Types of AI: Narrow AI vs. General AI vs. Superintelligent AI Jul 22, 2023
    Show notes

🤖 AI CAN BEAT HUMANS. SO WHY IS IT STILL SO STUPID?

Artificial intelligence can beat world champions, recognize faces, write text and process enormous amounts of information. But does that make it genuinely intelligent?

In this episode of A Beginner’s Guide to AI, we explore the crucial difference between Narrow AI, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), three concepts that describe radically different levels of machine capability.

We start with the AI already surrounding us. Narrow AI, also known as Artificial Narrow Intelligence or ANI, can perform specific tasks extremely well, sometimes far better than humans. Siri, Alexa, recommendation systems, IBM Watson and AlphaGo reveal a fascinating paradox: an AI can demonstrate extraordinary performance without possessing human-like general intelligence.

    Then we move toward AGI.

Artificial General Intelligence would not simply master one predefined task. It would be able to learn, reason, adapt and apply knowledge across different situations. And beyond AGI lies an even more radical possibility: Artificial Superintelligence, an AI whose cognitive capabilities could surpass our own.

And because AI terminology can get abstract very quickly, there is cake. 🍰

Our Great AI Bake Off turns Narrow AI, AGI and ASI into three very different kinds of bakers, from the specialist capable of producing one perfect cake to an intelligence capable of reinventing the entire culinary world.

    🎯 IN THIS EPISODE:

🤖 What Narrow AI actually means

🧠 The difference between Narrow AI and AGI

🚀 How AGI differs from Artificial Superintelligence

🏆 Why Watson and AlphaGo could defeat elite humans without becoming generally intelligent

    💬 QUOTES FROM THE EPISODE

“Narrow doesn’t mean daft. It just means specialized.”

“Watson was still very much narrow AI: brilliant but limited.”

“Even at their most impressive, today’s AI systems remain specialized.”

    Show notes

🤖 WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, REALLY?

We hear about AI constantly, from ChatGPT and recommendation algorithms to self-driving cars and medical diagnostics. But what is artificial intelligence actually doing underneath the surface?

In this episode of Beginner's Guide to AI, Prof. GePhardT takes us back to the foundations. From Alan Turing's famous question about whether machines can think, through the birth of artificial intelligence, the AI winters and the rise of machine learning, neural networks and deep learning, this is a practical introduction to how AI actually works.

    YOU'LL LEARN

🧠 What is the difference between AI, machine learning and deep learning?

🎯 How do supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning work?

🎂 What can baking a cake teach us about machine learning?

♟️ Why was DeepMind's AlphaGo victory over Lee Sedol such an important moment?

🏥 How is AI already changing healthcare, transportation and digital marketing?

⚖️ And what happens when increasingly powerful AI systems raise questions about privacy, bias, transparency and accountability?

Whether you're completely new to artificial intelligence or want to understand the fundamentals behind today's AI revolution, this episode gives you the foundation.
