    Episode 10: Cloak & Dagger Season 1 Hot Take Aug 09, 2018
    Show notes

Izzy leads the show’s deep dive into teen MCU, accompanied by Chris and future Marvel Film & Media Studies teacher Sabrina Clarke (@sabsclarke). The crew discusses everything they love about Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger, even with its hokey music choices and its total lack of subtlety in depicting real-life issues. Somehow, someway, the episode gets back on the topic of how weirded out we are by Jeph Loeb.

    Episode 9: Confronting James Gunn’s Legacy Aug 02, 2018
    Show notes

In discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first proper scandal, the core AP Marvel crew of Chris, Izzy and Anthony take a deep dive in the career of Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn. We discuss Gunn’s past filmography, what constitutes as acceptable content and satire in film, the content in the Guardians films themselves, and how the alt-right got us in this predicament long before this controversy even happened.

Content Warning: NSFW language, discussion of movies containing references to incest, sex and rape, discussion of tweets referencing pedophilia, rape and other sexual acts, Tropic Thunder‘s use of a mental disability slur, sexism in Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, GamerGate and harassment, various cases of sexual harassment post-Weinstein

Episode 8: What to Do with the Fox Characters Jul 26, 2018
    Show notes

With the Disney-Fox deal looking to be inevitable, Izzy, Chris and Anthony invite their friend and colleague Thomas Rasmussen to speculate on what Feige and co. will do with these new properties. The crew debates on what to do with our fourth wall-breaking friend Deadpool, how to make mutants make sense in the larger MCU, how Fantastic Four would be easier to incorporate (as a family movie?), and… the rights to the Gummi Bears?

Episode 7: Weapons and Violence in Iron Man and The Punisher Jul 19, 2018
    Show notes

While the MCU isn’t necessarily known for being violent, weapons have a large role in the universe and its characters. Chris brings their former fellow Paste Magazine intern and ScreenRant writer Eric McAdams (@EdaciouslyYours), along with the usual team of Anthony and Izzy to discuss Iron Man and The Punisher in particular. Does the Tony Stark trilogy of films have anything worthwhile to say about the military industrial complex? Is Frank Castle an appropriate character in today’s age with the gun reform debate at a height?

Episode 6: Ant-Man and the Wasp Hot Take Jul 12, 2018
    Show notes

Join the core AP Marvel trio, as Ant-hony makes his triumph-ant return to the show to lead Chris and Izzy in a discussion about Ant-Man and the Wasp. It was a funny, creative and very necessary movie that just lacked things like, you know, character arcs. But hey, at least everyone was happy and wholesome and not toxic and angry in this movie!

Episode 5: A Calm Conversation About Iron Fist and Race Jul 05, 2018
    Show notes

With Anthony out sick, Chris and Izzy bring in MND’s own Adam Barnhardt (@adambarnhardt) to talk about a subject that surely no one will get upset about! This trio of two Asians and a white guy dive straight into the casting controversy over Finn Jones as Iron Fist, and discuss the origins of the comic’s obsession with Asian culture and mysticism. We contemplate: would the show have been any different if an Asian-American performer were cast instead? Surely we can all come to an agreement here.

    Episode 4: Infinity War Post-Mortem Jun 28, 2018
    Show notes

Izzy and Anthony may be audibly sick during this episode, but they muster the strength to discuss Avengers: Infinity War with Chris and their special guest, game writer Sam Riordan (@justsamplease). Before jumping into the movie itself, the AP Marvel crew talk about their respective experiences and hype levels going into this ambitious crossover. Then, we break down the different tiers of the MCU fandom. Finally, we dissect the character of Thanos, and some qualms about the film’s cynicism and depiction of what some consider to be toxic masculine behavior.

Episode 3: Marvel Studios and TV—The Connection Stops Here Jun 21, 2018
    Show notes

The AP Marvel trio is joined by their first guest, ScreenRant writer and MCUExchange alum Cooper Hood (@moviecooper) in discussing the connections — or lack thereof — between the MCU movies and television shows. Without taking the difficult logistics into consideration, how would any sort of crossover work between the movies and shows like Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Defenders? We discuss some creative hurdles that such crossovers could involve. We also make jokes about Jeph Loeb looking like a dad.

(Note: As you might be able to tell by listening, this episode was recorded before S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s renewal and summer 2019 return announcement was made official)

Episode 2: Does Hawkeye Need “Fixing?” Jun 14, 2018
    Show notes

AP Marvel wasted no time in making a second test episode, Chris, Izzy and Anthony immediately jumping into a discussion about Hawkeye. With the MCU’s general underuse of Jeremy Renner, reduced role in The Avengers, the lack of any big character moments until Age of Ultron, and his total absence in Avengers: Infinity War, what is next for Clint Barton?

Episode 1: Surveillance, Civil Liberties and The Winter Soldier Jun 07, 2018
    Show notes

In AP Marvel’s inaugural episode, Chris, Izzy and Anthony discuss Captain America: The Winter Soldierand its use of issues of contemporary American politics for its story. Did the movie have something profound to say about surveillance and our intelligence agencies, or is it just masquerading as a “political thriller?”
