    Astronomica

Welcome to Astronomica, a science fiction OSR actual play podcast using the Stars Without Number RPG system. Join Star Master Stan and regular players Colin, Cullen, Geoff, and Kristen as they crew the definitely-not-piloted-by-a-rogue-AI ship The Admiral Grace. From encounters with magnificent space whales to battling intergalactic corporate scumbags, there is nothing this crew can’t make way more complicated than it needs to be. Tag along every Wednesday and listen in as we learn that the true friends were the ones you decompressed and maybe accidentally spaced along the way.

Okay, we've been putting it off long enough. After 70+ episodes - basically half our entire run time - it's time to say goodbye to the only NPC that ever mattered to Mackie. Oh, and also CB stole a shuttle and is doing something sneaky.

Ep 141: In Hot Pursuit of the Hot Sprite Aug 23, 2023

With Cuatlecue in their rear view, Team Meatbag prepares for a multi-jump journey to Panamorphe. And what even is "Hot Sprite"? These questions answered and more on this episode of Astronomica!
PS: This week begins our annual AC recordings. We've got a new noise filter that is *almost* perfect but does make us sound ever so slightly like a group of robots. Which we totally aren't because we're all definitely humans. Yes, even Geoff.

Meanwhile, Augie leads Mackie, Hopper, and their "army" of robots on a deeper investigation of the sink hole-ridden Control Center.

So if you get stranded on an alien planet with no food, no shelter, and the potential to stumble into a camp of cannibals at any moment, what are you gonna do? Keep exploring, obviously! This week Team Meatbag bravely ignores their grave situation in favor of fat pre-tech loots and/or a place to hole up for long enough to avoid the space pirates above.

Ep 118: The One Where Anton Lives Mar 15, 2023

Man, this week is a big one. Three years ago we started recording this shout into the void, just five Memphis nerds and the insane urge to make other people listen to our silly voices. Since then we've weathered a pandemic, lost and gained jobs, and talked a whole lot of shit about libertarians. Best of all, we've done all this with the same core crew plus a friend or two along the way. There's no being coy on this one, this week we say goodbye to one of those core members and damn, we're happy for him. But damn are we also gonna miss him. Please raise your glass and be upstanding for Anton/Cullen: Happy trails, nothin' smokes like a relic, and we hope you're always like this.

They say no one wants to work these days* but the crew of the Grace is scrounging for every job they can get their collectively questionable little hands on. Not content with the next step along Scrip's quest line, the team heads back to the Skullpants' I Fucking Love this Place Bar and Grill to feel out a few more potential gigs. Anton and CB negotiate with the dubious help of too many bloomin' onions while Mackie and Hopper ask to see the manager. It's actually a lot funnier than it sounds, we promise.

Ep 54: When the Grace is a Rockin' Nov 03, 2021

It's our first anniversary y'all! As of this week, we've been doing this thing for one whole year and we are mighty excited to share that with you, our loyal listeners. In lieu of our usual vague rundown of this week's episode we'd like to give a great big massive hardy THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us over the course of this year. We've gone from a bunch of nerdy misanthropes to a bunch of nerdy misanthropes with a worldwide platform for all of our nonsensical fart jokes and thinly veiled political rants. We seriously could not do this without you. I hope you're proud of yourselves, you filthy animals.
Anywho, we've got an extra robust bit of opening shenanigans for you this week. We had a lot of fun trading stories but if you'd like to jump straight to the action you can skip ahead to the 30 minute mark. We hope you enjoy and thanks again for making this past year such an amazing journey!

Ep 50: Splitting Up is Hard To Do Sep 29, 2021

What's the one cardinal rule of role playing games? That's right, this week we're ignoring everything we know about RPG survival and splitting the party. While Anton lives out his action hero dreams on a solo-ish mission back to the Mongos, the rest of the crew hangs out at the Silver City. If you enjoy our rambling intros, then you'll LOVE this episode length behind the scenes chat. We answer questions from listeners, wax philosophical about the rigors of life in the end times, and even tease a few bits and pieces for our next adventure. We are extra excited to introduce our very first guest, Katrina Coleman! Katrina is a Memphis comedian with her own podcast (You Look Like - check it out) and a dear friend of the cast. She'll be trying to keep us in line for this extra special episode before diving in as a brand new character in our next arc. Get ready to laugh, cry, and wonder how we manage to publish a weekly show with Chatstronomica 2 (electric boogaloo).

Ep 38: This is What it Sounds Like Jul 07, 2021

While Mackie and the Grace shake off the cobwebs from their recent trip down memory lane, the rest of the crew scrambles to reach their battle stations. Anton puts the "ace" in, uh, "space pilot" (look, we never promised to be clever, ok?). Mackie and Theophania try to patch up all these new holes and Hilde works on jamming the three pretech fighters on the ship's tail. It's an honest to goodness ship combat, gentle beings, so strap in, strap up, and strap on for this exciting first part to our Glasir System finale!

Ep 37: The Mackie in the Machine Jun 30, 2021

It's time for the main event! With all other options exhausted, the crew of the Admiral Grace starts chucking grenades at the enveloping Dove of Peace. We have just enough time to figure out that chicken f**king joke from last week's episode title before a massive explosion rocks the ship. Insert joke here about Anton's impending doom and keep your fingers crossed for the rest of the team as we come face to face with the consequences for a whole heap of questionable decisions.

    Ep 36: Let's F**K this Chicken Jun 23, 2021

With the team as prepped as they're ever going to be, the crew of the Admiral Grace charges headlong into danger with only the barest haze of a solid drunk between them and the knowledge of certain death. It's time to suit up and, in the words of a beautiful and sacred ancient Aegean proverb, f**k this chicken! (Yeah, we have questions, too)

Ep 35: A Fistful of Hand Grenades Jun 16, 2021

It looks like the crew is ready to ignore all logic and self preservation as they plan their attack on the ominously intelligent pre-tech Dove of Peace. Hilde's clone sib reluctantly agrees to help with the preparations and the team works to duct tape a few special munitions together in the hopes that at least one of them might survive. Sure, Stardaddy warned us this was a great idea (DMs, amiright?) but we remain resolute in trying to achieve the ever illusive total party kill. Who are we kidding, at this point Anton is a shoe in for the lone survivor gig, right?

It's a long one, y'all, and we're not just talking about Anton's...stories about Aegea (what did you think we meant?). This week the extremely refined crew of the Admiral Grace sits down to dinner with a whole monastery's worth of nuns. Mackie chats a bit with Dr. Theophania about the Dove of Peace while Hilde engages in theological discourse with Mother Marwazi herself. Later Anton and Hopper enjoy the after dinner entertainment while Mackie and Hilde introduce the good doctor to Terry Fizz and the Grace comes up with a plan to approach the Dove.

With their slight detour of hunting down and murdering GhostDotGov well and truly behind them, the crew finally makes their way to offload the artifact that brought them all together in the first place. Let it never be said that the Admiral Grace Limited Liability Corporation doesn't deliver...eventually! While Mackie gears up to wing man for Hilde with the Reliquary Institute's representative, Humberto Hollis, Anton demonstrates that he is still very much like this and gets his wink on with an attractive nun. Ep 21: Drones and Droids and Bots, Oh My! Mar 10, 2021

The crew prepares to meet their mysterious contact for a completely above board and not at all shady hand off of the smuggled AI core. Hilde finally digs into her new drone and discovers it is even cooler than she thought it would be. Before long, DefConDoc shows up and turns out to be a punk kid with a wicked fashion sense. Unfortunately there is no time to get to know this dapper fellow as a bevy of mall cop robots start pouring out of the walls and blasting away at DefConDoc and his henchman. Will the crew stand with their new contacts or scurry away secure in the knowledge that they've already been paid? If you've listened this far, the answer might surprise you!

Ep 20: Bada Bing Bada Bang Bidding War Mar 03, 2021

After several weeks (okay, a few days) of playing host to the Apogee Station refugees, the crew of the Admiral Grace is more than ready for a little R &R. Anton and Hopper head to the nearest tattoo shop for an update to the ol' chassis while Hilde and Mackie look for a quiet tea room. Before long, Mackie is hosting a bidding war for the AI core smuggled more or less safely in the Grace's secret hold. It looks like the crew can expect a hefty pay day just as soon as Hilde and Mackie collect the rest of the team. Here's hoping this isn't some sort of elaborate trap!

Ep 19: When Corporate Hellscapes Freeze Over Feb 24, 2021

While Anton takes one last shot at obtaining a fancy new fighter ship, Mackie gives his favorite kid a tour of the Admiral Grace. Turns out our Mr. Mackie has a Tragic Backstory (tm) after all and at least some of that surprise brain surgery from Hopper might actually be a good thing. Anton rejoins the crew just in time to get the galley fires under control and the team finally heads to Glasir IV. This new corporate hellscape looks to be a whole lot sturdier than the last, which is good because this one comes complete with an orbital laser prepped to explode anyone who commits violence on the planet's surface. Will our intrepid crew hold it together long enough to get paid or will the temptation of testing out the Dove of Peace overcome their instinct for self preservation?

Ep 18: Home is Where the Humiliation Is Feb 17, 2021

While Anton practices a bit of full contact diplomacy, Hilde presents Mackie with an intimidating possibility: his old home the Empress Helene is nearby and looks to be the most promising option for the majority of the Apogee Station refugees. Unfortunately this means an extremely uncomfortable conversation with his least intimidating progeny. With this new plan more or less set, Anton tries to figure out why the Admiral Grace is diverting course without him. He's not that worried though as the crew assures him that in his absence the galley would become one never ending series of explosions. Before long the Admiral Grace docks at the Empress Helene and Mackie prepares to look as successful as only an old man full of re-purposed organs can.

Ep 17: Anton Gets His Groove Back Feb 10, 2021

It turns out that guy trying to board the ship is actually pretty chill. After a bit of haggling with this Loc Xi De representative, the crew agrees to send Anton over to the Albatross in the hopes of securing passage for the remaining refugees. Hilde and Mackie work on finding a landing site on Glazier IV, not an easy task with competing corporate ships breathing down their necks. Meanwhile, Anton employs his legendary charm with the captain of the Albatross. Fingers crossed this goes a bit better than that whole Bridget Sakamoto fiasco.

Ep 16: In Space No One Can Hear You Steal Corporate Secrets Feb 03, 2021

Hoping to offload a few of those hungry Apogee Station refugees, the crew of the Admiral Grace answers a call from an incoming corporate vessel. It seems their moral pangs have more or less sorted themselves out as everyone decides pretty quickly that negotiating with shady business dudes is just about the best way to move things along. To that end, Anton and Mackie pull a mini-heist on a potential spy for the Loc Xi De corporation. They liberate a high tech data pad which Hilde immediately plans to use for her own devices. Meanwhile, attempts to negotiate for refugee removal hit a wall as coms go dead. Is the ship being jammed? Did the mysterious powers from the Apogee attack catch up with our heroes? And who is that dude jumping out of the other ship and trying to board the Grace?

Ep 15: No Good Deeds for Old Men Jan 27, 2021

Leaving the once bustling Apogee Station somewhat the worse for their visit, the crew of the Admiral Grace struggles to process their various pangs of conscience. Hilde experiences considerably more emotions than she is used to while Anton remembers how he came to be on the Grace. Mackie exhibits an unusual level of leadership, at least while the refugees are paying attention. Before too long, though, the crew is forced to deal with the reality of babysitting a bunch of hyper-capitalist cronies and the circling corporations move to intercept their intrepid vessel.

Ep 14: Mall Walk to the Danger Zone Jan 20, 2021

Anton lives! The crew continues to battle those pesky drones while realizing that some of their actions might just have consequences. Mackie continues to romance his lady love but complications arise when she remembers she has a dog and is desperate to save it from all those explosions. Speaking of consequences, Anton battles through his combat haze to insist on saving as many civilians as possible. Hopefully the Grace has enough food - and oxygen - to get everyone safely to Glazier IV.

Ep 13: Love in the Time of Mall-era Jan 13, 2021

Surprise! The murder droids are still on the trail and totally fine with collateral destruction. The Admiral takes aim while Mackie, Hilde, and Anton mill about in predictable confusion for a round or two. Eventually, the crew comes up with a plan: rendezvous in the food court, flag down the Gracie, and get the hell outa Apogee Station. This foolproof retreat is shockingly complicated when Mackie locks eyes with the most gorgeous mall walker he's ever seen. Meanwhile, Anton is similarly enamored of a big damn gun and Hilde tries out her newfound authority on station security.

Ep 12: Whitelist Our Galaxy for Premium Content Jan 06, 2021

After narrowly escaping a swarm of murder drones, the Admiral Grace once again succumbs to the sweet, sweet oblivion of hyperdrive. Meanwhile, her very good boy Mackie shows a surprising level of deceit when he recruits the rest of team meatbag to hide a rogue AI in hopes of selling it for a truly righteous payday. Nothing particularly interesting happens until the team hits the Glazier system - that hive of corporate slime and franchisery - and remembers why intergalactic ad blockers are a necessity. Oh well, at least Apogee Station has a decent mall with all things a rag tag crew could ever need. Good thing those murder droids totally didn't follow Gracie after all, right guys?

    Ep 11: Chatstronomica Dec 30, 2020

This week we're taking a little break from our narrative to bring you A Very Special Episode. No, it's not about peer pressure but we do talk about why everyone should be playing Stars Without Number (come on, all the cool kids are doing it) plus dish on answers to all the behind the scenes questions we assume you want to know! Why is Hilde such a fantastic and assertive team member? How come Mackie has the strength and dexterity of a 19 year old football player and, well, the intelligence of a 19 year old football player who keeps forgetting to wear a helmet? And why is Cullen always hoping Anton will just die already? Find out answers to some of these questions and more in our first ever discussion-based episode of Astronomica.
PS: A brand new episode of Astronomica narrative next week, and (in Anton's voice) that's our guar-on-tee

Ep 10: Battle Stations or Bust Dec 23, 2020

Battle stations! Last week we left our motley crew with an unknown vessel in hot pursuit and the Admiral Grace ordering her human counterparts to take their stations. Of course, that would be a lot easier if everyone in the crew knew what that meant. Good thing it doesn't take too long to get everyone in place and ready for combat. Well, ready to wait for the pursuing vessel to get within range of combat any way. At least we have a lot of extra time to figure out how space battles work, right?

Gracie officially welcomes Hilde to the team while Mackie decorates the cockpit with some snazzy loot. Meanwhile, everyone levels up but completely forget to talk about what that means. Ep 8: Dancing on the C-Wing Dec 09, 2020

We join our crew just as they realize they aren't quite clear of Bridget's revenge. Sure, detaching the submersible modules seemed like a great way to escape but unfortunately physics still work even on an implausible planet made entirely of water and the two units surface at exactly the same time. Finally on-task, the crew heads to the swanky part of the ship for some good old fashioned looting. Oh, and they'll probably keep an eye open for Sergei guy just in case he has a clue about what is actually going on here. Mackie strikes a pose in his brand new rich dude robe before finding an extremely valuable - and potentially dangerous - black box. Meanwhile Hilde finally finds a way to tap into the ship's main systems and Anton strikes out in the loot department. A secret panel reveals the enigmatic Mr. Sergei just as Bridget and company realize something odd is going on. Hopefully those newly discovered ship's systems will help the crew get out of a jam or Anton will definitely have some explaining to do.

Finally, Starmaster Stan and the cast get a little silly with a special message for the holiday.

Meanwhile, Mackie is on the hunt for the buffet table as Hopper tries frantically to keep him from accidental harm.
