Episode 419: Alright Scary - Buffy the Vampire Slayer: "Hush" Oct 15, 2023

Show notes

We are finally navigating the Buffyverse for Alright Scary this week with the Season 4 episode “Hush”! It’s as much about fairy tale monsters stealing voices and hearts across Sunnydale as it is about Buffy confronting her intimacy issues, Willow navigating a sexual awakening, Anya learning the complexities of human relationships and how much of our civility is tied to our communication skills. But it’s also a genuinely scary episode and a great entry point if you want to dip your toes into this series or just queen out on Sarah Michelle Gellar for 44 minutes.

Episode 418: Alright Scary - "Sleepaway Camp" (1983) Oct 08, 2023

Show notes

Alright Scary continues with the controversial (summer) camp classic from the slasher boom of the 80’s, “Sleepaway Camp”! This video store staple is best remembered for a twist ending that hasn’t aged well, but there’s so much to say about Aunt Martha, Ricky, Best Supporting Queen Judy, the unabashed sleaze and overt homoeroticism, that distinct Jersey vibes, the unfathomable hotness of Gene, Susie Snell, and how else to interpret what this movie could (hypothetically) be saying about Angela.

We're covering Season 5 of Drag Race UK exclusively on Patreon! Here is a sneaky preview of what to expect as we get to know ten new queens off to the camptown races for badges, screentime, meme potential and maybe even a guest spot on a future season (hey Sminty!). We acknowledge the eleventh elephant in the room, despite some seriously slick work by the editors, swoon over Best Supporting Kristen and waste no time picking potential faves.

Episode 417: Alright Scary - Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) Oct 01, 2023

Show notes

This week we discuss 1992's camp horror classic Bram Stoker's Dracula starring Gary Oldman as the highest drag queen in Transylvania opposite the everlasting 'Nona Rider. We praise the performances of Sadie Frost as the vixen Lucy and comment on the 90's aesthetic of showing gratuitous breasts. We go off about the costuming and the "naive" in camera effects and fantasize about the possibilities in Dracula 2000. Enjoy and happy October! Hope it doesn't suck! >:-E

Episode 416: Alright Scary - "Sleeping With the Enemy" (1991) Sep 24, 2023

Show notes

We’re kicking off Alright Scary with the mild, uncomplicated thrills of 1991’s “Sleeping With the Enemy.” Julia Roberts goes on a journey of identities, hairstyles and cross-country bus travel to escape from her abusive husband Patrick Bergin and start new life in Iowa and perhaps also in the hirsute arms of Kevin Anderson’s Ben, who will not stop jump-scaring her. Jerry Goldsmith’s score classes up the joint, and we have much to say about baths, carnival scenes, Nancy Fish on the bus, the cast of “Enough”, foyer finales and whether Laura/Sara could be arrested for faking her death.

Episode 415: Clueless (1995) Sep 17, 2023

Show notes

Alright Travis! This week something told us to not discount Miss Geist, and frankly, as if. We’re finally discussing Clueless! We have much to say about the queer and cringe of Christian, Dionne being the smartest person in the room, Best Supporting Brittany Murphy and the critical importance of Ambular, who would never wear something from Judy’s. The Cher and Josh love story may always feel like a bit of a Monet and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones may be a glaring reminder of the 90s ska craze, but this movie is an otherwise total Betty that we will certainly see again, and we hope not sporadically.

Episode 414: Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) Sep 03, 2023

Show notes

We’re kicking off back to school season with the ultimate day off in Chicago. While this movie is technically about Ferris, it’s really about Cameron, and of course Jeannie. To say nothing of the perils of Ed and Grace! And then there’s Mr. Bueller’s outings in that red Audi, Katie Bueller’s fashion choices, Best Supporting Simone, that girl from “Legend”, the well-endowed garage attendant, a Comeback cameo, a one scene Sheen, Nurse Florence, a potential future telenovela star, a gay maitre’d, and of course that girl on the bus with the hot gummy bears. In some ways, this movie is about everyone but Ferris.

Episode 413: Dirty Dancing (1987) Aug 21, 2023

Show notes

We’re headed to Kellerman’s for three magical weeks of summer lovin’ in the dreamy arms of a significantly older man. There’s gonna be class struggle, queer subtext, abortion, watermelons, THAT SOUNDTRACK, Jerry Orbach’s eventually donated eyes, the grandma from Gilmore Girls, kid sister Lisa, fertile college boys with toxic hotness, a resident cougar and klepto old lady (who we'd play) and of course, Best Supporting Penny stealing the entire movie before she retired and married Richard Marx.

Episode 412: Lip Syncs for Our Love Aug 06, 2023

Show notes

The time has come…*thunder sound effect*...for us to talk about lip syncs that we love! And while we couldn’t possibly discuss them all in one episode, we’ve each chosen five potentially under-celebrated or overlooked Drag Race lip syncs that we think deserve a moment of appreciation and perhaps even a rewatch.
