American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn

A young mother is dead. Her husband says it was a tragic accident. Prosecutors say it was murder.

Caleb Flynn stands accused of killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio — and the story behind the charges is one of the most disturbing domestic cases to come out of Miami County in years. Now, as the case heads to trial, every piece of evidence, every witness, and every claim will be put to the test in open court.

This is American Monster: The Trial of Caleb Flynn — a special limited series from Hidden Killers, hosted by Tony Brueski. We’re covering this case gavel to gavel: the prosecution’s theory, the defense’s strategy, the evidence the jury will weigh, and the questions that may never get clean answers. From the initial investigation to the courtroom, this series breaks down what happened, what’s alleged, and what justice looks like for Ashley Flynn and the people she left behind.

If you’ve been following this case, this is where it all comes together. If you’re just hearing about it for the first time, start here.

    New episodes throughout the trial.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 4: FBI Door-Mark Testing Showed WHAT?! Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

FBI forensic examiner Sarah Stuchell gave jurors a closer look at the door-mark evidence in Caleb Flynn's trial. Her testimony drew a careful line between a tool being consistent with observed markings and proving that tool actually made them.

Caleb Flynn is on trial for the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, and has pleaded not guilty. The defense says Ashley was killed during a home invasion. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the scene to look like a burglary.

Stuchell said she tested numerous prying, gripping, and compression tools and compared those results with casts, doorknob parts, strike plates, and markings from the doors. She testified that marks on the door frame and marks created during FBI laboratory testing were consistent with a hammer seized from the Flynn home.

That finding stopped short of identification. Stuchell testified that the testing was inconclusive as to whether the tools examined could be determined to have made the marks on the doors. Her report therefore did not identify a specific tool as the source of those marks.

What Caleb Flynn's Daughter Said About the Other Woman Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

Matthew Keyt drove Caleb Flynn to the police station twice in the days after Ashley died, and on the ride home from the second interview Caleb told him he was afraid police would take both of the girls' parents away. Matt promised him that wouldn't happen. On the third day of the Caleb Flynn trial, Matt, his wife Kayla, and Ashley's parents took the stand, and Kayla described the day they told those girls who the other woman was.

Kayla Keyt testified she saw Caleb every other day, called him her brother, and told police they had the wrong man. She said she learned about the affair from the FBI and had never suspected it. She kept the books for the family flooring business and said Caleb's income topped $200,000. The company was to be gifted to her and Ashley equally, and Caleb asked in September to see her growth projections a second time.

Jill Smith described the 3 a.m. call, the story Caleb gave her about a cough and the couch and a gunshot, and the walk he took his daughters on days later. She said both girls came back nervous and the older one told her so. Todd Smith said his doubts began on the drive home from Quebec, over the dogs.

Captain Tony Smith showed the jury an insurance policy naming Caleb as Ashley's sole beneficiary, more than $84,000 in joint savings, and a monthly Snoopreport charge on Caleb's card. He also testified the other woman lost her church laptop and had her phone water-damaged in January. BCI found no foreign DNA. The defense established no gunshot residue test was ever done.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and related charges. Tony walks through what this family built for him, the account he gave each of them, and the 12-year-old's answer that ended the day.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 4: Door Evidence Said WHAT About Entry?! Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

Det. Zachary Farkus and FBI Special Agent Sarah Deamron combined two major threads of the Caleb Flynn case: the disputed break-in door and investigators' interviews with Alleigha Botner. Their testimony gave jurors new detail about what officers did, what they did not find, and where the limits of the searches remained.

Flynn is on trial for the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, and has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys say Ashley was killed in a home invasion. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the scene to look like a burglary.

Farkus testified that the door itself showed no pry marks or damage he believed demonstrated forced entry from outside, while the inside handle was missing. He said he searched most of the attic with metal detectors but could not reach every section, and he described repeated searches outdoors and in nearby vacant properties. He also testified about tracing a tip to Botner and reviewing camera evidence showing the timing of her vehicle's movements around the night Ashley was killed.

Deamron said Botner admitted an affair with Flynn and was more forthcoming during a later interview. She also addressed a claw hammer collected from Flynn's tool bench. According to Deamron, FBI testing found no paint on the tools, and the report left open the possibility that the item could have caused markings on the door. Under defense questioning, however, she said the report did not identify that hammer as the tool used, and Botner had not turned over a burner phone to the FBI.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 4: Jason Moore Tested WHAT in Court?! Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

The alleged break-in was tested against the damaged doorway itself as Det. Brad Kline and Lt. Jason Moore testified in the Caleb Flynn trial. Both officers told the court that the condition of the garage access door did not match an outside forced entry in their experience.

Caleb Flynn, 40, is charged in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, and has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys say Ashley was killed during a home invasion and police rushed to judgment; prosecutors allege Caleb staged the scene to make the killing look like a burglary.

Kline testified that debris from the broken lock was inside the garage. He said he and Det. Hammond removed the door frame, and the frame was assembled in the courtroom so its condition could be demonstrated. Kline also searched the attic for the gun, but said heavy insulation and inaccessible areas prevented a complete search. During cross-examination, he acknowledged investigators did not use an X-ray machine on the walls and that neighbors reported hearing nothing that night.

Moore used the same door setup to explain his view of the damage. He said the broken internal handle did not make sense for someone trying to force their way in because it would make opening the door more difficult. Moore described searching vent covers and other locations inside the home, along with outdoor searches using cameras, magnets, and additional tools. He said officers returned for numerous searches over the following weeks because each unsuccessful effort led them to broaden the next one and continue until they believed the available search options had been exhausted.

The Digital Double Life of Caleb Flynn Unpacked Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

If you want to understand the prosecution's theory of motive, you start with the phone. Caleb Flynn's digital records allegedly reveal a double life so vast and so meticulously maintained that investigators say it required a level of deception most people are incapable of sustaining. Over 100,000 text messages to another woman. Months of secret communication. All of it running in the background while Caleb served as a worship pastor, came home to Ashley, and presented himself to the world as a devoted husband.

And in the middle of all of it, one message that prosecutors say distills the entire case down to a single sentence. Caleb reportedly texted his mistress that if he could literally kill his wife and not go to hell, he would do it in a heartbeat.

Tony Brueski and former FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke spend this segment pulling that digital life apart layer by layer. Robin explains the behavioral mechanics of sustained deception at this scale -- the toggling between personas, the emotional regulation required to sit across from your spouse after sending intimate messages to another woman, and the personality profile that makes that kind of parallel existence reportedly possible.

They dig into the language of the kill text itself. Robin explains the significance of the conditional framing -- 'if I could' -- and the specific moral barrier Caleb reportedly cited: not prison, not getting caught, but going to hell. For a worship pastor, that moral calculus is not random. Robin explores what it means when someone frames lethal intent through the lens of their own religious framework and whether that framing suggests the person has already moved past the question of whether to do it and is reportedly negotiating only the consequences.

The defense has conceded the affair. The question now is whether the jury can separate the sin from the crime.

What Caleb Flynn's 911 Call Tells Investigators Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

Strip away everything else in this case -- the affair, the text messages, the courtroom drama -- and start where investigators started. Start with the 911 call. At 2:30 a.m., Caleb Flynn reportedly picked up the phone and began laying the foundation for what would become his defense. He told dispatch his wife had been shot. He said he was sleeping in the living room with a cough. He said he heard one gunshot and froze in place. And before anyone arrived to work the scene, prosecutors allege he was already feeding dispatch the outline of an intruder theory.

Tony Brueski and former FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke go through the recording in exhaustive detail. Robin explains what he listens for when evaluating a crisis call -- the difference between the fragmented, disjointed speech patterns of a person in genuine shock and the reportedly structured, narrative-driven cadence of someone who may have thought about what they were going to say before they picked up the phone.

The freeze response is central to Caleb's version of events. Robin puts that claim through a behavioral filter, examining the documented science behind how humans respond when they believe a loved one is in immediate lethal danger. The freeze response exists. It is real. But Robin explains when it occurs naturally and when, in his experience, it is more commonly a detail that surfaces only after the fact.

Robin also breaks down the concept of distancing language on the call -- the specific word choices that may reveal whether a caller is emotionally connected to the crisis or is allegedly observing it from the outside. It is a single phone call. But in the hands of a trained analyst, it reportedly becomes one of the most revealing pieces of evidence in the entire case.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 3: His Palm Prints Could Not Show WHAT? Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

BCI latent print expert Vicki Bartholomew told jurors that several prints from the Flynn property matched Caleb Flynn. The identification was clear, but the timing was not.

Bartholomew testified that palm prints found at the scene belonged to Caleb, along with latent prints lifted from the Ford truck door and a palm print recovered from the minivan. On cross, she said she had no way to determine when any of those prints were left.

Neighbor Kimberly Bingaman then described what her property did - and did not - record. She said her three dogs are usually vocal when there is a disturbance nearby, and she testified that her cameras captured nothing outdoors or around the residences.

Bingaman also recalled seeing a new camera near the Flynn home. Cross-examination established another limit: she could not say whether that camera was functioning.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to all charges in Ashley Flynn's death. Prosecutors allege he staged the scene to resemble a home-invasion burglary, while the defense maintains Ashley was killed during an actual home invasion.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 3: BCI Linked the Two Bullets HOW? Sep 22, 2026
    Show notes

The ballistics portion of the Caleb Flynn trial centered on a basic forensic question: did the bullets recovered in the Ashley Flynn investigation come from one firearm or more than one?

BCI forensic experts Aaron Schultz and Alex Miller testified that they compared the markings, striations, and other identifying features on the recovered bullets and shell casings. According to their testimony, both bullets came from the same gun.

The experts further testified that the gun used to kill Ashley Flynn had not been used in any other crime. Jurors heard that conclusion alongside the finding that both bullets came from the same firearm.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to all charges in Ashley Flynn’s death. Prosecutors allege he staged the scene to resemble a home-invasion burglary. The defense maintains an intruder killed Ashley and that investigators rushed to judgment against Caleb.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 3: Four DNA Scientists Found WHAT? Sep 22, 2026
    Show notes

The Caleb Flynn jury heard from four BCI forensic scientists whose work fed into one final DNA report. Andrea Weisenburger testified that she made the final conclusions after the team analyzed evidence connected to the home where Ashley Flynn was killed.

Nicole Augsback, Jennifer Akbar, Phillip Irion, and Weisenburger described a collaborative laboratory process rather than one scientist handling every sample from beginning to end. Their testimony focused on how the evidence was processed, analyzed, reviewed, and ultimately reported.

Weisenburger testified that the DNA testing did not reveal DNA in the home from anyone outside the people who lived there. That finding sits alongside the defense claim that Ashley was killed by an intruder and the prosecution allegation that Caleb Flynn staged the scene to resemble a home invasion.

Cross-examination focused on what DNA cannot establish. Weisenburger said there is no scientific way to tell when DNA was deposited on a surface. She also testified that a mixed sample from the truck console was predominantly Caleb’s DNA, while she could not identify who contributed the additional DNA.

Caleb Flynn, Ashley Flynn’s husband, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The testimony gave jurors both the laboratory conclusions and the boundaries of what those conclusions can prove.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 3: K9 Search Turned Up WHAT? Sep 22, 2026
    Show notes

A K9 search produced no alert outside the Flynn home, while a DNA specialist explained what she tested inside it. Those were the two forensic lanes jurors heard from ATF Special Agent David McMullen and BCI specialist Lindsay Koennig.

McMullen testified that he searched around the residence and along the wood line with K9 Hilton. He said Hilton did not alert anywhere outside the house during that search. The prosecution alleges Caleb Flynn staged Ashley Flynn's death to mimic a burglary; the defense says Ashley was killed by an intruder and investigators rushed toward Caleb.

Koennig testified that she tested DNA recovered from doorknobs and other household surfaces. She also analyzed DNA samples from Ashley and Caleb. The testimony details provided for this episode identify the testing process but do not provide a specific DNA result, so no match, exclusion, or unidentified profile is being inferred here.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to all charges in Ashley Flynn's death.
