The Gift of Acceptance - Bishop Carlton Pearson Nov 25, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton Pearson, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Giving is something we do, given is something we are, or should be. One is an external act, the other is an internal fact. Deep within the soul and spirit of humanity is an innate and intrinsic virtue and valor to give as well as receive. It is natural law. There is, in all of us, a powerful sense of worth, inward wealth and desire, indeed a need to serve, share, and show the light and love we all came here with. Doing so is the irresistible discipline and divinity of the Self. Join me, as we explore the ancient art of giving and receiving, and prepare for the season ahead. The Gift of Acceptance - Rev. Barbara Prose Nov 25, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Do you remember the Lone Ranger? The iconic American hero, who rode into towns along the Western frontier, saved the day, and then rode away before anyone could thank him? As we leave Thanksgiving behind and head toward the great gift exchange season of Christmas, I’ve been wondering why it is so difficult for many of us, not just the Lone Ranger, to receive. Paradoxical as it may appear, giving is often easier than receiving. Not just material gifts, but gifts of friendship, trust, and even love. For some, once we receive and recognize a gift, we feel we also owe something in return. Others may believe they are not worthy of receiving. No matter which role you prefer, this ancient tradition that traces back to the ancient Babylonians, the Druids, and the Romans, depends on both – a giver and a receiver. Sociologists, psychologists, and economists agree that gift exchanges have been, and continue to be, a powerful force for communities and civilizations. We explore the significance, the benefits, and the risks of gift exchanges, past and present. Even When the Rain Doesn't Come - Pastor Eric Banner Nov 18, 2012
    Show notes

Message delivered on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Eric Banner, Intern Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION It's not hard to choose gratitude when times are easy, but it is even more important to choose gratitude when times are tough. In this message I explore what Oklahomans know about surviving hard times, like the Dust Bowl and having your house burn down, and yet still finding something to be grateful for. The first step is having a regular practice of gratitude, and using times like Thanksgiving to remind ourselves of all that we already have to be grateful for, especially when it feels like there's nothing but the blue sky and a stool to sit on. What will you find to be grateful for, even when the rain doesn't come? United We Stand - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar Nov 11, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 11, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Patrick Henry (in 1799) famously said, “United we stand; divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.” It is said in different words in the Bible, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Mark 3:25 Democracy works because we are united by a vision and set of values larger than any party, platform, or position. All Souls is the same, in that there are often people on both sides of every social, political, and economic debate who call this church their home. We have been successful in being able to hold divergent opinions and disagree while still retaining our loyalties to our church home. This spirit began at the founding meeting of the church. On this Sunday following a national Presidential election, we share the spirit that binds us together as a nation and a church even when differences could divide us. It is good to be reminded of our highest ideals, as well as what has inspired the best of the best to remain loyal to something higher than their own opinions, agendas and biases. It is the root of greatness. Choose Gratitude - Rev. Tamara Lebak Nov 04, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 4, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Author and researcher Dr. Robert Emmons believes he has discovered what gives life meaning: Gratitude. Emmons is a professor at the University of California and supports his claim with research that suggests people who view life as a gift and consciously acquire an “attitude of gratitude” improve their emotional and physical health. According to Emmons, gratitude is a “chosen attitude.” We must be willing to recognize and acknowledge when we are the recipients of an unearned benefit. In our Humanist service at 8:30 a.m., we explore this choice of gratitude. At 10:00 a.m. in the traditional service, the message is further illustrated by a children’s story from the Bhagavad Gita, and in the 11:30 a.m. contemporary service we hear about Jesus’ healing of the lepers in the Gospel of Luke. Mormonism? - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar Oct 28, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Since Mitt Romney became the Republican nominee for president, many people have wondered, “What exactly is Mormonism?” “Is it Christianity? ”Do they really believe Jesus will return to earth in Missouri?" There are many questions and much interest, and there is even an award-winning Broadway musical called The Book of Mormon. Rick Fortner and a host of friends have worked up a special song from the musical to accompany our service exploring the foundations of Mormonism and whether any of this should matter when we step into the voting booth in the coming election. No Offense - Rev. Tamara Lebak Oct 21, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION There is a wonderful scene in Alice in Wonderland where Alice is swimming in a pool of her own tears, and she encounters a mouse swimming along near her. Alice innocently tries to connect with the mouse around stories of her cat Dinah. Alice realizes that she is not connecting, yet continues to insert her foot in her mouth several times. “Oh dear!” cried Alice in a sorrowful tone, “I’m afraid I’ve offended it again!” For the Mouse was swimming away from her as hard as it could go, and making quite a commotion in the pool as it went. So she called softly after it, “Mouse Dear! Do come back again, and we won’t talk about cats or dogs either, if you don’t like them!” When the Mouse heard this, it turned around and swam slowly back to her. Its face was quite pale, and it said in a low trembling voice, “Let us get to the shore, and I’ll tell you my history, and you’ll understand why I hate cats and dogs.” In order to expand our own understanding in the world, we must be in relationship with difference, and stay in relationship when in conflict. When we find ourselves offended by another’s behaviors or actions, it is often the differences between us that make a difference to us. What do we do when we have offended another unintentionally? How do we handle being offended? In the Christian scriptures, offending another person parallels the concept of putting a stumbling block before them. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way. (Rom. 14:13; cf. Rom. 14:20) Is it a sin both to offend and to take offense when none is intended? Come and explore with me the idea of causing and taking offense. Back to the Future - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar Oct 14, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Last Sunday, I changed my sermon topic to respond to a tragedy in our community. I want to thank everyone in the family of All Souls for rising to the situation and pulling together to respond with love and compas- sion. This coming Sunday, I will return to my original message from last week under a new title – a sermon inspired by my recent trip to our Partner Church in Romania. It was like walking back through 450 years of Unitarian history. I saw the rock upon which Francis David stood as he proclaimed his progressive faith in the midst of the Protestant Reformation and converted King John Sigismund to the religion that became known as Unitarianism. I also visited the place where the king and Francis David proclaimed Europe’s first declaration of Religious Freedom in 1568. It was a time of religious wars and conflict across the continent, and these men spread a vision of tolerance. What is interesting is how similar those times are to our times now and how their actions can inspire our own. When Everything Seems Wrong - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar Oct 07, 2012
    Show notes

Sermon delivered on Sunday, October 7, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION How can life be all right, when everything seems all wrong? When facing difficult, life-altering circumstances in our lives, when dealing with bitter consequences of choices that we or other people have made, and when wondering what to do and struggling to make sense of it all, sometimes we need to remind ourselves of grace. Grace gives us a perspective that makes forgiveness and healing possible. As we give grace to others, we should also accept it from others and extend it to ourselves.
