The Person Named Beside Your Ancestor | AF-1330 Oct 23, 2026
    Show notes

The person named beside your ancestor may be a witness, an informant, a neighbor, or someone whose work brought them into the record. Following one unfamiliar name can help you understand the people and circumstances around your family.

Join me as I look at reading a person's role carefully, keeping useful notes, separating people with the same name, and checking a possible relationship before adding it to the family tree.

What I Look for When I Return to an Unfinished Family Search | AF-1329 Oct 21, 2026
    Show notes

An unfinished family search can wait for months or years. When I return to one, I start by finding the question I left behind, reading the records I already have, and checking what my earlier searches actually covered.

Join me as I look at how old notes, familiar records, relatives, and a clear next step can help us begin again without starting over.

Immigration and Naturalization Records: Tracing Ancestors Across Borders | AF-1328 Oct 20, 2026
    Show notes

A passenger list may name a relative left behind. A citizenship petition may give you the hometown you have been trying to find. Immigration and naturalization records can add those details to a family story, especially when you read them together.

In this episode, I share ways to follow an ancestor from records in the United States back to a home overseas. We look at census clues, passenger lists, border crossings, and citizenship papers, along with the relatives, addresses, and witnesses who can help you tell two people with the same name apart.

I also talk about what to try when an arrival year changes from one record to another, when a name is missing from an index, or when a search returns more than one possible match.

What Happens When New Evidence Changes What I Thought I Knew? | AF-1327 Oct 16, 2026
    Show notes

There's a part of genealogy that I think is harder than reaching a conclusion in the first place: changing one.

Once I've worked on a person for a while, the dates, places, relationships, and records begin to feel settled. Then a new record appears and doesn't cooperate. A probate file may name a different parent, or a church register may give an age that makes an earlier identification difficult to defend.

In this episode, I look at how I reopen a conclusion, weigh the new evidence, correct the family tree, and preserve the reasoning behind the change. Losing a weak answer can still be progress—even when the new record leaves me with more questions.

How Much of My Family Tree Depends on My Own Judgment? | AF-1326 Oct 14, 2026
    Show notes

The longer I work in genealogy, the more I realize something about family tree research: a family tree isn't simply something I find. I build it. Records give me names, dates, places, relationships, occupations, witnesses, neighbors, signatures, and dozens of other clues, but the records don't come with instructions telling me exactly where every piece belongs.

That means I'm making decisions all the time. I decide whether the John Smith in one census is the same John Smith in the next, whether conflicting birth years can describe the same person, and whether a parent-child relationship has enough support to enter as a conclusion rather than a possibility.

In this episode, I look at how we weigh conflicting evidence, test our assumptions, and preserve the reasoning behind the connections in our family trees.

Columbus Day Makes Me Rethink the Word "First" Oct 12, 2026
    Show notes

Columbus Day has me thinking about one small word with a big meaning: first.

The first ancestor to come to America. The first family to settle in a county. The first name we can prove on a branch of the family tree. Each sounds like a clear beginning—but first in what sense, and according to whom?

In this article, I look at how we describe arrivals, early settlers, and the oldest records we have found, while remembering the lives and communities that came before them.

Columbus Day Makes Me Rethink the Word "First" | AF-1325 Oct 12, 2026
    Show notes

Columbus Day and genealogy make me think about one small word with a big meaning: first.

The first ancestor to come to America. The first family to settle in a county. Or the first name we can prove on a branch of the family tree. Each sounds like a clear beginning. Yet each leaves me with another question: first in what sense, and according to whom?

I want to keep asking that question when I write about the past. Finding a beginning is exciting. Understanding what that beginning actually means takes more care.

In this episode, I look at what a county history means by "first settler," why the earliest record I have found may leave much of a life unseen, and how an ancestor's story extends beyond an arrival or the edge of a family tree.

    Whatever Happened to You're Welcome? | AF-1324 Oct 09, 2026
    Show notes

I say "thank you." Someone answers, "No problem." The exchange is over in a second, but lately I've been thinking about those two words. Whatever happened to "you're welcome"? My curiosity about the history of "no problem" began with that small question.

At a restaurant, I'm thanking someone for bringing something to the table or helping with an order. I know that person is doing a job. I also appreciate the service. "You're welcome" seems to receive that appreciation directly. "No problem" leaves me wondering why a problem entered the conversation.

I was saying thank you. Was I supposed to think I had been a bother?

That was my first reaction. Then I wanted to understand what the person saying it might mean. Before long, a question about restaurant manners had led me to an old letter, a linguist's research, a hotel employee, and something I hadn't expected to be thinking about: the language we pass down in our families...
