    Jaws (1975) | The Cutting Room Sep 15, 2023
    Show notes

The mechanical shark barely worked. Steven Spielberg's fix, keeping it hidden for most of the film, accidentally invented the modern blockbuster and frightened a generation out of the sea.

Jaws (1975) was the runaway, over-budget production that made Spielberg's name and the summer blockbuster along with it. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss head the cast, the open-ocean shoot tested everyone's patience, and John Williams turned two notes into pure dread. The direction, the writing, that improvised line and the Indianapolis speech all get their due, and then it's three scores out of 10 from John, Westy and Matt. Does the original blockbuster still need a bigger boat?

O Brother, where art thou? (2000) | The Cutting Room Aug 25, 2023
    Show notes

How do you turn Homer's Odyssey into a Depression-era prison-break comedy with a chart-topping bluegrass soundtrack? Only the Coen brothers would attempt it, and somehow they made it sing.

Their freewheeling musical comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) stars George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as three escaped convicts loose in 1930s Mississippi, with T Bone Burnett's soundtrack becoming a phenomenon all of its own. The Coens' direction and writing, the pioneering digital colour grading and the Man of Constant Sorrow craze get talked through in full. Luke, Westy and Matt close it out with a highlight each and scores out of 10. Does the old-timey odyssey strike a chord?

Back to the Future (1985) | The Cutting Room Aug 04, 2023
    Show notes

Five weeks into filming, the studio looked at the footage, panicked, and fired their leading man. Eric Stoltz was out, Michael J. Fox was in, and he ended up shooting a hit sitcom by day and a classic by night.

That near-disaster became Robert Zemeckis's Back to the Future (1985), the time-travel comedy Steven Spielberg produced and a DeLorean made immortal. Fox and Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown anchor it, the script is a masterclass in setup and payoff, and the whole thing essentially got made twice. John, Luke and Matt run through the recast, the science, the standout sequences and their final marks out of 10. Roads optional.
