American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn

A young mother is dead. Her husband says it was a tragic accident. Prosecutors say it was murder.

Caleb Flynn stands accused of killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio — and the story behind the charges is one of the most disturbing domestic cases to come out of Miami County in years. Now, as the case heads to trial, every piece of evidence, every witness, and every claim will be put to the test in open court.

This is American Monster: The Trial of Caleb Flynn — a special limited series from Hidden Killers, hosted by Tony Brueski. We’re covering this case gavel to gavel: the prosecution’s theory, the defense’s strategy, the evidence the jury will weigh, and the questions that may never get clean answers. From the initial investigation to the courtroom, this series breaks down what happened, what’s alleged, and what justice looks like for Ashley Flynn and the people she left behind.

If you’ve been following this case, this is where it all comes together. If you’re just hearing about it for the first time, start here.

    New episodes throughout the trial.

Caleb Flynn’s Mistress Heard ‘Kill Her’ and Did THIS Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Alleigha Botner sat in the witness chair and read Caleb Flynn’s texts to a jury deciding whether he killed his wife Ashley. One exchange from March 2025 stopped the room: she asked him “what can I do?” He answered “kill her.”

Botner, 24, was a worship leader at the Flynns’ church. She testified they exchanged more than a hundred thousand messages during an affair that started in 2024. She told the jury the talk about wanting Ashley gone came weekly, and after the couple’s anniversary cruise it escalated to “thinking about ways to kill her.”

Ashley discovered the messages during that cruise. She texted Botner and asked to meet. Botner said she was too busy to face her. Seven months later Ashley was shot twice in the head while she slept.

On the last night of Ashley’s life, Botner testified she went to ChatGPT and searched how to permanently delete their messages. She screenshotted the instructions and sent them to Flynn. His last text: “Good night, tomorrow’s a big day.” She testified she believed he meant divorce.

The morning Ashley died, Botner’s first instinct was “too much of a coincidence.” She texted Flynn asking if he was involved. Then deleted it. She lied to the FBI four days later, denying the affair. She told the jury she once loved him. Now she says she hates him — because she believes he killed his wife. Cross-examination hasn’t started.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 5: Botner Says Deadline Was OVER Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Caleb Flynn's former mistress, Alleigha Botner, testified that she spent the end of 2025 demanding that Caleb leave Ashley Flynn. First came a Christmas Eve deadline. Then came January 11. Botner told jurors that when the second deadline expired, she texted Caleb that she was officially moving on.

She said Caleb answered on January 12 that he was sorry but understood the relationship was over. Weeks later, on February 3, Botner testified that Caleb reached out again, this time sending lyrics to a song he had written for her.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty in the killing of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege Caleb killed Ashley and staged the scene to look like a burglary. His attorneys say Ashley was killed during a real home invasion and police rushed to judgment.

Botner's testimony gives the jury a date-by-date view of an affair that appeared finished in January, only to restart in February. That chronology now sits alongside the prosecution's broader theory of motive and the defense's argument that ugly relationship evidence does not prove murder.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 5: Botner's Message Drew WHAT Reply?! Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Alleigha Botner's morning testimony put one of her own messages on the screen for the Caleb Flynn jury. She read, "I want to kill her, Caleb." She testified that Caleb's response was, "That makes 2 of us."

Ashley Flynn is the murder victim at the center of this trial, and Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege Caleb killed his wife and staged their home to look like an intruder had broken in. His defense maintains Ashley died during a real home invasion and investigators rushed to judgment.

Botner's message changes the texture of this portion of the testimony because the violent language was not presented as one-sided. Prosecutors are using the text history as part of their case against Caleb, while the jury also has to assess the witness who participated in those conversations. The exchange is evidence the jurors heard; what they conclude it proves remains their job.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 5: Botner Reads WHAT He Allegedly Wanted?! Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Caleb Flynn's former mistress, Alleigha Botner, continued reading messages for jurors, including one she attributed to Caleb: "Please hire someone to take douche out!" The text landed as prosecutors continued presenting the private communications they say matter to their case.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley inside their Tipp City home and staged a burglary scene. The defense maintains that an intruder killed Ashley and that police rushed to judgment.

Botner's testimony gives jurors Caleb's alleged words from the affair rather than a summary of them from investigators or attorneys. Prosecutors can argue about why those words matter. The defense can argue about context and meaning. The twelve people in the jury box have to decide whether the message helps prove the state's case or simply documents an ugly private conversation.

How Caleb Flynn's Worship Career Gave Him the Perfect Mask Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Before the murder charge, before the affair, before the 100,000 texts prosecutors read to a jury, there was a man with a microphone. Caleb Flynn appeared on American Idol Season 12, told the country he loved his wife Ashley more than anything, and spent the next eleven years leading worship at churches in South Carolina and Ohio.

Prosecutors say the man behind that persona was planning his wife's death. The defense says the public Caleb Flynn was the real one, and the private messages were just ugly talk to keep a girlfriend satisfied.

Psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott joins Tony to examine how the pastoral world creates the perfect environment for someone with a massive ego to operate undetected. How does "good guy" credit at the altar get used to justify secret behavior? Was chasing an American Idol stage and chasing a church stage the same impulse? And what's left of the mask now that the community is watching the trial?

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence.

Why Caleb Flynn's Mistress Never Called the Police Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

Prosecutors in the Caleb Flynn murder trial say the former worship pastor and American Idol contestant sent more than 100,000 messages to his mistress in the year before his wife Ashley was found shot to death inside their Tipp City home. Among those messages, according to the state: texts where Flynn allegedly described staying up until 4 a.m. trying to figure out how to kill his wife without going to jail.

The mistress read those messages. She stayed in the relationship. According to the prosecution's account, she never reported them to anyone.

Psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott joins Tony to examine the question the jury and the audience are both asking: why didn't she call police? Scott breaks down the patterns that keep someone in a relationship with a person who is describing violent plans, the role of denial and emotional dependency, and what the defense's "appeasement" argument says about the psychology of affairs.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence.

Caleb Flynn Complete Case Analysis With Robin Dreeke Sep 24, 2026
    Show notes

This is the episode that puts every piece of the Caleb Flynn case into a single behavioral framework. Former FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke joins Tony Brueski for an extended analysis covering the 911 call, the affair, the alleged kill text, and the courtroom proceedings.

Robin starts with the call. He explains what the recording reportedly reveals about Caleb's state of mind in the minutes after Ashley was found dead -- the vocal markers, the immediate intruder narrative, the freeze claim, and the distancing language that may indicate a person is not experiencing a genuine crisis but is allegedly managing a situation they anticipated.

The conversation moves to the digital evidence. Over 100,000 messages to another woman. A text reportedly stating he would kill his wife in a heartbeat. Robin examines the behavioral escalation pattern embedded in that communication -- the way sustained deception reportedly creates its own momentum, the moral licensing that allows each transgression to justify the next, and the personality type capable of maintaining a second life at this scale while projecting normalcy to everyone around them.

The episode closes inside the courtroom. The defense opened with Proverbs and admitted the affair. The prosecution responded with physical evidence: a towel over Ashley's head, an allegedly staged break-in, and a husband found outside with his dogs. Robin draws the behavioral lines between every segment -- the language on the call, the psychology of the texts, and the physical choices at the scene -- explaining how they reportedly form a single consistent profile.

The defense says there is no forensic smoking gun. Robin examines whether the behavioral evidence is the smoking gun the prosecution does not need a weapon to prove.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 4: Alleigha Botner Reveals WHAT He Wrote?! Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

Alleigha Botner’s afternoon testimony focused the jury on messages prosecutors are using in the case against Caleb Flynn for the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Botner testified that a February 2025 message from Caleb read, “I need her to die, leave, or cheat again.”

She also told jurors she sent Caleb instructions on deleting messages because she believed communications between them could be subpoenaed during a divorce. Botner then read another exchange in which she asked what he wanted her to do and testified that he answered, “Kill Douche.”

The state moved through portions of what Botner described as 34 books of messages between the two. She testified that other messages included statements from Caleb saying he hated Ashley and wanted her dead. Prosecutors also showed videos Botner said Caleb sent her.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including aggravated murder. Prosecutors allege Ashley was killed at the couple’s Tipp City home and the scene was staged to resemble a home invasion. The defense says the home invasion was real and investigators rushed to judgment.

Botner’s testimony continues Thursday, with more of those communications still to come before the jury.

Caleb Flynn Trial Evidence Points to a Staged Scene Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

The courtroom evidence is building, and this segment covers every significant development from the trial proceedings. The defense made a dramatic opening gambit -- co-counsel Emily Smith began with a verse from Proverbs, admitted to the affair, and challenged the jury to separate a bad husband from a murderer. Lead attorney L. Patrick Mulligan's strategy is reportedly built on the absence of key forensic evidence: no gunshot residue, no established time of death, and no murder weapon.

Tony and Robin Dreeke examine that strategy and then turn to the testimony that may undermine it. First responders described the scene in detail. Ashley Flynn was on the left side of the bed with a towel placed over her head. Robin explains why that single detail reportedly speaks volumes about the relationship between the victim and the person who killed her. In decades of behavioral research, covering a victim's face is one of the strongest correlations with intimate-partner homicide rather than stranger violence. It allegedly indicates a killer who could not face the person they had just destroyed.

The prosecution walked the jury through the front door. It was unlocked. The damage to the door frame was reportedly inconsistent with a real break-in and appeared to involve multiple tools. Robin explains the concept of over-staging -- the behavioral tendency of perpetrators who fake a crime scene to add too many details, creating inconsistencies that a real intruder would never leave behind.

The defense argues prosecutors got tunnel vision, locked onto Caleb after discovering the affair, and shoehorned every piece of evidence into their theory. Robin examines whether that accusation has behavioral merit or whether the behavioral evidence from the scene -- the covered face, the staged door, and a husband standing outside with his dogs instead of at his wife's side -- allegedly tells a story that does not require any shoehorning at all.

Caleb Flynn Court Coverage Day 4: Botner's Valentine Text Said WHAT?! Sep 23, 2026
    Show notes

Alleigha Botner testified that Caleb Flynn messaged her on February 14 saying he was finally free of Ashley Flynn and had told Ashley he wanted a divorce. Sarah Stuchell's cross-examination put a very different issue before the jury: her forensic testing could not identify who used any tested tool or prove that one of those tools made the marks on the door.

Caleb Flynn is on trial for the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, and has pleaded not guilty. The defense says an intruder killed Ashley during a home invasion. Prosecutors allege Flynn staged the scene to look like a burglary.

On cross, Stuchell confirmed that her forensic comparison was inconclusive. She could not say who used any of the tested tools, and she could not identify any one tool as having made the marks on the door or door handles.

Botner testified that she first met Flynn in 2022 as an intern at his church and that their relationship became personal two years later. She said they referred to periods when Ashley was away as their “marriage weeks,” and the two got matching Harry Potter tattoos. Botner testified that Flynn used degrading names for Ashley, said he hated her, and repeatedly talked about wanting her gone. She told jurors he said at least monthly that he wanted Ashley to die and once said that, if he could kill her without going to jail or going to Hell, he would. Botner said she ended the relationship in December 2025, although she later received a February 14 message from Flynn saying he was finally free of Ashley and had told Ashley he wanted a divorce. She also alleged Flynn had hacked her Instagram and phone.
