Cuban talking buying an MLB team Aug 30, 2024

Show notes

With the calendar turning to September, we are entering the final stretch of the 2024 MLB regular season. And with that, the postseason picture is starting to shape up, but there are still some questions left to be asked about which teams will be playing October baseball for a chance to be crowned world champions.

Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman take a look at the current postseason picture and wonder if there will be any exciting races down the stretch within divisions and wild card standings. With teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves seemingly locked in to a postseason spot, will there be a way for the New York Mets to sneak in? Can the Arizona Diamondbacks or San Diego Padres catch the Los Angeles Dodgers in the next few weeks to win the NL West crown?

Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys talk about the waiver system, how it works and why guys like Taylor Rogers and Tommy Pham could make an impact for a possible playoff team. Jake & Jordan then get into a conversation about an exchange on X with a fan asking Mark Cuban to buy the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as talking about Rhett Lowder making his debut for the Cincinnati Reds. The guys also reveal their picks for The Good, The Bad and The Uggla this week.

Aaron Judge & Shohei Ohtani’s MVP stranglehold, Braves keep pace with Phillies, deGrom nearing return Aug 28, 2024

Show notes

The 2024 AL & NL Most Valuable Player awards, as it stands, appear to be heading back to Aaron Judge for the second time and Shohei Ohtani for the third time in four years. However, the MVP race might not be as clear cut as the numbers are making it out to be thanks to two shortstops who are making a strong push for the end-of-year award.

Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman talk about how a monster season from Bobby Witt Jr. has helped propel the Kansas City Royals into a postseason position and how Francisco Lindor is just performing at the dish, but in the field, and why those two guys might force baseball writers to think twice before giving their votes to Judge and Ohtani. They also talk about why the NL MVP Award race is a little closer than the AL and why Witt would win the NL MVP easily if he played in that league.

Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jordan gives his field report after attending the Cleveland Guardians and Royals doubleheader on Tuesday and how the Kansas City offense tends to pick up their pitchers when they’re struggling. The guys then go around the league discussing the potential return of Jacob deGrom, Nick Castellanos’s funny postgame press conferences and why on earth the Los Angeles Angels had a 90-minute players meeting.

Aaron Judge’s pursuit of 74 HRs, Shohei Ohtani looking at 50-50 and catching up on the weekend action Aug 26, 2024

Show notes

It’s tough to be surprised by what Aaron Judge has done this season. But is it possible for Judge to chase down Barry Bonds’ record of 73 home runs?

Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman discuss how Judge might actually have the potential to break the single season home run record set by Bonds in 2001 and why it might not be as improbable as people think based on what he’s doing this year. The guys then discuss Shohei Ohtani joining the 40-40 club over the weekend and why having a 50-50 season is absolutely within reach for the Los Angeles Dodgers unicorn player.

Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake & Jordan recap all the other action from baseball this weekend including Florida’s thrilling win over Taiwan in the Little League World Series championship, San Diego Padres rising star Jackson Merrill’s NL Rookie of the Year case, the Toronto Blue Jays mopping the Los Angeles Angels and give out their Player of the Weekend award.
