    Adult Onset Horsemanship

An informal and candid podcast discussing real world horsemanship with respected and experienced experts. Daniel is a guy who is good with horses. He has a background in cutting where he was predominantly involved in developing aged event horses and started over 1000 head of colts, many of whom went on to win lots of cash. A very bad horse wreck at a horse show, involving his niece, prompted him to begin working with people and showing them a no BS version of how to not get killed by their horses. He’s since worked with thousands more horses and people from varying disciplines and breeds including many last chance problem horses. In addition to his general horsemanship knowledge he is an internationally known expert on bits and how and why they function. He has a well rounded knowledge base of horsemanship and is working hard at his communication skills with his own species. His wife is a firm believer that he really likes the sound of his own voice and that is the real reason he’s started this podcast. http://dauphinhorsemanship.com/

Ep. 59 Ben Longwell, True West Horsemanship Oct 21, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Ben Longwell trains horses in the vaquero tradition. His business name is True West Horsemanship. He lived for 11 years in New Zealand, where his wife is from. They moved back to Oregon a couple of years ago with their 4 children. Ben's well experienced at doing clinics and presentations. He's also got a podcast of his own, "Life In The Saddle."
I've talked with a couple of vaquero and Californio types on the podcast before. Still, I found Ben's views refreshing and we get into the hackamore, in particular, in some depth. Ben and his family do some long clinics at his place where they take you out into the land and work cattle. He'll help you to use the cattle and the land to further your horse's training and handiness, and your relationship with them.
I also like how these long form conversations allow for revelations of the person behind the public figure. Ben will talk about his time with a para-military unit, and touches on performing musical acts with his family. There's a million roads that lead to the horse world and Ben's is unique and interesting.

Ep. 58 Kerri Lake, Generation of Harmony Oct 14, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Kerri Lake, whose business is Generation of Harmony, is all about Being Human Differently. She teaches interspecies consciousness and human evolution. Her primary vehicle for awakening and personal evolution in this life has been relationships - with family, with animals, with partners, with Creator Consciousness and within herself. Her immediate family has been the greatest catalyst of her journey, a perpetual reminder to stay awake, embody love and always continue to awaken to Creator Consciousness.
If you know Kerri Lake and me, you might think a conversation between us would be oil and water. Admittedly, I wasn't exactly sure how this one was going to go myself. On the aftermath side of things, this is definitely one of the my favorite podcast episodes to date.
Kerri is about as Woo Woo as that pendulum goes and I'm about as far the other way as things get. Yet we found a lot of common ground, made space for each other's thoughts, and disected a lot of ideas and pre-conceived notions. I'm now a lot more on the thought process that it's a circle and not a pendulum.
I met Kerri in person at Jim Masterson's Gathering last January and we had a very nice fireside chat one evening. Her intelligence, genuine interest in people, and rapport building skills were evident. I listened to her presentation and it inspired a lot of thoughts and ideas. People who inspire thoughts and ideas are exactly the type that I want to talk to and I hope the curiosity and pleasure of this conversation comes through.
She has a variety of online courses, both guided/inter-active, and self-study. She's written two books:
"Listen Like a Horse: Relationships Without Dominance"
    "Spiritually Gifted: An Auto-Biography"
She also produces and hosts the podcast "Compass Conversations" where she brings in a group of 6 people to have an organic conversation on an unknown topic. You can look for me on a future episode.

Ep. 57 Noche Miller, Horse and Cow Tricks, R+ Training, and Equine Swirls/Whorls Oct 07, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Mrs. Noche Miller thought that I wasn't giving positive reinforcement training and trick training their just due, so she wanted to come on and offer her perspective. She trains horses and cows to do tricks, owns a Guiness World Record for most tricks performed by a cow in one minute (video in the links) and has written a book and runs a large facebook group on reading horse swirls/whorls. Noche is also a contributor to Horse Tricks 101, a website and facebook group that help people interested in Positive Reinforcement Training to get started.
We talk about her background, and Rusty, the spoiled rescue Morgan gelding that started her on the R+ journey. Noche and I talk about the ins and outs of R+ training. I ask her about some of the claims vs the realities. She talks about the safest ways to go about feeding treats so you don't create a monster. We get into how she got bored and began teaching tricks to cows in her herd and practical things that cattle owners can do to work their cattle with less stress using R+. She also tells the tale about her Guiness World Record for "Most Tricks Performed by a Cow in One Minute."
Lastly, we talk about whorls in horses. I'm a very public skeptic on this topic. She's got quite a following when it comes to her whorl reading. I do challenge her on this and hope I don't get too much hate mail for it, but she handles herself well. Join us for a nice chat and listen to two adults who disagree and discuss respectfully, as it should be.

Ep. 56 Will Friday, Performance Equine Bodywork Sep 30, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Will Friday is both a Masterson Method Practitioner and nutrition advisor for Legacy Equine. We met at Jim Masterson's Gathering last January and I thought he'd make a good guest.
We get into his past career in the outdoor industry and that he's only been doing the horse thing for about 15 years now. I think it's encouraging for a lot of you to see and listen to people who are successful in the horse business who aren't 7th generation of their family business. Will started Performance Equine Bodywork in California and has grown it into a successful business that helps a lot of people and horses.
Will has gone up through the levels of the Masterson Method to be an instructor who teaches courses. He's also gotten into equine nutrition in the last few years and added consulting to his business. We get into all of that and some good stories he's been through along the way.
Will was also instrumental in founding the veterans job training and life skills group, Equine Empowered Therapy. They use horses to teach and help veterans get jobs in the horse business.

    Ep. 55 September '24 Q&A Sep 23, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

It's just me this time answering your questions. I hope that's enough, but I'm open to feedback here. If you want more Q&A's, let me know. If you just want interviews, let me know that too.
In this episode I touch on the topic of tongue sensitivity that I heard a bit fitter discuss on another podcast. I took exception to one particular thing she said and wanted to set the record straight on what I consider a pretty important thing to understand. Next, I talk about mechanical hackamores. What's the deal with those things? Then we talk about the notion that the wild natural horse is a problem and pain free animal that we should all aspire to have our horses be like, or not. Then I get onto an often asked question about how to know who to follow and learn from. What are the red and green flags of public teaching horsemen and horsewomen? Then another topic of the day comes up, as I offer my thoughts on what the average amateur horse owner can do about the state of the industry, allegations of abuse, and how to handle those difficult subjects if you're wanting to help steward this horse world as a non-professional. Lastly, I talk about some of the offerings that we have within my business, Dauphin Horsemanship, to help you on your journey. I'm fairly often hit with the statement, "I had no idea you did that" and so here's my attempt at letting all of you know all that we can do to help.
As I state in the podcast, if you are interested in helping out the podcast, me and my business, or the horse world in general, please share our content and recommend it to your peers and friends, unless one of those is really close to beating you just now. Then wait until the next year starts. We also have merch on our website now, so you can style around in a logo'd hoodie, long sleeve t-shirt, coffee mug, Daniel Dauphin underwear with my face on your bum, and on and on and on.

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Dr. Shelley Appleton has a PhD in Human Learning, is a pharmacist, and horse trainer/clinician in Australia. She uses her understanding in how humans learn to show them better ways to get along with their horses.
This episode is destined to go down as one of the best ones we've done. We get deep into the ethics, some of today's issues in the industry, and better ways to approach the customer base for best results.
Dr. Shelley also has a podcast, along with her co-host Kathryn Christieson, where they bring in guests and ask them questions from their standard list of 20. This is where I first learned of Dr. Shelley and I recommend you check it out.

Ep. 53 Mike and Christine Stokley, Big Creek Livestock Sep 09, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Mike and Christine Stokley own Big Creek Livestock near Lexington, Ky. They stand the stallion Pepto Shine, have a small broodmare band, give lessons and clinics, and raise commercial cattle. I met them a couple of years ago and appreciated their knowledge and obvious experience during a cattle working mini-clinic and demo. The thing that struck me most about them, though, was how well they worked together and how they were very respectful of one another while co-teaching.
MIke has a background in rodeo and Christine has been learning horsemanship at the feet of the masters like Ray Hunt for most of her life. Their situation and abilities are unique and pretty cool. I hope you enjoy the conversation and get a few laughs out of it like I did,

This is a long awaited episode! Leslie is someone that I truly get a kick out of. Her mind is very intelligent and complex. She's the author of one of the best horse books ever written, "True Horsemanship Through Feel", which she lovingly refers to as "Bill's Book". Leslie does have a benefit clinic coming up very soon, (late Sept and early Oct.) in Colorado. The host has been sick and the clinic hasn't been promoted much at all, so feel free to get in touch with them and get signed up!
I have actually had 3 different interviews with Leslie over the years and each time has been plagued with tech issues. Please enjoy this latest interview that made it through editing in tact. There were some connection issues and I lost her mid sentence dozens of times, so this is heavily edited and I hope it comes across in a manner that does justice to Leslie's ideas.

Ep. 51 Carl Bledsoe, Owner of Just Gait, Gaited Horse Clinician and Animal Welfare Advocate Aug 26, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

If you have any questions about gaited horses, soring, what gaited horses are all about, why they gait, what the difference gaits are, etc. this one will be right up your alley. Carl and his wife Tammy own Just Gait and travel around teaching a better way to handle gaited horses. Carl was awarded the 2022 Humane Horseman of the Year.
Contrary to what many gaited trainers practice, they can be soft. There's no need for long shanked bits with bracing, or any of the things that the gaited horse world draws fire for constantly. These horses have brains and can be trained, and rather easily too.
I really enjoyed talking with Carl and I think you'll find that he's honest to a flaw. There's no topic that he shies away from and he's as genuine as they come.

Ep. 50 Patrick King Horsemanship and Dressage Aug 19, 2024
    Show notes

Let us know how we're doing. Please understand that we can't reply or see your info.

Patrick King is our first guest to come back and be on the podcast for a second time. He's a Classical Dressage clinician and trainer who also has a background in the more foundational type of horsemanship taught by one of his early mentors, Ray Hunt.
Patrick and I talk horses, but a big chunck of this episode goes into the recent controversy of Olympian and recently embattled Dressage Rider, Charlotte Dujardin. Having conversations about abuse and things that need to improve within our industry is very difficult to do. I play the devil's advocate in several places throughout this one and I hope that it's apparent what we are trying to get at. Yes, there are still things that are occuring that need to stop or be improved. Some of those things are a lot more obvious than others. Many common practices that people do routinely, believing that they are doing what's "best for the horse" could similarly be looked at as abuse, as many of us, and research backs that those practices certainly aren't what's "best for the horse". We take a look at some standards, and I'll flatly state that Patrick and I do not see completely eye to eye on all of this stuff.
This is a respectful conversation between two people who have decades in this industry and the big picture in mind. I think these types of conversations, even if they don't immediately lead to agreement, are incredibly important and exactly what we need to be doing if we expect to still have a horse industry 20 years from now.
