    Show notes

In this episode, Sherri and Chelsi are joined by their friends, and talented long-arm quilters, Marion Bott and Val Krueger. They each share how they initially were introduced to quilting and how they eventually got into long-arm quilting. They explain the difference between custom and edge-to-edge quilting, and when it might be best to use custom instead of edge-to-edge. They also discuss how they each choose the designs they do when given a quilt. Other topics discussed include thread colors, advice on how to help prep your quilt before handing it off to a long-arm quilter, and advice for someone thinking about getting into long-arm quilting. Jenny's Bio:
Jenny Doan is the smiling face of Missouri Star Quilt Company. Stitching together simplified quilts full of love and laughter, she makes quilting easier, more accessible, and friendlier than ever before. Watching her tutorials feels like coming home again. With over 750,000 YouTube subscribers and more than 230 million views to date, Jenny has sparked enthusiasm for quilting and warmed her viewer’s hearts across the globe.
When she moved with her growing family to Missouri over 20 years ago, she never imagined that someday they’d have a successful quilting business. Like many small towns across America, employment was scarce, so in November 2008, on a modest budget, the Doan family bought a building in Hamilton and started Missouri Star Quilt Company. At first they offered basic quilting supplies and machine quilting services, but business picked up when they started posting videos of Jenny teaching quilting tutorials online. From that time on her life changed forever.
Almost 13 years later, Jenny now teaches quilting tutorials on YouTube once a week and continues to share her story everywhere she goes. It’s a labor of love and a dream come true for her. Hamilton, Missouri, has become a quilter’s paradise, attracting visitors from around the world. With the help of Jenny’s husband, Ron, her seven children, and 25 grandchildren, this family business has grown to include an entire community.

Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories Information
Quilts and coverlets, used in North America since the 17th century, have a unique capacity to tell stories. Their tactile making by hand and their traditional use in the home impart deeply personal narratives of their creators, and the many histories they express reveal a complex record of America. Upending expectations about quilt displays—traditionally organized by region, form or motif—Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories is a loosely chronological presentation that is divided into seven thematic sections and incorporates the perspectives of artists, educators, academics and activists.
More than 50 works on view include remarkable examples by an under-recognized diversity of artistic hands and minds from the 17th century to today, including female and male, known and unidentified, urban and rural makers; immigrants; and Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian and LGBTQ+ Americans. Standouts include Pictorial Quilt (1895–98), an icon of the MFA’s collection and one of only two known surviving quilts by Harriet Powers, an exceptional artist and storyteller born into slavery in 1837, and the recently acquired To God and Truth (2019), a vibrantly colorful and elaborately patterned work by contemporary artist Bisa Butler. While celebrating the artistry and intricacy of quilts and coverlets and the lives they document, the exhibition also invites visitors to consider the complicated legacies ingrained in the fabric of American life.
