Come Home - Rev. Tamara Lebak Sep 30, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, September 30, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Frederick Buechner writes, “What the word ‘home’ brings to mind, before anything else, is a special place that is clearly distinguishable from all other places. It is a place where you feel you belong, and which, in some sense, belongs to you. Home is the place throughout your life that you keep going back to, and which is apt to determine the kind of place – perhaps a place inside yourself – that you spend the rest of your life searching for, even if you are not aware that you’re searching.” Let’s explore the idea of home and its influence on us, as well as what it looks like to have a church home as theologically diverse as our own. SERMON DESCRIPTION Is Evolutionism enough of a worldview to base one’s religion, or moral system of living? We will explore how the Theory of Evolution offers a moral way of understanding the world and our place in it and how the evolutionary worldview does not discount, but uplifts the world’s great religious traditions. Difficult Decisions (Humanist Version) - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar Sep 16, 2012
    Show notes

Message delivered on Sunday, September 16, 2012, during The Point, the Humanist service at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the course of a life, everyone faces at least a few really hard, sometimes heart-wrenching, and often life-changing decisions. When it is a clear, good-versus-bad proposition, it is not usually too difficult. But many big decisions involve competing definitions of good and priorities that make them complex, and sometimes troubling, no matter which decision is made. We now have three services on Sunday in which to explore this subject from three distinct perspectives. At 8:30 a.m., at The Point, we will take a Humanist approach and explore how people may make such decisions without referencing scripture, God, or religion. At 10:00 a.m., in the Traditional Service, we will look to examples that inform us from the religions and cultures of the world, which may or may not include a Biblical perspective and will certainly be informed by the Humanist perspective. And at 11:30 a.m., in our Contemporary Service, we will have the benefit of these other perspectives to introduce, but we will be sure to highlight what the Bible can teach us about making really difficult decisions. Comfortable Inaction - Rev. Gerald L. Davis Sep 02, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, September 2, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald L. Davis, Adjunct Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION As we bid farewell to the sultry days of this record-breaking Oklahoma summer, we notice how we have gravitated toward states of being that do not move us to exertion. For sure, heat makes you weary. Our comfortable twenty-first century conditions make a distant memory of the kind of heat that sapped our strength and made early rising a must if there was to be any work done. We have become conditioned to the air conditioner. I’m not mad at ‘ya! Our bodies need that kind of relief. But what about our spirits? We constantly wage conflicts, regardless of the weather, between wanting to “do something” and comfortable inaction. I want to speak to your spirits about ways and means of moving outside our comfort zones. What Came Over Me? - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar Aug 26, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, August 26, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Have you ever noticed yourself getting very upset, very depressed, or very desirous about someone or something and wondered afterward, “What came over me?” In ancient times, we might have thought of these occurrences as possessions. Even today, there are people who seek out clergy to perform exorcisms to rid them of what they consider a demonic possession or a spell. What comes over us can be something as common as an uncontrollable addiction, a bad temper, a mental disorder, a feeling of shame, or a response to past trauma. Psychologists often refer to “buttons” that can get pushed by a person or situation and that can send us over the edge of control. Part of the journey of being human involves realizing that there are chemical, psychological, and situational circumstances that can lead us to undermine our own effectiveness and success and can hinder our capacity to be agents of free will. On Sunday I will explore how and why we sometimes feel overcome, and some of the things we can do to take back control. Who Are Our Neighbors? - Rev. Tamara Lebak Aug 19, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Historical data from the last 30–50 years, according to sociologist Keith Hampton, shows that neighboring in America has declined. A current study found that only 25 percent of us know our neighbors’ names, and 8 percent don’t know any of them at all. However, the study also suggests that “neighboring may be an important part of the everyday support people get.” The world’s religions ask us to pay attention to who we call neighbor and how we treat them. In the Christian scriptures, we are told in Mark, chapter 12, that there is no commandment greater than this: [30] Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. [31] The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Let us explore how we define neighbor, and how we can offer support without feeling overwhelmed or overtaken. Extremism... is No Vice? - Pastor Randy Lewis Aug 12, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Pastor Randy Lewis, Student Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION It has been said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." The quote implies that for the sake of liberty, extremism can be justified. For liberty’s sake, we’ve seen passions inflamed, innocence sacrificed, and violence encouraged. And yet, there are a few who question whether we are better for it. We all have our stories about where we come from, how we got here, and where we are headed. And we often live in those stories, choosing to believe that which we’ve concluded to be the truth. Often, we respond to each other based on our created stories; and after we have told them enough times, at some point, the actual truth is immaterial. This is a predicament that many of us face, impaired by our own sense of truth or what is right. There are those in our nation who are polarized because of what they have chosen to believe about our country, politics, religion, and one another. As a result, we have seen incivility, where the reasonable become unreasonable and the fair and balanced become uncompromising, partial, and unstable. I ponder the scripture that states, “A house divided cannot stand.” How can we remain so uncompromising, so transfixed in our own sense of what is right and, at the same time, continue to stand together as a nation? While many may no longer believe it, I say there is hope. Join me this Sunday, as we consider what is possible! Sermon delivered on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gary Kowalski, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Back in town for his high school’s 40th reunion, Rev. Gary Kowalski (who grew up in All Souls) muses on what has changed for better and worse in the intervening decades – particularly in the department of race relations. Gary is minister emeritus of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington, Vermont, where he has served on that state’s advisory panel to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
