030. Serpent and Dove: I'm wonderful, appreciate me now! Jul 19, 2021

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: Serpent and Dove

The experiment begins! Building off last week’s audio/traditional reading episode, Jessica Marie is reading a physical copy of Serpent and Dove and Laura Marie is listening to the audiobook to see if they come to the same conclusions about the story. It's magic, witches, the Church, stuffy men and glorious women. All the elements are there to make this a fantastic read, but is it?
Mentions: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Outlander (tv series), Throne of Glass, The Originals, Rick and Morty

Trigger Warnings: the patriarchy and treatment towards women

ACOFAE Podcast presents: a discussion surrounding audiobooks and traditional reading

Laura Marie and Jessica Marie FIRMLY believe that all reading is valid and that whatever format you use to consume a book is perfectly wonderful. However, there are people out there that say that listening to an audiobook doesn't count. Oh, the drama. In this episode passions are running HIGH. Conversations about ableism and ageism are had and points are made that might make you step back and go "huh I never thought about it like that".
Don't tell Laura Marie's grandma that she wasn't reading. She'd have slapped you.
Rest in Peace, Anthony Bourdain.

Spoilers: No spoilers. Book mentions include The Cruel Prince , Throne of Glass , Legendborn
Author Mentions include: Sarah J. Maas, Jennifer L. Armentrout and Scarlett St. Clair

Trigger Warnings: Discussions surrounding ableism and classism

028. The Shadow Wand: "Hide your power? 'No!' Believe in lies about yourself? 'NO!' The last 'no' comes out in a roar." Jul 05, 2021

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: The Shadow Wand

There is so much to say. Dragons. Assassins. Mind control. Magic. Training montage. Learning to love and accept yourself and others. Working through trauma and grief. And Laura Marie and Jessica Marie's favorite thing: awareness of the bigger picture. Book 3 of The Black Witch Chronicles has all of this and more and it is wonderful. They're worked up and talking fast about Elloren and her journey, everyone else’s journey, and there's a little mild speculation about book 4 out December 2021.
Again, if you aren't ready to FIGHT then you are part of the problem!
Laura Marie says Aislynn but it should be Sage- you'll know where

Spoilers: No major spoilers, but mentions of ACOSF, The Cruel Prince, From Blood and Ash, Six of Crows, Game of Thrones, ACOTAR, Heir of Fire

Not an easy read but a necessary one, The Iron Flower picks up right where The Black Witch left off and instantly puts you in the center of the action. And there is A LOT of action. 026. Priory of the Orange Tree: And my jaw was on the floor. Jun 21, 2021

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: Priory of the Orange Tree

A long episode for a long book.
This is Jessica Marie's first high fantasy book and a reread for Laura Marie and both still have questions.
Priory of the Orange Tree is as beautiful as it is complex and it is indeed complex. Full of dragons, religion, pirates, mages, and Queens this book demands you sit down and pay attention. Definitely something that will be read again and again Priory has kicked open the door to high fantasy and Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are happily walking through it.

There are no spoilers outside of Priory of the Orange Tree.

025. The Black Witch: Real education doesn't make your life easy. Jun 14, 2021

Show notes

ACOFAE Podcast presents: The Black Witch

This one is heavy.
A book and series that no one really talks about anymore, The Black Witch is full of concepts and ideas that will make you feel a certain way. The story of a sheltered girl, an oppressive society, untapped power, and shifting world views create an oppressive setting where being different is a crime and thinking outside the box is treason. If you're not screaming to join the fight at the end of this, we aren't friends.

Spoilers: light mentions of the Grishaverse
TW: sexual assault, physical violence, racism
