    501(c)3(b)(s): Deprogramming for Organizational Growth

In “nonprofit” 501c3 organizations the 80/20 rule applies. 80% of all funding goes to 20% of the sector. This happens because much of conventional wisdom in our industry is false. In this podcast, you will find the truths, And those truths will set you free to success. Zoot Velasco is an employee of OCEAA and California State University Fullerton. The views expressed on this podcast are his alone and do not represent the views of OCEAA or California State University Fullerton.

    59-Care & Feeding of Interns (Rebroadcast) Jun 16, 2020
    Show notes

There is much BS around the use of interns: "They are a waste of time," "They are there to get coffee," "They are hard to get," "They are hard to keep." In my position as CEO of a cultural center, we hosted about 60 interns each year which did a great deal of work on our behalf. Of our 17 staff positions, 15 were eventually filled by former volunteer interns.

Today we are talking with Robert Pierce and Andrew Gonzalez of the Center for Internships & Community Engagement at California State University Fullerton. Together we are going to clear up the myths around internships.

    58: Innovation (Rebroadcast) Jun 06, 2020
    Show notes

Episode 58 (Rebroadcast): What is innovation that transforms organizations? Peter Drucker defined innovation as "change that creates a new dimension of performance." But how does one do that? It is not what most people think it is. It is not some creative new thought and some wild idea that just happens to work. It is not thinking outside the box. It is eliminating the box, using the scientific method on a small scale to find what works, and then scaling it up. Zoot and the Gianneschi Center are in the middle of a research project on real innovation in small organizations. The G3X Conference this year is centered on the idea of innovation. Zoot discusses true innovation from his research and his own experience growing an organization 400% during the recession.

51-G3X-AB5: How The New Law Is Changing Staff for The Social Sector Apr 15, 2020
    Show notes

Episode 51: Today we are broadcasting our G3X Zoom workshop on AB5 hosted on April 14, 2020 by Zoot Velasco of the Gianneschi Center, Sarah Efthymiou of the Public Law Center of Orange County, and Todd Hanson of the Orange County Community Foundation. Our presenter is Michael Olsen, the attorney specializing in AB5 issues for the Public Law Center.

California Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) extends employee classification status to gig workers. Companies must use a three-pronged test to prove workers are independent contractors, not employees. AB5 is designed to regulate companies that hire gig workers in large numbers, such as Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash but are making big waves with arts groups, truckers and many more. What does this law (and the supreme court decision behind it) mean to the social sector?
