“Ketones are a cleaner fuel than sugar. The brain loves it, it’s clean, and it helps us from a cancer standpoint which is the topic of our show today.”

What Flatlining Taught Me: Will Henshall, Founder of Londonbeat Jul 21, 2021
    Show notes

This week on the SuperAge podcast, we are joined by the inspiring Will Henshall. When Will flatlined in 2018, he had a 2% chance of living, and a 1% chance of surviving without any cognitive impairment. He defied the odds and is here to share his story of how he sees the world differently now.

Songwriter, entrepreneur, inventor, photographer, audio engineer, and curious human, Will knows reinvention well. In this episode, he shares his fascinating story of working in the music industry in London where he was the founder of Londonbeat with 5 huge hits, leading a tech team in San Francisco, becoming a professional photographer, and circling back to the music industry in Los Angeles to create music that helps us focus. Will also shares exactly what he learned from flatlining for 20 minutes, essentially dying, and how he lives his life differently now. “We are the physical manifestions of spirit, we are all connected. Just like aspen trees, what you see above ground is only a part of what we are, it is the roots that connect us that are the important part."

What you will learn from this episode:

    • What flatlining taught Will about the interconnectedness of our lives
    • Why we are the first generation to be living in a new way
    • How to reinvent yourself when something isn’t working for you
    • Why community is so important to finding our purpose and staying productive
    • It’s not over until it's over

“You’ve got to lean in and be of service and then you will find that you’ll get so much back in terms of opportunities and friendship and community and the big word: Brotherhood.”

“I didn’t have a near death experience, I actually had a death experience. I flatlined for 20 minutes. And what happened was that as I recovered consciousness, I was in a coma for many, many days, my consciousness, my awareness of being in a body started to come back and it was like being in a really groggy dream.”

“Brotherhood is very, very important. We make better decisions when we know each other.”

“We are as a generation not like old people. We are stylish, in good shape, and we still have considerable amount of purchasing power and we represent well.”

Never Think About Music The Same Again: Freddie Ravel and Life In Tune Jul 14, 2021
    Show notes

“I think music is a multitasking power tool to live a better life.”

Freddie Ravel, Grammy-nominated performer working with Madonna, Prince, Santana, Earth Wind and Fire, is using music to improve human potential. At his “Life In Tune” events, he uses the basic foundation of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, and score, to go beyond traditional leadership and self-help talks by using music to tap into our emotions. Having worked with musicians like Madonna, Carlos Santana, Prince, Sergio Mendes, and more, Freddie has acquired a unique perspective of how we can use music to enhance our lives, whether we think we are “musical” or not.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • How we all have an internal rhythm that syncs to music
    • How we can use music to better fulfill the roles we play in our lives
    • How certain music can elevate our mood or relax us
    • How to drop the ego and become more musical

“I believe that every person out there has a drummer inside of them with a heart beat. I believe that we all have forms of music in us. It’s just that most of us don’t think about it that way. We kind of get lost in the echo chamber of the news or the internet.”

“Stand in front of the mirror and make a joyful noise, and don’t judge yourself!”

    Show notes

This week's SuperAge podcast episode is an encore episode with fan favorite guest, Dr. Vonda Wright. In this episode, Dr. Vonda Wright shares her insights on everything from the effects of exercise after 40, 50, and 60 to the benefits of foam rolling for recovery and performance and hormones. She wants to be healthy, active, vital, and joyful for the rest of her lifespan, and she wants to help others in doing the same by bridging the gap between their health span and lifespan. Fortunately, her research and experience as an orthopedic surgeon, speaker, and author has given her the knowledge to do just that.

“What gets me up in the morning, David, is the knowledge that by saving your mobility, I’m going to save your life because there’s not one pill besides exercise and smart nutrition that effects all the diseases that we are commonly plagued with. So that’s what gets my out of bed everyday as an orthopod and an author and a speaker.”

“We know that 68% of people do not do any kind of mobility any day of the week. And that’s why about 60% of people in this country can qualify as obese and 30% of our children are obese. And 17% of our children, that we raised, now have diabetes. We need to do something about this now.“

The Longevity Anti-Cancer Diet, You Are Not Your DNA: Dr. Donese Worden Jun 23, 2021
    Show notes

What is our current healthcare system lacking? How can we prevent and treat diseases like cancer through a holistic health approach? What are the benefits of a ketogenic diet? What labs should I have my doctor do for me to make sure I'm in good health?
Dr. Donese Worden is a holistic medicine practitioner who is bridging the gap between conventional medicine and alternative medicine by taking a holistic approach to health. Her philosophy is simple: look at the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, and create a personalized wellness plan to improve their state of being, lengthen their healthspan, and increase overall performance. Dr. Worden joins us this week to discuss her health philosophy, how she is disrupting and challenging our current healthcare system, and the top things she recommends everyone does for optimal wellbeing.

What you will learning this episode:

    • The issues with our current healthcare system, and how Dr. Worden is challenging the current model
    • The health implications from sugar
    • How the Ketogenic diet starves cancer cells and tumor growth
    • Inflammations contribution to degenerative diseases
    • The basic pillars that we all need to live better, longer
    • What spirituality means to Dr. Worden and how we can alll benefit from it

“What happened to looking at the person as a whole? It’s always connected. The knee bone is connected to the shin bone and mind, body, and spirit. If you’re not addressing all three of those, you can only put on bandaids and all you’re doing is turning off or cutting off the fire alarm and you’re leaving the fire still going. This is bad medicine.”

“Your doctors work for you. You are paying us for our medical education. We work for you and you have the right to your doctors.”

"Inflammation is the base root of most chronic degenerative diseases, David.”

“We want to live to 120 or beyond in good health, that’s the key. I don’t wait to wait until there’s a problem. I want to see what I can see and make the changes that we need to make.”

“You want to age yourself? Don’t eat well, don’t exercise, and stress.”

“It’s not about religion. It’s about feeling spiritually connected to something outside of yourself so that you don’t feel alone. You feel so safe and protected and loved no matter what.”

“I am connecting to something beyond myself when I’m composing.”

He was struggling. One day, he looked in the mirror and asked himself “What do you want to be?” His answer? “I want to be an athlete.” 18 years later, David is a motivational speaker, author, trainer, and consultant. He’s done more Iron Man races than you can count on two hands and he is just getting started. • How to cope with trauma

“You can’t be a dead hero. So you’ve got to take care of yourself first before you can take care of others.”

“Just be the best you. Don’t try to be the best them.”

“If you do take one more step, that’s further than you’ve ever pushed yourself in your life.”

“I want to be the guy that always believes that my best days are ahead of me. So if I want to be an athlete, I’m going to keep being athletic. If I want to go start a business, I’m going to do it. If I want to write more books, I’m going to do it.”

Re-Imagine The Rest Of Your Life: Chip Conley Jun 02, 2021
    Show notes

"Wisdom is not taught, it is shared.” How do we share what we have learned so that we all can grow together? To be happy at this stage of life we need purpose, wellness and community. This is the essence of the Modern Elder Academy. We ask what does education look like during midlife and beyond? How important is community for longevity? How do I build a community of likeminded people? What should I have in my life to maintain purpose? What’s the difference between our healthspan and our lifespan?

Chip Conley of The Modern Elder Academy joins us on the SuperAge podcast to discuss these questions and more. Chip discusses how he is reimagining education for those in midlife and beyond, disrupting what it means to retire, and supporting his community in Baja, Mexico through regenerative farming.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • Why we should continue to learn and grow no matter our age
    • Why community is the key to longevity, and how to build your own community of positive people
    • How to discern what in our life is no longer serving us
    • What the difference between our lifespan and our healthspan is, and why it’s important to distinguish the two
    • What 3 things we all need in our lives to maintain purpose, especially if we are considering retiring
    • How we can reimagine and disrupt education after midlife and senior living facilities

“Where’s our emotional insurance? When we have a rainy week or year in our personal life or in our work life, who are the people we can count on? And guess what man, we are really bad at this. Women are so much better.”

“I don’t think a lot of us are clear on how stuck we are because of old mindsets and old identities and old ways of being that aren’t serving us anymore.”
