The Handmaid's Tale - Interview with Director David Lester Mar 31, 2025

Show notes

Today we had the incredible pleasure of speaking with David Lester, who is many things on The Handmaid’s Tale, but most recently, the Director of Season 6, Episode 3.David has been with the show since Season 1, and has worn far too many hats to count, but we do our best to follow his route from 3rd AD of the first season to Director of Ep 3 of the final season, as he regales us with so many funny and fascinating tales along the way. When we conducted this interview in October, we had of course not seen his episode yet, but we have since and it’s incredible. As such, he has promised us he will come back for another interview after Season 6 is done and we intend to call him on it. In the meantime we know you will enjoy hearing from such a beloved and seasoned member of The Handmaid’s Tale crew.

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

And since you enjoy David’s work so much, be sure to take a look at all the other shows in which you can see his work on IMDb! And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage

The Handmaid's Tale - Interview with Yvonne Strahovski Mar 27, 2025

Show notes

Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Yvonne Strahovski, a woman who needs no introduction!

But just for good measure, Yvonne plays Serena Joy Waterford in all six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale to date and absolutely crushes the nuances of playing a woman who does horrible things but somehow manages to pull the audience (and June) in and make you care about her time and again. Yvonne is simply brilliant in this role (and of course all the others she’s played along the years, from Dexter to the more recent Teacup and so many in between). We hope you enjoy our little chat as much as we did!

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

The Handmaid's Tale - Interview with Graphic Designer Sean Scoffield Mar 24, 2025

Show notes

Today we had the great pleasure of speaking with Sean Scoffield, Graphic Designer on The Handmaid’s Tale.

Sean is the one of the primary masterminds behind the entire written language of Gilead, which is no small feat. In this unique dystopian society, Sean had the challenge of creating store fronts, store interiors, road signs and so much more without using a single word, because the handmaids aren’t allowed to read. He also designs the many logos of Gilead from the Eyes to Birthmobiles to Gilead’s recent fertility center in Season 5. But maybe our favorite graphic design project was the picture itinerary Serena was handed when she visited Toronto in Season 2. Once again, there is so much work that goes into the brilliant details that make this show what it is, and we learned about yet another fascinating job in that world today!

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

And since you enjoy Sean’s work so much, be sure to take alook at all the other shows in which you can see his work on his IMDB! And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage

The Handmaid's Tale - Interview with Max Minghella Mar 20, 2025

Show notes

Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Max Minghella, fan favorite of our listeners!

Max plays Nick Blaine on The Handmaid's Tale, and is another character that's been on the show since Day One. Starting out as the Waterford driver, Nick quickly falls in love with June and they can't seem to quit each other to this day, despite his ascension to Commander and her escape to Canada. So of course we talk all things Nick & June and Nick & Lawrence, his other prominent (B)romance. We also spun off into completely unrelated topics like VCRs and the WWE! We had a great time just chatting with him in our trailer on set in October, and we hope you all enjoy the interview as much as we did.

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

And since you enjoy Max’s work so much, be on the lookout later this year for the release of his movie, "Shell," which incidentally also stars Elisabeth Moss, and many other well loved names. And keep an eye out next year for his new role in Season 4 of "Industry," which he's filming now. In the meantime, check out his IMDb to keep you busy until those come out! Show notes

Today, we continue our On Set Interview Series by speaking with Glenn Hughes, Picture Car Coordinator on The Handmaid’s Tale! Once again, the show has found us an incredible human being with such a cool job for a new friend.

You see cars everywhere on screen, and they set the scene instantly so you know what decade you're working with - or in this case, that you're in a whole new, and wholly terrifying, dystopian society. But have you ever though about where and how they source an entire show's worth of cars? Glenn tells us all about that and so much more - we guarantee you'll be paying a lot more attention to these scene setting (and sometimes stealing) automobiles after this interview. In addition to all the Handmaid's cars (and a plane!), we discussed Stephen King's infamous Christine, Glenn's own recent purchase of his dream car, mani-pedis, and much much more. We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did!!

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

The Handmaid's Tale - Interview with Josh Charles Mar 13, 2025

Show notes

Today, we have the hilarious and unforgettable honor of chatting with Josh Charles, new to The Handmaid's Tale for Season 6!

Since Josh is brand new to The Handmaid's Tale this upcoming season, and we want to avoid any Season 6 spoilers, we don't delve into the specifics of his new character. Fear not though friends, as there is so much entertainment in his incredible career to date, spanning nearly 40 years of hits on screen - ranging all the way from 1989's Dead Poet's Society to Taylor Swift's 2024 music video for Fortnight. Not to mention his role as Max Peterson in Elisabeth Moss' latest spy thriller, The Veil. This conversation was had in a trailer on the set of The Handmaid's Tale in October and was the most fun and random free-for-all in which we have ever had the pleasure of participating. We hope you enjoy it a fraaaction as much as we did!

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

And since you enjoy Josh’s work so much, be sure to check him out in other shows such as Dead Poet's Society, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (how did we forget to talk about that childhood classic!), Drunk History, Sports Night, The Good Wife, The Veil and so many more. Take a look at his IMDB page to see them all!And please come find us on Instagram if you haven't yet @tht_abovethegarage

Show notes

Today, we continue our On Set Interview Series by speaking with John MacGillivray, Special Effects Coordinator on The Handmaid’s Tale! We went into this interview excited to hear the details behind all the explosions and fires and bombings in The Handmaid's Tale but ended up learning so much more. Special effects is all that, yes, but it's also creating the atmosphere in the colonies, the snow and rain and fog on screen, and just so many more important details that give the show the look and feel it's so famous for. John is the friendliest, most fascinating, and talented man (with yet another incredibly cool job), and we hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did!

And since you enjoy John’s work so much, be sure to check out his IMDB page to see all the other shows he blows stuff up in!

The Handmaid's Tale - Interview with Amanda Brugel aka Rita Blue Mar 06, 2025

Show notes

Today, we have the incredible honor of chatting with Amanda Brugel, who plays Rita Blue - one of the very first characters we fell in love with on The Handmaid’s Tale, all the way back in the pilot episode.

Sarcastic, sassy, stoic - yet also soft-hearted beneath it all - Amanda plays Rita with such depth, a paragraph will certainly not do her performance justice. Neither will half an hour - but we were just so honored Amanda took that time to share with us her beautiful personal experience with Rita. An experience that, incredibly, goes back much farther than the past ten years of making this show! Truly this was one of the most moving interviews we’ve ever conducted. If you're a Handmaid's fan, we know you’ll enjoy her story as much as we did.

This episode will include spoilers for new viewers as we discuss the show to date, which is through Season 5, Episode 10.

And since you enjoy Amanda’s work so much, be sure to check her out in other shows such as Dark Matter, Pretty Hard Cases, Kim's Convenience, and many many more - take a look at her IMDB page to see them all!
