The Real Truth About Keto, Fasting and Longevity: Jim Howard Oct 19, 2021
    Show notes

What is the importance of biofeedback for longevity and improved physical performance? How can we accurately measure whether we are in ketosis? What is intermittent fasting? What impact does an 18:6 diet really have on our bodies? What is autophagy? How does fasting affect muscle mass? What are exogenous ketones? What does it mean to be metabolically flexible?

With all of the conflicting information surrounding ketosis, fasting, the impact of exogenous ketones, and nutrition as a whole, we wanted to get an expert on the SuperAge podcast to give us some clarity around the topic. Jim Howard, the President and CEO of Readout Health, has helped to create an innovative biofeedback tool, Biosense, used to measure your ketone levels throughout the day to help with goals for longevity, weight management, or peak performance. He, along with this team at Readout Health, wants to help us regain control of our health through proper nutrition and lower the rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and more.

What you will learn in this episode:
    - Why using a biofeedback device can promote a better understanding of our health and be used to promote longevity
    - How to know whether you’re in ketosis
    - The misconceptions around ketosis, health, and diet
    - What intermittent fasting does for the body
    - What autophagy is and how it impacts aging
    - What Jim’s wellness non-negotiable are

“A good way to look at ketosis, I don’t mean the keto diet I’m talking about ketosis, is that it’s the other side of the metabolic switch, that’s where the damage is undone. We focus on the undoing of the damage that one has done to themselves.”

“If longevity and healthspan are curious and part of your future plans, I encourage it to be, knowing what your actual body is doing as you enter these zones is critical, as opposed to just guessing.”

“I was born in 1967 and in this one generation, in 1967 10% of us were obese. 54 years later it’s now at 40%. In one decade it will be 49%.”

The People We Have Become: Stacy London Oct 13, 2021
    Show notes

Start an entirely new venture way out of one's career experience at age 52? How audacious, but why not. Stacy shows us how to be an absolute beginner, to believe you can do it, and to thrive. Fashion editor, stylist, author, star of “What Not to Wear”, and now founder of State Of Menopause, Stacy continues to evolve and show that the only things that can hold you back are self-limiting beliefs and expectations. After going through menopause, Stacy realized how under-prepared women are for this time in their lives. She felt isolated, overwhelmed, and stuck. Now, she is determined to create a language and community for all women to feel confident and educated going into an inevitable phase in their life. She wants to talk about menopause and aging in a way that is productive and meaningful.

How are women unprepared for menopause? Why must we stop pining over who we used to be and stay present in who we are now? Why is it beneficial to have a variety of friends younger, older, and the same ages us? What do I do if I’m scared to pivot careers or try something new? How has technology changed how we live and our ability to be present? How do we let go of expectations?

“People don’t realize how much power they possess over the way they’re perceived.”

“Create a life that you don’t want to run away from.”

“As I’ve aged, my interest in style has kind of grown into an interest in wellness.”

“Why not change or pivot and do something at 52? What else should I be doing? Should I be sitting around, mourning that I don’t have the career that I had at 32? What would be the point of that? Where does the purpose lie in that?”

What you will learn in this episode:

    • How Stacy is reimagining how we approach menopause
    • Why we must stay present and stop pining over who we used to be
    • Why we should seek out a friend group of a variety of ages, older, younger, and the same as us
    • How to let go of self-limiting beliefs and try something new, no matter your age
    • How technology has changed our lives and what Stacy thinks social media will become in the future
    • Stacy and David’s life non-negotiables
    • Why letting go of expectations will change your life

Perseverance, Resilience, & Reinvention: Joan Lunden Sep 22, 2021
    Show notes

What was it like to be the co-host on Good Morning America in the 80s and 90s? How did Joan Lunden balance her booming career and being a new mother all while being on TV every morning? How did age play a role in Joan leaving GMA? What are the 3 things we need in our lives to age better? What are Joan Lunden’s health non-negotiables?

The iconic Joan Lunden joins us this week to discuss these questions. She is inspiring, humble, and curious with a tremendous amount of wisdom to offer. When Joan became the co-host for Good Morning America in 1980, she had just found out that she was pregnant. She had her child and, 7 weeks later, she was back in the co-host chair. She didn’t know it then but she was changing the TV industry and work force for women. When she left GMA after being there for 20 years, her biggest problem was learning what opportunities to say no to. She had no intention of slowing down and now at 71 years old she is still ticking things off of her to-do list.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • What the TV industry, and work force, was like for women in the 80s and 90s
    • How Joan managed being a new mother with her booming career
    • Joan’s health non-negotiables
    • The importance of cleaning your living space
    • The top 3 things we must have to age better

“Look at us! Do we look old? No we don’t. So then why do we have to be called older? Act older? Think older?”

“I literally took on my health as another job, as a second occupation, and I started working with a nutritionist and a trainer and I have really changed myself. It’s not just that I lost 35 pounds, I changed the way I lived my life, I came to understand that I needed to honor myself.”

Why Do Marriages End?: Dr. Mark Goulston Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

How can we become better listeners? Why do marriages end? What is the difference between feeling felt vs. feeling understood? What are the gender difference when it comes to emotional intimacy? How do you properly respond to your partner’s emotions? Why don’t we understand how powerful disappointment can be in our lives?

Dr. Mark Goulston, psychiatrist and author, joins us on the SuperAge podcast to share his insights on these questions. Dr. Mark Goulston dropped out of medical school twice due to depression. After a school counselor believed in him and gave him a second chance, he finished medical school and wanted pay forward what that counselor gave him for his future patients. That is exactly what he is doing with his current practice. From marriages to eating disorders to strained parent-child relationships to suicide, Dr. Goulston uses his empathetic personality and ability to listen to navigate these issues with his patients.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • How empathy and the ability to listen can help strengthen our relationships
    • Why some marriages end
    • Why strong personalities may have a more difficult time with emotionally intimate relationships, and how to overcome that
    • The power of feeling felt vs. feeling understood
    • How to respond to your partner’s emotions

“Marriages don’t end because we stop loving each other, but because we stop feeling liked by each other.”

“Alpha energy is great for success. It’s not good for closeness. You know, it’s good to have alpha energy. You can build something, you can build a business, you can grow it, you can sell it, you can do whatever, but it’s not that good for emotional intimacy.”

“One of the reasons women will say ‘Don’t give me advice or solutions’ is because when they’re sharing something, they want to just feel less alone in the feeling, they want to feel felt by you, because if they feel felt by you, their oxytocin goes up, their cortisol goes down, their blood flow goes up to their brain, and then they can give themselves the advice they need.”

Dr. Michael Roizen, the Chief Wellness Officer Emeritus at the Cleveland Clinic since 2007 and Cofounder of RealAge, joins us on the SuperAge podcast to discuss these questions. “Are there ways of turning off the aging that we have?”

“I think with an 80% probability, sometime in the next decade, we’re going to recognize that 90 can be the new 40. That is… just imagine!”

Is Instagram A Drug?: Dr. Anna Lembke Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

What is dopamine? Can social media use become an addiction? How is social media impacting our brains and ability to feel pleasure or pain? How can we break the addictive cycle of our digital devices?

Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author of the new book, “Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance In the Age of Indulgence”, joins us this week to answer these questions. She has done extensive work to study and treat a new phenomenon: social media addiction. As Dr. Lembke explains, social media use has become compulsive and addictive. It is a way to comfort ourselves by completely distracting our minds. Interestingly, by comforting and distracting ourselves with devices, we are actually causing ourselves more pain and suffering. How? Dr. Lembke shares her perspective on the topic.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • What happens in our brains when we use our devices
    • How our dependency on our devices are doing more harm than good
    • How we can break the addictive cycle
    • Why Dr. Lembke feels more connected and reachable without a smart phone

“Boredom is a really scary emotion because all of a sudden we are confronted with questions about the deeper meaning and purpose of our lives. And those are things that we need to be confronted with.”

“Instagram is a drug. It releases dopamine in the reward pathway exactly like other reinforcing addicting drugs that people have been taking.”

“What we need to do now is intentionally make our lives less convenient. Intentionally seek out painful, arduous, challenging things.”

“We’ve become so Inundated with pleasure and so insulated from pain that we hardly even know anymore what it is to experience pain and distress. And most of our suffering comes from excessive reward”

“We live in this high reward, drug-ified eco system that’s made us all vulnerable to the problem of over consumption and in some cases addiction”

Homeopathy, What Is It and How Does It Work?: Christophe Merville, D.Pharm Aug 18, 2021
    Show notes

What is homeopathy? How can homeopathy compliment or, in some cases, replace traditional pharmaceuticals? How can we use homeopathy to treat things like allergies, stress, sore muscles, and more? What about homeopathy makes it so individual and specific for each person? How can you find the right homeopathic practitioner? What are the limits of homeopathy?

Christophe Merville joins us this week on the SuperAge podcast to share his insights on homeopathy. Christophe is a pharmacist with training in homeopathy. As he explains, in France, the relationship that a pharmacist has with their patients is quite intimate when compared to how it is in the US. Pharmacists in France also incorporate homeopathy into their treatment plans. So what exactly is homeopathy? Christophe breaks it down for us in this episode.

What you will learn in this episode:

    • Homeopathy 101
    • When one might want to use homeopathic treatments instead of pharmaceuticals
    • Why the dosages of homeopathic treatments are as low as they are
    • How to find the right practitioner for you
    • The limits of homeopathy

“In France, homeopathy is very much integrated in medical practice.”

“We are in a culture, especially in the US, where more is better.”

“Homeopathy works fast. When you find that right medicine, it will work fast.”

“Know your limits and know when to ask for help.”
