Social Justice and School Counseling Jul 02, 2020
    Show notes

The recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and Rayshard Brooks demand the need for everyone to do more work in promoting social justice, especially for blacks in America. Although these murders took place outside of the school building, events like these weigh heavily on students’ minds and can play a role in their ability to succeed in school. As with any crisis or traumatic event, school counselors respond to students’ needs, providing direct counseling services to help them develop the mindsets and behaviors they need to succeed, despite experiencing these traumas. Learn how a fully implemented ASCA National Model program helps you actively promote social justice in your school. Download accompanying handout here.

    Learning objectives:

After viewing this session, you should be able to:

    1. Explain how school counselors promote social justice through the implementation of an ASCA National Model-based school counseling program.
    2. Discuss how social justice is embedded throughout the four components of the ASCA National Model, and provide specific examples.
    3. Explain the role data plays in advocating for social justice within your school counseling program.

    Speaker:

Deirdra Williams, Dean of Counseling and Student Services, Heritage High School, Wake Forest, N.C.
