This week at MTPR we’re celebrating music and stories from 1971 to commemorate 50 years of National Public Radio. To celebrate this history, we’re joined today by UM College of Arts and Media professor Jeff Brandt.
Perhaps best known for teaching UM’s most popular class, The History of Rock and Roll, Jeff lays down why 1971 was a pivotal year for the music industry and its reverb felt throughout America’s cultural & political spheres.

Today's guest is Brendan Leonard, the man behind SEMI-RAD and other creative pursuits. I started following Brendan’s SEMI-RAD feed on Instagram several years ago. It has a playful sensibility and an uncanny knack for making you consider the ordinary or obvious from a different perspective. Brendan is also the author of several books, including my personal favorite "Bears Don't Care About Your Problems."

Today's guests are Dr. Cathy Whitlock, Regents Professor of Paleoecology at Montana State University, and Dr. Steven Hostetler, Hydrologist at the Northern Rocky Mountains Science Center of the US Geological Survey.
These two are the lead authors of the recently published Greater Yellowstone Area Climate Assessment. The front matter of the assessment perhaps says it best: "The Greater Yellowstone Climate Assessment draws on the best-available science to provide a basis for understanding the consequences of climate change in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA). Compared to both distant and recent past, temperatures are increasing, snowfall is decreasing, and peak stream flow is occurring earlier. These climate trends are projected to continue and accelerate in the future."

Today's guest is Dierdre Wolownick. What first captures many people’s attention is the fact that Dierdre is mother to world-renowned climber, Alex Honnold, but that just scratches the surface of this woman’s story. She’s a mother to two athletic and activist children, a teacher, a writer, an artist, a conductor, a runner and a climber, to name but a few of her many identities. Dierdre’s book, The Sharp End of Life, is a wonderful account of a life lived being lived to its fullest, and perhaps accelerating in vigor with age.
