Building a Business with Josh Lewis + Maggy Nyamumbo Dec 08, 2020
    Show notes

If you've ever wondered what it was like to have your own business, be your own boss, and become an entrepreneur, you'll get the real scoop on what it's like in this episode. Alex Aiono is joined by business owners Margaret Nyamumbo and Josh Lewis to unpack all the blood, sweat and tears that go into business ownership. Entrepreneurship is no easy way of life, but especially not for these two - both have been disrupters in their industries. Josh Lewis is the creator of Beat Kicks - a revolutionary cover for your headphones that nobody knew they needed until it existed - and turned it into a million dollar+ company. Maggy Nyamumbo is the owner of Kahawa 1893 and a third-generation Kenyan coffee farmer - she's using cutting edge tech and harnessing blockchain to benefit the people who actually work on the coffee farms, rather than just the big coffee corporations. Whether you've always wanted to own your own business and set your own hours, or you're just looking for really great holiday presents for your family, take a listen to this fascinating episode.

Binge Eating: Food + Family with Bubba Aiono + Mauterangimarie Clark Nov 17, 2020
    Show notes

Food and family go hand-in-hand, and often have deep ties to our culture and heritage. Food is love in many families, but complicated patterns come to light when guilt, shame, and pressure to eat enter into the mix. Alex Aiono is joined by his cousin, actor Bubba Aiono, as well as University of Otago researcher Mauterangimarie Clark to explore the relationship of food to culture, and why our access to food (or lack thereof) can have a ripple effect on how (and why) we eat what we do.

Bubba and Alex share about their struggles with binge eating disorder and crash diets. They dig deep into the ways in which generational trauma around food is passed down; when one generation doesn't know where their next meal is coming from, a scarcity mindset can be passed down - even when poverty has turned to privilege. Expert Mauterangimarie Clark uncovers why we make the choices we do around food, and how we can change the conversation and break unhealthy patterns.

Are You a Target for Voter Suppression? With Nithya Raman + Aaron Thompson Oct 20, 2020
    Show notes

Voter suppression is more common and insidious than you think - and the fact is, you've likely experienced it in one form or another. But there are ways to keep yourself from falling for tricks online and combat long lines at the polls.

In this episode of Let's Get Into It, we're joined by urban planner, former executive director of Time's Up Entertainment and LA City Council candidate Nithya Raman, as well as voting rights activist Aaron Thompson. Nithya shows us the massive differences we can make in our everyday lives by voting for in local elections - we're talking how much you spend on your rent every month and other things that directly affect you. She also tackles why it matters where a candidate's money comes from, and why being angry can be a powerful tool.

Aaron and Alex unpack the dark underbelly of voter suppression, why you might be a target, and how you may already have been impacted and not even know it.

Voting with your Heart with Katy Stoll + John Olds Oct 13, 2020
    Show notes

Voting can feel like you're choosing between the lesser of two evils. Tons of people feel stuck between a rock and a hard place (especially this year) when they want to vote for their ideals, but don't feel like their party's candidate will give them what they want. If you're feeling conflicted, Katy Stoll of the Worst Year Ever podcast and John Olds of Gen-Z GOP are here to talk about what you can do about it (even if you're not old enough to vote!).

Alex Aiono's two guests this week may come from different ends of the political spectrum, but this discussion of politics is different. We find common ground between Republicans and Democrats, and find that the frustration over the chosen Presidential candidate turns out to be totally bipartisan. If you're feeling anything other than gung-ho about your candidate, this episode is for you. And remember to cast your vote!
