Newkirk continues to provide strong and unwavering leadership of the organization.

They discuss many topics including PETA’s opposition to California’s Prop 12, veganism, the monkey-selfie lawsuit, raising awareness about animal issues, roadside zoos, loss of natural habitats, and much more.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 6.5 million members and supporters.

Striking at the Roots, by Mark Hawthorne

Animal protection is one of the most passionately debated issues of our day. In light of recent legislation and intensified pressure put on activists around the world, those advocates fighting for animal liberation or even animal welfare need a single resource covering the major, and some minor, models of animal activism. Striking at the Roots: A Practical Guide to Animal Activism brings together the most effective tactics for speaking out for animals and gives voice to activists from around the globe, who explain why their chosen models of activism have been successful — and how others can get involved.

    Hot animal news.

We conclude with news of Joe Biden’s new adopted pup, another puzzling stranding of pilot whales in New Zealand, and pounds of ingested plastic trash found in other whales’ stomachs is likely responsible for their deaths.

Resolve to help animals in the New Year

As 2018 draws to a close, many of us have begun to consider what we can do to make the New Year better for ourselves, for others, and for the world.

So it won’t surprise you that here at Animals Today, we are asking, what can I do in the coming year to help animals and to elevate my animal advocacy?

Peter and Lori offer a variety of suggestions to spark your thinking about this, including ways to help companion animals, moving to plant-based diets, staying informed on issues important to you, and many others.

    Diabetes in dogs

Then, Lori speaks with Dr. Doug Kunz, Medical Director at VCA Desert Animal Hospital in Palm Springs, California about diabetes in dogs. Correctly diagnosed and properly managed, diabetic dogs can enjoy happy, full lifespans.

Diabetes in dogs and cats can occur at any age. However, diabetic dogs are usually 4-14 years of age and most are diagnosed at roughly 7-10 years of age. Most diabetic cats are older than 6 years of age. Diabetes occurs in female dogs twice as often as male dogs. Certain breeds of dogs may be predisposed to diabetes.

    According to the AVMA…

Obesity is a significant risk factor for development of diabetes. As dogs and cats age, they may also develop other diseases that can result in diabetes or could significantly affect their response to treatment for diabetes, including overactivity of the adrenal gland in dogs (hyperadrenocorticsm) or overactivity of the thyroid gland in cats (hyperthyroidism), pancreatitis, heart disease, kidney disease, urinary tract infections and skin infections. The long-term use of medications containing corticosteroids is also a risk factor for diabetes.

Treatment of diabetes in dogs usually involves providing a special diet, maintaining consistent levels of exercise, and giving injections of insulin.

    Reindeer games

The show wraps up with some popular songs about animals, interesting reindeer facts and our holiday reminder that pets should not be gifts!

Animals Today December 8, 2018: Animals and mandatory evacuations in natural disasters. The dangers of raw meat pet food Dec 10, 2018
    Show notes

Animals and mandatory evacuations in natural disasters

We begin focusing on the impact of the recent Southern California fire on animals and their guardians. Known as the Woolsey Fire, this huge, destructive fire killed 3 people, destroyed 1,643 structures and prompted the evacuation of more than 295,000 people.

Frequent guest Bob Ferber and his animals were ordered to evacuate his suburban home with very little warning, and fortunately, his pets survived and his home was not damaged.

Animals and mandatory evacuations in natural disasters

Ferber is a long-term animal rescuer and former Los Angeles animal cruelty prosecutor. We explore the legal, moral and practical elements of mandatory evacuations when animals are involved including dogs, cats, horses and exotic animals.

A profile of animal advocate Eric Mills.

Lori then welcomes Eric Mills of Oakland California’s Action for Animals, to learn about his life as an advocate for animals. The organization currently focuses on Rodeo reform, charreadas (Mexican rodeos), and live animal food markets. Visit them on facebook. An informational booklet, Bucking Tradition, is available at no cost; email them at afa@mcn.org.

As much as we love our pets, their innocent and natural habits can cause serious property damage around the house if common-sense precautions are not taken. A recent example was uncovered when a stereo repair technician found copious amounts of cat hair interfering with the proper functioning of Peter’s high-end CD player!

    Listeners, you have been warned.

The dangers of raw meat pet food

Finally, Lori shares a new study showing that raw meat based diets for pets place owners at serious risk for infections from the meat. The pathogens may be passed on to people by direct contact with pets, from contaminated surfaces, and by cross contamination with human food. Plus, not only do the diets offer no health benefits for the pets, but the antibiotic resistant bacteria found in the meat may cause illness in pets.

Animals Today December 1, 2018: Fur farming in Europe. Is your city friendly for pets? Encouraging cats to stay hydrated. Dec 04, 2018
    Show notes

    Fur farming in Europe

We begin by welcoming Angela Grimes, Acting CEO of Born Free USA to tell us about their new report on fur farming in Europe. There is a very wide range of practices and laws across the continent, with Luxembourg, the UK, Austria, Slovenia Macedonia, and Croatia having total bans.

Where farming is conducted, the animals live in dirty, small, tightly stacked cages, enduring great stress, until they are killed often using inhumane practices.

Many fashion designers have discontinued their use of fur, and Angela says that the best way we can help end the industry in Europe is simply not to purchase fur products.

    Fur farming in Europe

The report is titled Cruelty Uncaged: European Fur Farm Laws (2018) and can be read here.

Is your city friendly for pets?

We continue discussing the most (and least) Pet-Friendly cities in the US. This survey rated cities in the broad categories of pet budget, pet health and wellness, and outdoor pet friendliness. The top pet friendly cities were: 1. Scottsdale, 2. Phoenix, 3. Tampa, 4. San Diego, and 5. Orlando.

The book, Rescuing Ladybugs, by Jennifer Skiff.Peter then welcomes Jennifer Skiff, author of Rescuing Ladybugs, Inspirational Encounters with Animals That Changed the World. Skiff takes readers on an around-the–world adventure with super animal advocates who share their personal stories on advocating for all sorts of animals. Buy it here.

    Encouraging cats to stay hydrated

Lori then continues speaking about dehydration in cats, presenting 10 ways to encourage cats to consume more water. Maybe one or two of these tips will appeal to your kitties?

    Encouraging cats to stay hydrated

Peter then describes our favorite water fountains from PetSafe.

And Lori describes the risks of toxic mushrooms to dogs. Since it is hard for most of us to determine on the fly if a given mushroom is poisonous, it’s best to prevent your dog from eating any mushrooms encountered outdoors. But contact your Vet at once if your pet does eat any of them.

Animals Today November 17, 2018: Greyhound racing to end in Florida. California Prop 12 passes, easing cruel conditions for some farmed animals. Nov 20, 2018
    Show notes

Greyhound racing to end in Florida

We begin with great news out of Florida!

The citizens have voiced their strong desire to end greyhound racing by passing Amendment 13. Peter speaks with Christine Dorchak with Grey2K USA, which has been fighting for greyhounds for 2 decades.

Dorchak calls greyhound racing industrialized cruelty, in which the dogs are kept confined in stacked crates for 20-23 hours per day, fed the poor quality raw 4D meat, are given little opportunity to socialize with each other, and then when they are let out to race, they face serious injury.

Greyhound racing to end in Florida

    Holly. Photos courtesy Grey2K USA

There are about 2000 racing greyhounds in Florida, so consider adopting a few; Christine explains how they make wonderful companions!

California Prop 12 passes, easing cruel conditions for some farmed animals.

In another victory for animals, California voters also overwhelmingly approved Prop 12, the Prevention of Cruelty to Farm Animals Act, sponsored by Prevent Cruelty California.

Hens, pigs and calves will benefit by getting a little bit more space. We expect this law, which goes into effect in 2020, to impact the entire nation. Interestingly, PETA opposed the proposition, claiming it would just serve to make consumers feel a little better about the cruelty the animals endure.

    California Prop 12 passes

So, Lori then explores the ongoing debate between animal welfare proponents, who seek to regulate the use of animals, and the so-called abolitionists, who wish to eliminate all use of animals and their products by people.

    Hot animal news

Then on a different note, Lori updates us on the Florida Everglades Burmese python invasion.

Fun with animals in Beatles songs.

And, who doesn’t like the music of the Beatles? Lori offers up a bit of much needed levity, with a fun quiz about Beatles songs with animals in their titles. And, coming up is International Cheetah Day!

    Getting to know Frank Hoffman.

Finally, Lori has an intimate chat with Frank L. Hoffman from All-Creatures.org to learn about his personal history and his professional work on behalf of animals. He offers a lot of wisdom from his admirable career!

Animals Today November 10, 2018: What dogs can’t have on Thanksgiving? Incredible animal adaptations. Nov 13, 2018
    Show notes

What dogs can’t have on Thanksgiving?

The show begins with Lori sharing her research on which Thanksgiving foods can be shared with pets, including suggested modifications of traditional dishes and ingredients to avoid.

What dogs can't have on Thanksgiving?

Feed your dog from your plate this Thanksgiving, and their holiday could be ruff! While nothing may feel better to you than a food-induced coma in your favorite recliner, there are several holiday foods you should keep away from your pup.

    Turkey traditions and the Presidency.

Then, Peter joins in as they discuss the absurd tradition of the Presidential turkey pardon.

The presidential pardon of the Thanksgiving turkey has become an annual event, but the peace pact between the fowl and the White House is a relatively new thing. And in fact, a few presidents actually ate their guests!

    Turkey traditions and the Presidency.

    Creator: Pete Souza

The first president to unofficially pardon a turkey was Abraham Lincoln, who instructed the White House to save a bird given to the president. Lincoln’s son had grown fond of the bird (and the president was a big animal lover).

But Lincoln didn’t start a tradition, and neither did President Harry S. Truman, who is often credited as the father of the presidential turkey pardon.

It was President George H.W. Bush who made the turkey pardon official when he took office in 1989. Since then, turkeys across the United States have rejoiced, at least one day a year, as the leaders have spared a lucky bird from the Thanksgiving table.

    Incredible animal adaptations.

Then, inspired by an incredible video about high-flying Himalayan geese, Peter and Lori present some of their most favorite, novel physical adaptations in the animal kingdom. They cover geckos, sloths, giant tubeworms and more.

    In search of cruelty-free automobiles.

In the final segment, learn about the use of shock wave sensors to protect elephants from poachers and robot drone falcons to deter live birds from airports. Lori concludes the show on a search for cruelty-free automobiles. It ain’t easy!

    Show notes

    Can climate catastrophe be averted?

In this show, we welcome Professor Richard Schwartz, Ph.D., to discuss whether a looming climate catastrophe be averted. He discusses the pressing issue of climate change, and how the widespread adoption of vegetarian and vegan diets are key to literally saving the earth.

Vegan and vegetarian diets are not just the latest trend. According to climate experts, these diets could actually help mitigate the effects of climate change.

    Can climate catastrophe be averted?

Transitioning towards a more plant-based diet could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70 percent, according to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

    Can climate catastrophe be averted?

Richard has been advocating for vegetarian and vegan diets for many years, both in his role as the President Emeritus of Jewish Veg and now as an independent author and commentator. He was early to point out the harm caused to the environment by modern industrial agriculture and has continued to be a strong voice for environmental protection and against animal cruelty.

Richard is Professor Emeritus, College of Staten Island, and the author of Judaism and Vegetarianism, Judaism and Global Survival, Mathematics and Global Survival, and Who Stole My Religion? Revitalizing Judaism and Applying Jewish Values to Help Heal Our Imperiled Planet, and over 250 articles at JewishVeg.org/schwartz

WWF reports humanity is wiping out global wildlife.

Lori begins with a shocking report from World Wildlife Fund, which demonstrates that humanity has wiped out 60% of all wild animal life on earth since 1970.

Peter and Lori then continue with other news, including President Trump’s signing of much appreciated legislation to continue funding NOAA’s marine debris program, celebrities are joining forces to end dog racing in Florida, and more!

    Diabetes in Cats

Next, because November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month, Lori speaks with Dr. Douglas Kunz, Medical Director of Desert VCA Animal Hospital about diabetes in cats, from symptoms to diagnosis to treatment. Did you know that diabetes is present in one out of every 200 cats and that it is more common in females?

Police are using training simulators for dog encounters.

Peter then welcomes John Thompson, Deputy executive Director and COO at National Sheriff’s Association. Thompson has been leading the effort to develop and make available realistic simulators to train law enforcement personnel to manage encounters with dogs, instead of shooting them.

A forever home for blind, FIV+ and FeLV+ cats.

Then Lori speaks with Alana Miller, President of Blind Cat Rescue, located in North Carolina. In addition to providing forever homes to cats with no or very limited vision, they also do the same for cats with feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus.

Miller reports the blind cats do surprisingly well without sight. The most common cause of blindness in her cats is neglect, specifically untreated eye infections, consequent to respiratory infections.

    Show notes

Who gets to keep the dog after a breakup?

We begin with Lori speaking with attorney, Mark Momjian about a groundbreaking law just passed in California, which gives family court judges greater latitude when deciding pet custody disputes in divorce and legal separations.

Not only does the law give family courts discretion to award sole or joint ownership of household pets, courts now have the authority to consider “care” of pets, including keeping them free from acts of harm or cruelty, as well as providing food, water, veterinary care, and safe and protected shelter.

This follows similar laws in Alaska and Illinois, and Momjian predicts more states to follow soon. The California law goes into effect Jan 1, 2019.

Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner Resigns Amid Criticism

Recently, an Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner lost his job after gruesome photos of his Namibian Safari were circulated. Animals Today October 18, 2018: The connection between dog breeding and dog euthanasia. What are the symptoms of a cat with allergies? Oct 18, 2018
    Show notes

The connection between dog breeding and dog euthanasia

We begin with Lori speaking to Elizabeth Oreck, National Manager of Puppy Mill Initiatives for Best Friends Animal Society about the connection between intentional dog breeding, overpopulation and euthanasia of homeless dogs.

For years, Lori has been explaining how dog breeders contribute to shelter crowding and consequently to the killing of far too many adoptable dogs. Listen in to hear Elizabeth’s perspective, as well as her opinions about the American Kennel Club.

any people don’t realize that when they buy a dog from a pet store or on the Internet, that dog most likely came from a puppy mill, a “factory farm” for dogs. In puppy mills, dogs live in small cages, often in the minimum legal size allowed (only six inches larger than the dog on all sides) and female dogs are bred as frequently as possible.

Life in a puppy mill is no life for our best friends. Even though more and more Americans are taking a stand against them, the U.S. still has about 10,000 puppy mills. Together, we can take a stand against puppy mills and make them a thing of the past.

What are the symptoms of a cat with allergies?

Then Lori welcomes back Dr. Doug Kunz to cover many aspects of allergies in cats. Allergies in cats are not as common as in dogs, but they bring similar challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Kunz is Medical Director at VCA Desert Animal Hospital in Palm Springs, California.

What are the symptoms of a cat with allergies?

    Hot animal news
