    Show notes

For this Association Chat, we talk about establishing and maintaining your health journey over the busy holiday season, carving out time for your own self-care in between holiday parties, considerations for the office (when cookies and candies abound!) and health-conscious options for your learner participating in association programs throughout the holiday season. Guests:

Aaron Wolowiec is an award-winning learning strategist and meetings coach for leading trade associations and individual membership societies across the United States. Committed to the latest research and trends in learning, intentional networking environments, and meaningful transfer exercises, he launched Event Garde, a professional development consultancy, in 2011.

Earlier this year, Aaron launched Healthy by Association, a place for association and hospitality professionals to set goals, share their workout accomplishments, exchange healthy recipes and, above all, stay motivated. More information about the inception and establishment of this group is available here.

After spending nearly 20 years in the hospitality and meetings industry, Angela Pelc has transitioned into the health and fitness world.

After having success (at last!) on the Weight Watchers program, Angela now services and supports others on their journey as a teammate for WW in the metro Detroit area and is currently working toward coaching and leading her own meetings. She has lost 70 pounds on the program.

Angela has been on board with HBA since it's inception and works with the moderator team to make this a useful and inspirational community to support busy professionals who have health and fitness goals.

Angela believes in daily activity and has completed several Beachbody workout programs, and also loves both running and yoga.

Lola Capps is a mom, a chiropractor, a cross-fitter, a wellness hacker enthusiast and she is on a mission. She has dedicated her life to wellness and looks for ways to meet people where they are and bring them closer to a healthier lifestyle they can sustain.

Tech Takeover - Are You Ready? Nov 20, 2017
    Show notes

Why aren't associations more innovative when it comes to tech maturity? What's holding us back?

For this show, I jumped off the stage at AMS Fest in Washington, DC, and ran to my computer to talk with experts about tech innovation (or the lack thereof) in the association industry. [Sorry for any of the "crowd noise" behind me in the audio]

This topic, studied by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Foundation, sheds light on information technology (IT) maturity levels at associations.

In its survey, only 9% of associations were found to be truly innovative.

So I wanted to know: What are the major causes holding associations back? How do more innovative associations overcome this challenge? Could the key lie in a stronger relationship between the CIO and CEO be the solution, or is there a deeper issue at hand?

Some questions we discussed on this show:

    • What did the ASAE study find about tech maturity at associations?

    • Why do you think more associations aren't on the upper echelon of tech maturity?

    • How valuable is the CEO/CIO (or equivalent) role in reaching the innovative end of tech maturity?

    • When the CIO becomes the CEO or Executive Director -- how do you implement this change? What's your relationship with your CIO now?

    Panelists:

    • Tim Hopkins, Director, Digital Center, International Association of Fire Chiefs

    • Bill Bruce, MBA, CAE, Executive Director, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine

    • Ray van Hilst, Director of Client Results, Yoko Co

What Will We Do for Work? Associations and Entrepreneurs Taking on The Skills Gap

From https://talentedlearning.com/how-associations-bridge-skills-gap-digital-badges/: "According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in December 2016 there were 5.6 million open jobs in this country and only 98,000 were added in March 2017. That includes many notoriously hard-to-fill jobs. These persistently unfilled positions are attributed to an unfortunate and somewhat ironic phenomenon called the "skills gap."

Skills gap theorists say that formal education isn't preparing enough candidates for specialized high-skill, high-growth jobs such as data analysis, user experience design and software programming. Traditional education isn't producing enough qualified people to support today's rapidly changing business needs. And this talent supply problem is only compounded by a decreasing 4.5% unemployment rate."

    Featured guests:

Patrick Haller has led a career in non-for-profit marketing for nearly two decades having experience in both membership and donor organizations. He has achieved growth for multiple organizations leveraging analytics and marketing strategy to make sound decisions in managing increased membership numbers and revenues. Additionally, Patrick inspires a customer-service oriented culture in his organization leading to more satisfied members and increased engagement and retention rates. Patrick holds an MBA and MS in Strategic Management from Indiana University and a BS in Marketing from the University of Maryland.
