Show notes

VVe are rounding out our Robert Eggers coverage vvith this commissioned episode covering The VVitch. Is this puritanical family suffering from shared hallucination, or real curse? Under the evil imagery, is Eggers telling us a dark fairytale or allegory for a repressive environment? Maybe it’s both and either vvay, this movie is burned into our minds. This movie excels at vvorking its vvay into your subconscious and making you feel absolutely uncomfortable.

Better Call Saul - S06E05 - Black and Blue May 12, 2022

Show notes

Another setup episode has us tapping our foot like a prostitute-loving lawyer on cocaine wondering when we'll get to the good stuff. And it's not that the episode isn't good, it's just that anticipation of Howard's downfall is killing us. But while the Kim and Jimmy plot taketh away, the Lalo plot finally arrives to giveth, with a forehead-slappingly obvious continuation that somehow managed to be a complete surprise. Taking Back Our Corners - S01E03 - Part Three May 10, 2022

Show notes

This show makes us mad, in a good way. We’re getting a wider scope of the issues ingrained in the BPD and the bad police policy implemented decades ago that just kept getting worse over the years. Follow us on our episode breakdown by topic as we dissect the multiple characters, nuances, and layers of this show. One of our deep dives focuses on Hersl and the perverse incentives in this system.

Taking Back Our Corners - S01E02 - Part Two May 03, 2022

Show notes

It’s only episode two and We Own This City is laying out the big problems in the Baltimore Police Department. As to be expected, it’s a grim picture of corrupted departments and justice. What do you do with a law task force that has no regard for the law? In a situation that feels hopeless, maybe this show will offer a nugget of wisdom.

Taking Back Our Corners - S01E01 - Part One Apr 26, 2022

Show notes

Back with another powerhouse show, David Simon and George Pelecanos are giving us a look into the corruption of the Baltimore Police Force. If you’re an alum of The Wire, you’ll find similarities in this show’s structure. If you’re not, this podcast episode has helpful insight for understanding the multiple POVs and how this mechanic is what makes Simon shows’ storytelling unique and powerful. There’s a lot to unpack, and this is just the beginning.

For further learning on this topic, check out Serial S03E03, and of course the book We Own This City.

Better Call Saul - S06E02 - Carrot and Stick Apr 21, 2022

Show notes

It's a good thing they released these first two episodes of Better Call Saul season 6 on the same night because Nacho's story really needed it. It's not exactly the most interesting TV to watch a man run north and hide in a motel. They do what they can though. Aside from that, there's a lot to love about this one. Mike pulls some Mike stuff to scrub any evidence that might link Gus to the Lalo problem, while leaving a whopper of a question for us to ponder. And it's the return of the Kettlemans who Jimmy and Kim incorporate into their progressing scheme to take down Howard and get that sweet Sandpiper money.
