Defense Dominates Miami's First Scrimmage Aug 07, 2023

Show notes

The Miami Dolphins made Vic Fangio the league's highest-paid defensive coordinator this offseason. Fangio, former head coach of the Denver Broncos, seems to have hit the ground running with the Dolphins as his defense locked up coach Mike McDaniel's offense on Saturday during the year's first scrimmage. It was a big day in the trenches for Christian Wilkins. Zach Sieler and Raekwon Davis. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie Aubrey Miller was in charge of calling plays — what else did Saturday's practice teach us?

Injury Updates: When Should We Worry About Players Missing Practice? Aug 07, 2023

Show notes

The injury report is on everyone's mind as the Miami Dolphins are less than a week away from the year's first preseason game. The Dolphins took part in a scrimmage at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday but a handful of players were held out due to injuries. Odds are Miami is being overly cautious in hopes of avoiding long-term injuries, but when should we start worrying about some of the team's top players? Offensively, Terron Armest and De'Von Achane were two of the players who were held out. The Dolphins were also without three safeties as Trill Williams, Brandon Jones, and DeShone Elliot were held out.

Projecting Miami's 53-Man Roster Following A Week of Training Camp Aug 03, 2023

Show notes

The Miami Dolphins have until August 29 to cut the roster down to 53 players. The Dolphins are a week away from the first preseason game, a good benchmark for players looking to rise up the depth chart. That said, a week of training camp is in the books — what have we learned about the roster general manager Chris Grier constructed over the offseason? The Dolphins kept three quarterbacks on the active roster last season, but a rule change means Miami can hold on to a player at other positions. Will five tight ends stick on the roster for the second-straight year? Could more receivers be kept after just five were on the roster to begin the 2022 regular season?

2020 Hindsight: Moves Miami Made That We Hated at the Time... And Others We Still Do Aug 03, 2023

Show notes

The decision to select Cam Smith in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft was a wise one by the Miami Dolphins. Despite adding Jalen Ramsey, the Dolphins learned that you can never have too many cornerbacks after dealing with injuries throughout the 2022 season. Early in training camp, Ramsey, unfortunately, suffered an injury that will keep him off the field for an extended period of time -- providing Smith the opportunity to contribute much earlier than some originally thought. Hindsight is always 2020 and here spend time looking at how our opinion on draft picks and free agent signings have changed over time.

Projecting Miami's 53-Man Roster: Tough Decisions Loom in the Trenches and at Cornerback Aug 03, 2023

Show notes

The Miami Dolphins continue spending for the third-straight season by acquiring All-Pro Defensive Back Jalen Ramsey. With more high-end players, Miami is now limited in terms of "mid-level" options to fill out the depth chart. The Dolphins kept five defensive linemen to begin last season but haven't found a veteran replacement for John Jenkins. Due to injuries in the secondary, will Miami choose to keep fewer linebackers in order to solidify depth at cornerback?

Projecting Miami's 53-Man Roster: Is Wide Receiver the Hardest Position to Read? Aug 03, 2023

Show notes

The Dolphins had five tight ends and five wide receivers on the first 53-man roster of the 2022 season. Those numbers can be deceiving — considering Mike Gesicki was used as a receiver with more than 50 targets a season ago. Miami added receivers Braxton Berrios and Robbie Chosen to the mix this offseason while re-signing River Cracraft to a one-year due. Due to special teams' duties, is it possible the number of receivers kept on the roster balloons in 2023?

Miami Dolphins All-Pro Defensive Back Jalen Ramsey Suffers Torn Meniscus; How Much Time Will He Miss? Jul 28, 2023

Show notes

The Miami Dolphins turned off sliders on defense after trading for All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey in a deal with the Los Angeles Rams during the offseason. Ramsey's first game in a Dolphins uniform may be delayed after suffering a torn meniscus during practice on Thursday. The Miami Dolphins must now again lean on Kader Kohou and rookie Cam Smith in the secondary until the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback can return to the field. Miami sent a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long to the Rams in the trade during the offseason.

You Can Never Have Too Many Cornerbacks: Who Will Step Up Until Jalen Ramsey Returns From Injury? Jul 28, 2023

Show notes

Replacing a star player is never easy but that is what Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is tasked with doing after Jalen Ramsey suffered an injury on Thursday that will force him to miss an extended period of time. Undrafted rookie Kader Kohou successfully filled in for the injured Byron Jones last season and will again be asked to have more on his plate. That said, Fangio may through rookie second-round pick Cam Smith into the fire as a physical presence on the outside. What can we expect from a secondary that still includes Xavien Howard and Jevon Holland?
