In 2016 the American Academy of Pediatrics began using the term after releasing a policy statement about an infant who experience a “Brief Resolved Unexplained Event”. It refers to infants under 12 months of age who, according to the parent, had an event such as a loss of tone, stiffening, an apneic episode or loss of consciousness for no apparent reason. What’s different in this new policy statement? Who’s high-risk, who’s low-risk, who needs to be worked up and admitted and who can go home?
