Episode 149 – Bant Turbofog Deck Guide Aug 09, 2018

Show notes

It’s a strategy as old as, um, 2007 according to Google Trends, and thanks to the controversial printing of an instant speed time walk at super duper rare, it’s back in Standard: Turbofog! The goal of this strategy is to draw multiple cards each turn, then mitigate any number of opposing threats with one fog each turn, then take over with time walks (which combine very nicely with the drawing multiple cards each turn thing that we’re already trying to do). Learn about every card in the deck in this week’s episode of Allied Strategies.

Next week, Episode 150, will NOT be our Mailbag episode – that’s getting pushed back to Episode 151 as we have a different, time sensitive episode in the works!

Episode 147 – M19 Draft Guide Jul 26, 2018

Show notes

All three of your podcast hosts have picked up some Professional REL Drafting experience with the new set at GP Sacramento and this week we’re sharing it with you! Learn about our opinions of each two-color combination, their relative power levels, and key commons/uncommons that you may have overlooked but that perform better in this environment than they normally would.

Next week’s episode will be Pro Tour-focused, and will reveal Neal’s secret strategies, so we won’t be releasing it until the PT is well underway to preserve that confidentiality.

Hardened Scales is an enchantment that combines with every creature in the deck to generate ridiculous bursts of value that are often immediately lethal through surprising board states and life totals. Episode 145 – M19 Sealed Primer Jul 12, 2018

Show notes

With Limited Grands Prix fast approaching, we decided to use this week to talk about our initial thoughts of the M19 Sealed format now that we’ve played some combination of physical and online Prerelease events.

We’ve also got a Mailbag episode coming up for Episode #150 (so 5 episodes from now) – if you have any questions you’d like us to answer, send them to us here, on our Patreon, on our Twitter, via carrier Pigeon, in person at GP Sacramento, or really any other way you can think of.

Episode 144 – M19 First Look: Limited Jul 05, 2018

Show notes

The last three core sets have each featured dramatically different limited formats. Magic Origins was a fast-paced format where being on the play was a big deal and missing your 2-drop was often fatal, whereas M14 was the polar opposite: a format where Divination was a first-pickable card, Opportunity was a bomb, and cards like Staff of the Mind Magus and Elixir of Immortality were solidly playable.

This week on Allied Strategies we’re taking a look at some commons and uncommons from M19 to try and get our finger on the pulse of the draft environment and determine what sorts of strategies may dominate.

Patreon Deck Episode: Nicol Bolas, the Ravager Jul 04, 2018

Show notes

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager has 4 qualities that make him potentially very powerful in standard. He’s cheap, he’s reasonably sized, he does something immediately when played, and he can take over games. Our wonderful Patrons therefore decided that this episode would involve us building an M19 Standard deck featuring Bolas. A normal edition of Allied Strategies will air tomorrow as usual.

This special episode is made possible by our Patrons over at https://www.patreon.com/alliedstrategies – they got access to it one week early as well!

Here is a link to the decklist we ended up with: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/allied-strategies-patreon-deck-nicol-bolas-1/

Episode 143 – M19 Second Look: Constructed Jun 29, 2018

Show notes

Last week’s formula worked so great that we decided to run it back – we’ve picked even more M19 cards that are even equally as exciting as last week and we broke down how they might fit into standard. Don’t worry, we didn’t forget to account for the 1-toughness tax!

Next week, on this feed, you’ll get access to our most recent Patreon Deck Episode one day before our next episode airs. If you’re a Patron, you already can listen over on your Patreon Feed! Next week’s regularly scheduled episode will cover M19 limited.

Episode 142 – M19 First Look: Constructed Jun 21, 2018

Show notes

The 2019 Core Set is fast approaching, and in classic Allied Strategies fashion, we’ve picked out a few cards each to talk about in terms of constructed (almost entirely Standard). We also spent a bit of time talking about Grand Prix Vegas, which was the first GP in half a year that all three of us attended.

Right now, the poll for the subject of our next Patreon Deck Episode is up on our Patreon for Friends of the Podcast to vote on – it’ll show up in this feed for everyone one week after Patrons get access to it!
