CIO Tim Creasey at the Intersection of Agile and Change Management with Agile Amped at ACMP2016 Jun 16, 2016
    Show notes

Email Monday, training Tuesday, change Wednesday--that's how quickly some people think change happens. Prosci CIO Tim Creasey points out that change management aims to "prepare, equip and support people to be successful in the changes" requested of them, and that process needs to time to take effect. Tim shares his thoughts of how companies who undergo an enterprise-wise change like an Agile transformation fail to invest adequately in the change management aspects. And then, if the company is successful in transforming to Agile, they don't know how to deal with the pace of change. A clear example of this is the stark difference between the rate of change in customer-facing technologies and internal technologies implemented by a company's IT department. Tim also shows how a change model like ADKAR can work in a Scrum environment. Tim Creasey is a dynamic presenter, researcher and thought-leader on managing the people side of projects and initiatives to deliver organizational results and outcomes. Through conference keynotes, presentation, webinars, articles and tools, he has advanced the discipline of change management by moving it out of the "soft and fuzzy" realm toward a structured, rigorous approach for driving benefit realization and value creation on projects. Tim coauthored the book Change Management: The People Side of Change and led Prosci's last seven benchmarking studies. Amy Haworth & Susie Patterson: Anyone Who Tells You Org Change is Easy is Lying at ACMP2016 Jun 15, 2016
    Show notes

Amy Haworth of Citrix and Susie Patterson of Prosci sit down with Agile Amped to dispell any misinformation out there about how easy building an enterprise change capability is. In short, it's not. The duo share with us their thoughts on how to build effective change management into projects, how to help leaders build their leadership competency, and how to empower employees throughout the enterprise to change for the better without loss of effectiveness. They highlight some of their challenges and successes and also touch on how Agile has changed change management, forcing change agents to focus on how to help people achieve a smaller-scope, more immediate change with more predictable results. This contrasts greatly with the long horizons that traditional change management programs typically leverage. Wendy Quan Finds the Business Value of Pairing Mindful Meditation with Change Management at ACMP2016 Jun 15, 2016
    Show notes

More and more people are practicing mindfulness meditation in their personal lives. Over the last six years, Wendy Quan has found that "bringing this into the workplace can really make a powerful difference to how people build their resiliency to change and have a different perspective of what's going on in their lives." Wendy has been working to help organizations recognize the value of incorporating meditation into the business because of the business value it can provide. In particular, Wendy's research has demonstrated that mindfulness meditation can help businesses execute their change initiatives more effectively by helping people mindfully consider their individual impact on the change "in the safety of their mind". She asks powerful questions to engage individuals in the change process including: Can you describe the change in one sentence? Can you describe what would happen if you didn't take part in the change? What repercussions might there be. Wendy even offers an example of how to implement such a program! Stacy Aaron Expects Resistance and Works With It at ACMP2016 Jun 14, 2016
    Show notes

Stacy Aaron is surprised when she encounters change agents who are themselves surprised by the resistance they face when implementing change. After 20 years of experience as a change leader, Stacy has come to expect resistance and to learn from it. She says there are motivating forces behind resistance to change, a common one being a fear of loss of control. Sometimes, she notes, the strongest resistors have misinformation and, when invited into the change program as an active contributor, these people who once only voiced concerns suddenly become change advocates. Stacy also touches on cultural that can help or hinder change, because a company's values can directly conflict with the change goal, which makes achieving that change all the more difficult. Stacy Aaron has 25 years of business and academic experience specializing in change management, marketing and organizational behavior. Stacy, with her partner Kate, founded Change Guides in 2005 and co-authored two popular books on organizational change management, The Change Management Pocket Guide and The Eight Constants of Change. Patrick McCreesh & Victoria Grady Crunch the Numbers to See if Washington Can Change at ACMP2016 Jun 14, 2016
    Show notes

Attachment Theory and Big Data don't obviously go together, but after meeting at the 2014 Change Conference, Patrick McCreesh and Victoria Grady decided to see if they couldn't combine the two and help answer an interesting question: Can Washington Change? 2016 is an election year, so presidential hopefuls have been traipsing about the nation promising change. However, rather than taking them at their word, Patrick and Victoria have been looking at surveys conducted over the last 15 years aimed at ascertaining what the two million federal employees who took these surveys thought about Washington's ability to change. Attachment theory helped the duo identify which things (called "transitional objects") helped federal employees deal effectively with change or how the lack these transitional objects might have impeded change. Andrew Johnson Talks Conscious Change Leadership and Classic Leader Development Culture at ACMP2016 Jun 13, 2016
    Show notes

Andrew Johnson sits down with Agile Amped at the Change Management 2016 conference to discuss conscious change leadership and why some leaders simply can't bring themselves to fully engage in their own change initiatives because of deep-seated internal biases. Some pragmatic leaders don't think that personal development is important to their ability to lead, which Andrew suggests is a product of our classic leader development culture: as you rise in the ranks and become leaders, they perceive their work as "more about blessing and delegating, as opposed to actively participating." These leaders may feel that, by getting their hands dirty and rubbing shoulders with the people of their company to effect change, they are somehow betraying everything they did to become leaders in the first place. In his work, Andrew helps leaders figure out why they resist engaging as a sponsor and how to overcome that to become better leaders. Andrew Johnson is a Senior Change Consultant at Being First, Inc. He is a pioneer in breakthrough approaches to multi-stakeholder collaboration on large-scale infrastructure change projects, and consultants to executives on major transformational change projects across industries and countries. Sadaf Khan Breaks Up Big Change into Agile-Sized Chunks at ACMP2016 Jun 13, 2016
    Show notes

Change is a difficult process that can take a long time to take hold regardless of the size of the change. But when you get into larger change initiatives, such as enterprise transformations, the work involved can quickly become daunting. Because the entire picture is never clear, Sadaf Khan helps people realize the value of breaking change down into smaller chunks in a very Agile way. Sadaf champions making decisions toward achieving "the full picture" (whatever that may be) based on the short-term data that is available now. Sadaf Khan is a Business Change Manager at the Emirates Group. SolutionsIQ's William Rowden hosts at Change Management 2016 (http://www.acmpconference.com/Join-Us). Linda Ackerman Anderson: Transformations Start with the Moment of Insight - at ACMP2016 Jun 10, 2016
    Show notes

Insights are ways of being -- a look into the mindset, culture, and values that the organization wants to espouse. Linda Ackerman Anderson of Being First says it's important to attach mindset, culture and behavior to real business results because that is what ultimately sustains the business transformation. Linda walks us through the nine-phase methodology that she uses to help organizations transform. "We're looking broadly across the entire organization [to find] what's out of place for the achievement of the outcome that we want and what has to be realigned." Dean Anderson: "Leaders Either Enable or Block Change" - with Agile Amped at ACMP2016 Jun 10, 2016
    Show notes

Being First has focused on designing and leading transformational change for 40 years. CEO Dean Anderson has been watching Agile grow in the past decade or so and has come to recognize its value. Dean says that change management and Agile share similar values and philosophies in "how to drive high performance in individuals, teams and organizations". In his work, Dean focuses primarily on two areas: leadership mindset and behaviors and the process design for the transformation journey. On the topic of leadership and change he says, "There's a direct correlation between the success of the organization's transformation and the transformation of the leadership, because they're either enabling or blocking the transformation." Therefore an organization's transformation truly begins when the leadership and executives are aware of the change they themselves have to experience on an individual level. Daryl Conner Sez Pair Character with Presence to Raise Your Game at ACMP2016 Jun 09, 2016
    Show notes

Many change professionals get the methodology down pat but fail to recognize the importance of character and presence in effecting change. Daryl Conner's work focuses on rectifying this. Rather than helping consultants choose from a grab bag of possible "best" characteristics, Daryl helps these individuals find their own true nature, the idea being that genuine people are more impactful than those who are just acting out learned traits. The key is for change leaders to balance their true character with the amount of directness that their clients will appreciate. Daryl is founder and chairman of Conner Partners (a consulting firm specializing in strategy execution), Conner Academy (a professional development firm supporting leaders and change practitioners who are exploring character and presence as a means for advancing their capabilities), and Conner Advisory (a consulting firm dedicated to serving leaders who are pursuing "changes that matter").
