Why You Lose Muscle as You Age — And How Strength Training Fights It | Dr. Natasha Barnes Mar 26, 2024
    Show notes

Why do we lose muscle as we age—and how much of that decline can strength training prevent?

Dr. Natasha Barnes is a former national champion climber, elite powerlifter, and clinician who has spent years helping athletes get stronger, recover from injury, and keep performing over time.

In this conversation, Natasha explains why strength training becomes increasingly important with age, what happens to muscle mass after 30, and why maintaining strength may be one of the most important things we can do for long-term physical performance.

    We also cover:

    • Why muscle loss accelerates as we get older
    • How strength training helps preserve muscle and performance
    • Why older adults may need more protein—not less
    • The role of sleep, nutrition, stress, and training load in recovery
    • Why many aches, pains, and injuries don’t require you to stop training
    • When mobility work actually matters—and when it may be unnecessary
    • How Natasha became stronger and more athletic in her 40s than she was when she was younger

At the Edge of the Map — Preparation, Fear, and Alaska’s Wild Water | Katrin Tomanek Mar 20, 2024
    Show notes

🌊"I ate 28 cals of chocolate for each mile paddled" 🌊
Katrin Tomanek is a true multi sport athlete who blends her career as a topnotch data scientist, with a passion for pushing physical and mental boundaries through uncommon solo adventures in wild and beautiful places.

Born in Germany, and a former rock climber, the 44-year-old has quickly made a name with some remarkable accomplishments in kayaking and bicycling. Last year she finished a solo kayak trip that spanned over 52 days and with paddling 1,200 miles through the remote Alaskan Inside Passage. She also regularly undertakes bicycling quests such as self-supported bikepacking across the Andes, and also to Burning Man :)

To me what makes Katrin’s feats remarkable are her thoughtful planning, her ability to learn from prior experiences, and the clutch one, to meticulously plan for any / all contingencies.

Katrin's adventures are defined by foresight, spunk, endurance, and the ability to thrive in solo wilderness environments for weeks at a time. How do you avoid getting marooned during king tides, and dodge grizzlies in bear infested landings, listen on!

After the Fall — Addiction, Recovery, and Finding the Ocean Again | Tyler Farnham Feb 23, 2024
    Show notes

“Surfing was always on my mind,” said the Cocoa Beach, Florida native. “I had a poster of Cory Lopez hanging up in my rehab room for inspiration. I never realized how much I loved surfing, until it was taken away from me.”

Thrilled to be joined by surfer, author, and motivational speaker Tyler Farnham. Originally from Cocoa Beach, Florida, Tyler has turned his lifelong passion for surfing into a way to inspire others. Reborn twice, after suffering a catastrophic skydiving accident over 10 years ago, Tyler managed to battle back from severe injuries, and then later, opioid addiction. Now living by the mantra of using outdoor adventure and nature as therapy, he shares his story of resilience with the hopes of uplifting people who may be struggling. Tyler's perseverance through extraordinary hardship can teach us the power of grit, community, and the healing force of Mother Nature.

🚑 On Easter Sunday 2009, at age 25, Tyler broke nearly every bone in his body during a skydiving accident. His road to recovery was long and painful.

💊 The heavy pain meds led Tyler down the path of opioid addiction, further complicating his recovery

📒 Journaling, community, and his love for the ocean aided Tyler's resilience and ability to get clean
🏄🏽‍♂️Tyler managed to get back to surfing form, reclaim work as a ocean guard and winning valor awards for his lifesaving work

🤙 Tyler advocates for surf therapy and speaks publicly to inspire people with stories of perseverance

🌊 "I'm a full advocate of just healing through Mother Nature, and I know that's why you and I have kept in touch...I think whether it be rock climbing or skiing or surfing, when you're just in tune with nature and you, you, you got, you get that mindset and that flow state and it's something that you become addicted to."

The full podcast shares a remarkable story of hope and the incredible power of the human spirit. Check out Tyler's website, books, and social media via the links provided to follow his journey.
