    Another Mother Runner

A family of two podcasts to get (+ keep) you running without losing your family, friends, job, or sanity! More than 1,000 (!) back episodes to enjoy.

Every Friday on the original show (launched in 2011), host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of 14 marathons, is joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to finding your athletic happy place, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: This ~hour-long show covers it all (and then some!).

Every Tuesday, Miles of Books drops, alternating Ellison Weist chatting fiction one week with Sarah Bowen Shea and non-fiction with Coach Liz Waterstraat and Sarah the next. In about 30 minutes, the hosts entice and entertain you with plot descriptions and pearls of training (and life!) advice to guide you to your next great reads.

Both shows are witty and conversational, making them great running partners because the AMR gals do all the talking—even on the uphills!

#362: Weighty Matters, Pt. II: Fighting Chub + Expanding Palate of Picky Eaters May 03, 2019
    Show notes

In the second of a 2-part weight-loss series: Sarah and Dimity talk with two real-world mother runners about their “weighty issues,” as well as two experts who offer advice.

First is a young mom of three who shares her struggle of creeping weight gain, leaving her focusing on the “chub” she sees in photos. Body-positive researcher Charlotte Markey, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, offers insight into recalibrating body perception and body-posi advice for greater contentment.

The next two guests—a mom of a daughter with finicky eating habits and Jill Castle, M.S., R.D., the author of myriad books about childhood nutrition—delve deep into food issues. Jill suggests ways to get everyone in a family to eat more vegetables while also letting teens make decisions about food choices. Learn how to work with your child to formulate a plan for food.

In the intro, Dimity and Sarah discuss recent big events in their lives of their teens—a Minnesota volleyball tournament for Dimity’s daughter and dance showcases for Sarah’s 8th-grade son. The first guest joins the conversation at 11:07.

Sarah and Dimity advise Elizabeth in Seattle on the best ways to increase her distance without wearing herself out. They counsel coming-back-from-injury Amy in Lakeville, Minn., on how to build back up to doing half-marathons, including giving a weekly mileage suggestion. The duo offers suggestions to another Amy, this one from Gaithersburg, Maryland, about juggling training for triathlons and marathons. Then they give Samantha in McMinnville, Oregon, suggestions for finding a BRF (best running friend). They wrap with an update from Marcella, who they’d counseled on breaking two-hour time goal in her half-marathon (spoiler alert: Marcella crushed it!). #361: Weighty Matters, Pt. I: Belly Fat + Maintaining Significant Weight Loss Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

In the first of a 2-part weight-loss series: Sarah and Dimity chat with two real-world mother runners about their weight-management concerns, plus the duo are joined by registered dietitian Ellie Kempton, who weighs in with insight and advice.

The first guest is Jennifer Summers, a nurse and a mom of one, who is infuriated by her belly fat. Jennifers laments how she made herself miserable logging calories. She details her numerous attempts to drop some pounds, saying, “everything worked for a little bit, but nothing was something I could maintain for the rest of my life.” She also talks about the loss of mental focus and “estrogen-oomph” she felt while riding the menopause rollercoaster. Ellie talks at length about the importance of looking “one layer deeper at the hormonal symphony,” which Dimity quickly re-dubs a “cacophony.” (Well played, Dim!) After explaining why stress can have such a negative impact on weight, Ellie shares numerous tips for managing stress in everyday life.

The final guest is Emily Cooley, a Colorado mom of two whose doctor told her about three years ago that she was morbidly obese. In a one-on-one conversation with Dimity (due to technical difficulties), Emily details how she lost 100 pounds in a university weight-loss study—and how she’s kept the weight off in the ensuing 3+ years. The Coloradans talk about Emily’s upcoming training for her first marathon.

In the intro, the SBS and Dim talk about the latest goings-on of their artistically inclined teen sons. The weight-loss conversation begins at 14:15.

    #360: Three First-Time Boston Marathon Runners Apr 19, 2019
    Show notes

Sarah and Dimity have a nearly marathon-length conversation with three first-time runners of the Boston Marathon—including Dimity’s husband, Grant Davis! First is Kristen Genet who, despite running fast enough to qualify for Boston, wore a charity bib in the legendary event. Laugh as Kristen tells about a treat she gave herself at the top of Heartbreak Hill, the notoriously hilly section around Mile 16. Find out why she stopped when she first spied the finish line. Next is Kristi Brown, a mom of four, who talks about the “electric” energy of Boston on marathon weekend—and how she would randomly burst into (happy!) tears as she toured the city. She shares two amazing TMI pre-race anecdotes, including one that had her asking herself, “What Would Sarah Do?” Marvel at her per-mile speed—and her ability to embrace a new pace when she slowed down starting at Mile 17.

The final guest, Dim’s hubby, Grant, is well worth waiting for. He kicks things off with his running origin story that even Dimity didn’t know! Grant details his five-year BQ journey, plus the highs and lows of the training cycle that got him to this year’s starting line. He describes the party atmosphere in the starting corrals, his “first indication that this race was going to be unlike any other marathon” he’d ever run. Grant’s candor throughout the interview is touching—a really special AMR experience. The intro chitchat is pretty tight, with the first 2019 Boston finisher joining the episode at 9:30. Sarah and Dimity help Erica from Illinois ease into a half-marathon conservatively—then the duo debates what’s the best mile-marker to step on the gas. They talk acclimatization (easier to spell than to say, as you’ll hear!) in response to a question from Marianne in New Jersey. The BAMRs provide Julie with blister-prevention advice, then go through a range of speed-building tactics for Jamie in St. Louis, who is transitioning from marathon training to tackling shorter summer races. #359: Runners Inspired by Boston Marathon Apr 12, 2019
    Show notes

Sarah Bowen Shea and Amanda Loudin team up to talk to a trio of runners motivated by the Boston Marathon. The guests weren’t inspired to necessarily run Boston, but inspired by it—the size and scope of the marathon or by the tragic 2013 bombings. The first guest is Julia Gibson, a mother runner of three, who vowed she’d never run 26.2—until she “watched that Boston Marathon documentary with tears in my eyes, and I wanted to be a part of something that historical.” Julia offers advice for other BAMRs looking to BQ. Next is repeat-guest Erin Wright, who was so moved by the Boston Marathon bombings, she registered to run her first marathon the very next day! Erin shares how the event colored the 26.2 miles she ran in October 2013 at Twin Cities Marathon. Then YiOu Wang rounds out the conversation, telling how she morphed from a couch potato to a 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials participant (!!) after spectating Boston as a student at MIT. While watching thousands of runners and spectators, she told herself, “This is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen, and I want to be a part of it!” YiOu describes how she “Couch-to-5K’d” her way to becoming a runner—and she’s now a professional ultramarathon. YiOu gives loads of advice, including tips for stepping up from 26.2 to 50K races, how to stick to a training plan while traveling, and how to nab a stunningly beautiful run-photo for Instagram! In the intro, Sarah and Amanda talk about their kids on the college-admission path, and Sarah shares about encounters with tap-legend Savion Glover. Talk of Boston starts at 13:27.Get 15% discount code in both Mother Runner Store and Train Like a Mother Club by taking our podcast survey. Thanks! #358: Sleep and Running Apr 05, 2019
    Show notes

Wake up: It’s time to talk about sleep! Sarah Bowen Shea and her BRF, Molly Williams, chat about all facets of sleep, answering questions from the AMR Facebook page, with two guests: Ellen Wermter, a family nurse practitioner at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, then professional distance runner Stephanie Bruce. First up is Nurse Ellen, who reveals the optimal average of hours we should be sleeping (the number might surprise you)—and she offers welcome reassurance that it’s normal to have one or two interruptions during the night. (Is that a baby crying we hear—or our partner snoring?!) She shares ways to get deeper sleep plus tips for staying asleep. The sleep-nurse also reveals ways to break the habit of recurring middle-of-night fret sessions. Find out what a “worry window” is—and why taking a daily one can improve your slumber sessions.

Next on the sleep train is pro runner Stephanie Bruce, who tells why she was able to set personal records in both the 10K and marathon in 2018. This mom of two preschool-age sons reveals bedtime rituals—both hers and that of her young family. (#apples) Stephanie shares how she stopped suffering from night sweats. In talking about sleep hygiene, Stephanie tells how she adjusts for races in distant time zones.

In the introductory chitchat, the running partners tell tales about that morning’s tempo run and their debut float-chamber sessions. Nurse Ellen comes on to talk about sleep at 20:08.
