How Premature Babies Can Succeed with BLW with @doctorterrimd Terri Major-Kincade, MD Sep 02, 2021
    Show notes

#158: Calling all preemie parents. Have you been told that premature babies can’t do baby-led weaning? Well it’s not true and premature babies CAN successfully start solid foods using the baby-led weaning approach.

In this episode I’m joined by neonatologist and pediatrician Dr. Terri Major-Kincade. She provides critical care services to preterm and term infants in the NICU. Dr. Kincade runs a NICU follow up program where she sees premature babies getting ready to make the transition to solid foods.

Dr. Kincade is talking about the unique nutrient needs of premature babies, past medical experiences and trauma that may cause preemie babies to have food refusal, and what questions you should ask at your NICU follow-up appointment to ensure your premature baby is safely ready to start solid foods.

Listen to this episode to learn:

    1. How her premature sister born at 26 weeks in the 1960s inspired Dr. Terri to become a neonatologist before she even knew what that was
    2. Why she calls the weaning period “an eating experience” and what we can do to stop stressing that our premature baby isn't “getting enough” from baby-led weaning
    3. Which nutrients may be lacking in the premature infant...and what foods you can be offering (and which ones to stay away from) if you’re doing BLW with a premature baby
    4. What types of anemia your premature baby may be at risk for...and what types of food you can feed once your baby has the hang of self-feeding to help lower risk

I Didn't Do BLW with My First Baby(ies)...but Now I Want to with @theperfectmom Desiree Fortin Aug 26, 2021
    Show notes

#156: What if you didn’t do BLW with your oldest baby or babies but now you want to try it out with this baby? Baby-led weaning is one of the VERY FEW things that appeals to a second-time mom...because oftentimes you’re working with a picky eater toddlers and you’d like to avoid that with your current baby.

Desiree Fortin was in the exact same boat: she did not do BLW with her triplets...heck, she didn’t even KNOW what baby-led weaning was. But when it came time for her daughter Cambria to start solid foods, she started hearing about baby-led weaning and decided to give it a whirl.

Inside of this episode Desiree is dishing on the biggest things that freaked her out when Cambria started baby-led weaning: knowing the difference between gagging and choking and how to introduce allergenic foods because they have a family member with food allergies.

If you’re on the fence about trying BLW for your baby...or if you’re worried you’re too late to start baby-led weaning, come hear Desiree’s story and her ENTHUSIASM for BLW that just oozes through the microphone! She’s on Instagram @theperfectmom & you’ll love her down-to-earth take on figuring out BLW the second time around (plus her inspiring message about why we are ALL the perfect moms for our kids!)

Listen to this episode to learn:

    1. Why she didn’t do BLW with her triplet kiddos and how that experience of traditional spoon-feeding inspired her to take the plunge to do baby-led weaning with her current baby Cambria
    2. When she works prepping food for Cambria into her schedule with 3 super-active 5-year-old triplets...and how BLW is actually getting THEM to eat more foods too!
    3. How SEEING her baby take to self-feeding really encouraged her to keep with baby-led weaning, even with a baby who has suspected dairy allergy...and why she’s not scared to try the other allergenic foods too

Bitter Vegetables: How to Safely Feed Bitter Vegetables for Baby-Led Weaning Aug 23, 2021
    Show notes

#155: Can babies eat bitter vegetables? Or is it dangerous to offer bitter foods to your baby? Babies benefit from a variety of taste and flavor exposures, including bitter vegetables. And a baby may need to see a food 10-15 times before he or she likes or accepts it...so don’t turn your back on bitter vegetables just because your baby has rejected these foods a few times!

In this episode we’re exploring bitter vegetables: why should we feed these foods to babies? How do you make bitter vegetables safe for babies to self-feed? What about nitrates in bitter vegetables, are they bad? Come listen to learn the what, when, why and how much about bitter vegetables for baby-led weaning.

Listen to this episode to learn:

    1. WHAT bitter vegetables babies can eat? Think asparagus, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, eggplant and spinach (among others!)
    2. WHEN should babies start eating these foods...and why one of the best ways to reduce exposure to nitrates from these foods is to wait until 6 months to start solid foods - but if you wait too long, the flavor window can close!
    3. HOW to prepare bitter vegetables safely for baby-led weaning since hard and crunchy foods are choking hazards for babies as are raw leafy vegetables

Zinc: How to Get Enough Zinc with Baby-Led Weaning Foods Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

#153: Zinc is kind of like iron’s lesser known micronutrient sibling. It’s not as talked about, but it’s role in growth and development for babies is really important. And while breastmilk and/or formula will meet your baby’s zinc needs for the first 6 months or so of life...it is important to start including zinc containing foods when you start baby-led weaning.

In this episode we’re looking at zinc and what it does for babies’ growth and health...but also how you can offer foods that contain zinc to ensure your baby is getting enough zinc from foods.

Listen to this episode to learn:

    1. WHAT zinc is and how having enough zinc ensures your baby’s body can perform more than 300 different enzymatic reactions related to things like immune function, taste and smell, growth and development and cognition.
    2. WHEN baby’s zinc needs begin increasing and why it’s important to include zinc containing foods as part of the weaning diet
    3. WHICH foods contain zinc and if your family eats animal foods, how you can work in a rotation of these foods to ensure your baby is getting adequate zinc from BLW foods

Even the phrase “feeding therapy” strikes fear into the hearts of parents and caregivers…but feeding therapy is not a bad thing! In this episode I’m interviewing baby-led weaning expert and feeding therapist Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP to explore feeding therapy for infants.

Dawn and I co-teach a number of baby-led weaning programs together, but in this interview we’re exploring feeding therapy for babies. What are the signs of feeding disorders? Dawn is also discussing the different types of feeding therapy and why some of her clients only need a few sessions before getting back on track with baby-led weaning.

Listen to this episode to learn:

    1. What sort of feeding issues warrant a referral to a feeding therapist...and what exactly does a feeding therapist do in a typical session with your baby?
    2. How does feeding therapy help babies who are struggling with the transition to solid foods get back on track to meeting their nutrition and developmental milestones?
    3. Who do I call or how do I get in touch with a feeding therapist if I think my baby would benefit...and will my pediatrician even know how to give me a referral for a feeding therapist?

Pouches: Why Your Baby Doesn’t Need to Suck Pureed Food Out of Pouches with @msdawnslp Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP Aug 02, 2021
    Show notes

#149: What are the drawbacks of using baby food pouches? In this episode I’m joined by pediatric swallowing expert and speech language pathologist Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP to talk about why your baby does not need to suck puree food out of a pouch. Ms Dawn and I are breaking down the limitations of pouches from cost, developmental and nutrition standpoints. While pouches are certainly convenient, their persistent use can actually inhibit your baby’s ability to achieve certain growth, nutrition and developmental milestones.

Listen to this episode to learn:

    1. Why we want babies to transition past purees when they’re learning how to eat...and what a baby stuck on purees
    2. Why pouches promote suckling (an immature swallowing pattern) at the very time we want them to develop a mature pattern (chewing and swallowing)
    3. Why pouches aren’t as healthy as they purport to be and why their persistent use can actually inhibit your baby’s ability to achieve their growth, developmental and nutrition milestones.
