Ep. 976: Running Across Montana - Rebecca Boylan Oct 23, 2023
    Show notes

Ultra running across Montana: Becca Boylan's 475-mile journey to raise awareness for her mother's Acute Myeloid Leukemia battle – metabolizing grief through running, inspiring resilience, and proving we hold the strength for life's toughest challenges.

Becca Boylan, a fifth generation Montanan, recently completed a 475 miles run across her home state to share the story of her mother's fight against Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The inspiration for the run came after Becca's experience helping her mother fight the disease for the past year and using running as a way to "metabolize" the emotions she was going through.

Through the metaphor of running, Becca, the oldest of six kids, hoped to show others that we are capable of far more than we think possible and we hold the strength we need to face any of life's challenges, whether it's a cancer diagnosis or a mountain marathon.

    Ep. 972: A Fine Line - Graham Zimmerman Oct 09, 2023
    Show notes

Mountaineering: Graham Zimmerman's Book A Fine Line – Remote Peaks, Climbing Joy vs Dark Side, Lost Friends, Climate Change Impact, and Life Balance Memoir. Graham has been climbing mountains for most of his life. He’s been to some of the farthest reaches on our planet and experienced some of the most remote peaks one is able to summit.

He recently wrote a book about his life and countless adventures, A Fine Line; Searching for Balance Among Mountains. In this engaging and provocative coming of age memoir, Zimmerman maintains a delicate balancing act: appreciating the joy that climbing brings him while recognizing that the sport has a darker side.

With thoughtful introspection, A Fine Line blends tales of mountain adventures with stories of memorials for friends killed in climbing accidents and firsthand experience of the effects of climate change.

This first episode is an interview with a legendary Florida rancher that has committed his time and effort to protecting as much of Florida as possibl

Read more about the first episode below and listen here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/florida-uncut/id1707970349

    Show Notes from Florida Uncut:

On the inaugural episode of Florida Uncut, we sit down with the legendary Florida cowboy, Jim Strickland, to talk about the intersection of ranching and conservation. The talk, which took place in a cabin on Blackbeard’s Ranch in Myakka City, FL, which Jim manages, is a mix of personal history and education on conservation topics.

Jim claims to be a simple sixth-generation Florida cowboy, but his sharp communication skills and ability to get things done has been instrumental in the thousands of acres of land he’s helped protect with the Florida Conservation Group, which he is the vice-chair of, as well as the army of folks he’s been able to mobilize and motivate through the years to help join his cause of protecting what’s left of wild Florida.

Ep. 971: The Life of Climbing Icon Royal Robbins - David Smart Oct 02, 2023
    Show notes

Climbing: David Smart's Royal Robbins Biography – Yosemite Golden Age, Clean Climbing Ethos, Dirtdag Roots, Rivalries with Chouinard/Harding, and Legacy as Conscience of Rock Climbing. "Royal Robbins had an outsized impact on climbing history. This great new biography by David Smart brings the man behind the famous climbs to life in a way that’s both relatable and inspiring."--Alex Honnold

Acclaimed writer David Smart illuminates the fascinating life of Royal Robbins---in all its soulful ambition, rivalry, and romance. Royal Robbins chronicles his early years growing up as a latchkey kid in Southern California, the push and pull between being an aspiring banker or one of the original Camp 4 dirtbags, and his later decades as a father, husband, kayaker, and the trailblazing founder of the outdoor apparel company that bears his name. This intimate, colorful tour of climbing history covering Yosemite, the Tetons, the Gunks, the Alps, the United Kingdom, and more from the 1960s onward features star characters such as Liz Robbins-- Robbins’s wife and a pioneering adventurer in her own right-- Yvon Chouinard, John Harlin, Steve Roper, Warren Harding, Tom Frost, and Doug Tompkins.

An important addition to our knowledge of the Golden Age of rock climbing in Yosemite and the development of the clean climbing ethos, Royal Robbins sheds new light on an elemental figure of outdoor culture.

Robbins’s passing in 2017 was covered from the BBC News to NPR to the New York Times, which deemed him the "conscience of rock climbers"

Bonus: The Fall and Rise of the Buffalo - Travel South Dakota Stories Podcast Sep 22, 2023
    Show notes

If you like Adventure Sports Podcast, then you'll love the Travel South Dakota Stories podcast. You can find their episodes anywhere you get podcasts. Today we're featuring The Fall and Rise of the Buffalo.

Feel the ground rumble and the dust fly as sixty cowboys and cowgirls saddle up to bring in a thundering herd of 1,300 buffalo at the 57th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. But we’re not just watching it, we are in the thick of it as we get thrown around on the back of a truck chasing the herd across the wide-open plains. Listen to one of the riders Molly as she cracks her whip and corals the galloping beasts.

We also meet Lakota rider and manager of Bear Butte State Park, Jim Jandreau, who tells us what the buffalo means to the Lakota people.

At the end of the long and tiring ride we join Molly’s 87-year-old dad, who had just taken part in his 53rd roundup.

Along the way we discover that although the roundup harks back to a different time, the adventurous spirit of South Dakotans that has been a way of life for centuries still lives on. And that spirit is infectious.

“You’re experiencing what you see on TV and the old western movies, the buffalo roaming across the prairie like that. It's that old west tradition that you don't see anywhere else in the world.” – Matt Snyder, Superintendent of Custer State Park

More info about the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup can be found at travelsouthdakota.com.
