    2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) | The Cutting Room Oct 31, 2023
    Show notes

Every spaceship, every space station, every convincing bit of weightlessness in cinema owes something to a film made before the technology to do any of it really existed. Stanley Kubrick simply invented what he needed.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), co-written with Arthur C. Clarke, gave us HAL 9000, the most famous match cut in film history, effects that still hold up half a century on, and an ending nobody has fully agreed on since. Kubrick had the models destroyed so no one could cheapen them in a sequel. John, Westy and Matt tackle the direction, the ideas and the sheer audacity of it, then land their scores out of 10. Make of the ending what you will.

    Total Recall (1990) | Ep. 28 - Part 2 Oct 13, 2023
    Show notes

The film was one of the most expensive ever made at the time, and its Oscar-winning effects were the cutting edge of what was possible. John, Westy, and Matt continue the story, down to that ambiguous ending.

We dig into the crew behind the film — the screenplay drawn from Philip K. Dick, Jerry Goldsmith's score, and the groundbreaking, award-winning effects work — before breaking down the finale, the dream-or-reality debate, the reception, and the legacy. Plus the hosts' final verdict and scores.

For how it all begins on Earth — Verhoeven, the cast, the first half — head to Part 1.

The Truman Show (1998) | The Cutting Room Oct 06, 2023
    Show notes

Imagine learning that your entire life, every friend, every sunrise, every ordinary day at work, has been a television show beamed to millions. One man is about to, and he has no clue the cameras are rolling.

Peter Weir's eerily prophetic satire The Truman Show (1998), written by Andrew Niccol, gives Jim Carrey one of his great dramatic turns, with Ed Harris, Laura Linney and Noah Emmerich around him. How accurately it predicted reality TV and surveillance culture, the psychological condition it inspired, the direction and the high-concept script are all on the table. Luke, Westy and Matt weigh in with a highlight each and three scores out of 10. In case we don't see you, does it earn top marks?

    28 Days Later (2002) | Ep. 27 - Part 1 Sep 29, 2023
    Show notes

Waking up in hospital, bike messenger Jim enters the eerily empty streets of London, not knowing what has happened in the last 28 days. Finding the only humans alive, Jim and his crew find out that nowhere is safe as they make their way through the rage infected streets, in search of safety. Danny Boyle’s aggressively low-fi entry into the zombie genre is as impactful as it was 21 years ago. Uncompromising and intentionally shot through low grade equipment, 28 Days Later kicked started a pop culture craze that is still felt today. There's no government. No army. No police. No TV, no radio, no electricity. But there’ll always be ATRM.
