Passenger records are an excellent source of genealogical information. People have been exploring the world by sea for thousands of years and often used sea routes to settle in the new places they discovered. If your ancestors came to America by boat, this is what you need to know about using passenger records to learn more about them and their lives before they came to America.

AF-604: The Blizzard of 1886: When the West Froze Apr 08, 2022
    Show notes

The Great Blizzard of 1886-1887 is one of the harshest blizzards on record for the Plains states (though at the time, most of them were still territories, not yet admitted as states to the Union). The blizzard is immortalized and made famous for schoolchildren everywhere in Laura Ingalls Wilder's novel, "The Long Winter," part of her Little House on the Prairie series of books. Wilder weathered this blizzard as a teenager in South Dakota with her family and described her family and the town's hardships during this infamous weather event. It is an extraordinary first-hand account of someone who went through the harsh winter and survived during times before houses had things like electricity, indoor heating, and hot water plumbing.
