    "D4910 & D4341 vs. D4342" Fast Facts: Coding Edition Feb 21, 2022
    Show notes

On this week's episode of Fast Facts – Coding Edition with Teresa Duncan, MS Teresa gives us a breakdown of codes D4910 & D4341 vs. D4342. Teresa highlights what factors need to be present in order to use these codes and some of the common mistakes she sees that lead to unpaid claims.

    Quotes:

"So when I talk about the scaling and root planing codes, I'm really talking about those two codes, and it does depend on how many teeth that you have involved in the procedure."

"One thing that I'd like to point out is we do talk about the tissue being contaminated with toxins and microorganisms, and I'm just going to challenge you. Is that something that you discuss with your patients? And if not, why not?"

"A good rule of thumb is to make sure that your probing and your radiographs are all within one year and that way you should have really current information and that just helps you also with your conversations with the patient."

    Quotes

"I often get asked what age it makes sense to start talking to the patient themselves."

"Until that child is an adult, you are going to need to have a conversation with the parent, that isn't to say that you can't involve the patient in conversations about their oral health."

"Teaching kids that they have a voice in their healthcare as they get older is important."

"If you can have that conversation with the child, have that conversation, it does something for the child, and for the parent."

"People tend to be pretty thoughtful from an early age, we need to give them credit for that."

"I don't want to drive a wedge between the patient and the parent either."

"It's really important to offer parents options, even if the other option is to do nothing."

"When we are presented with options we tend to want to choose the option that is best for us."

"It saves me so much time in the long run to have those meaningful conversations, and builds up my own personal satisfaction and fights burnout in my job."
