50 Fires: Money and Meaning with Carl Richards

Talking about money is hard. All over the world, people are taught never to talk about money, politics, sex or religion in polite company. On 50 Fires: A Podcast About Money and Meaning from Executive Producers Chip and Joanna Gaines, host and financial conversationalist Carl Richards will remove money from that list by having frank, funny, and often difficult conversations about money – the kind we were all told not to have! – with guests from all walks of life. In each episode, Carl will invite a new guest to answer the question “What does money mean to you?” Their answers will reveal much more than their attitudes about money, spanning revelations about identity, community, faith, family and the true meaning of wealth.

Investing in Comedy with Gina Yashere Dec 06, 2023
    Show notes

Gina Yashere’s career in comedy is a result of sheer resilience, determination, and…budgeting. As a standup comedian and co-creator of Bob Hearts Abishola on CBS, she’s come a long way from her upbringing as a second generation Nigerian immigrant in London. Growing up, her mother essentially gave her two career options - doctor or engineer. After becoming an elevator technician and engineer in her early 20s, she decided that comedy would ultimately make her more money, albeit with a more winding and unpredictable path. She also opens up about her struggle with gambling and impulsive buying habits, how she overcame these challenges, and ultimately became more mindful about money, investing in properties, and aggressively saving for retirement.

A Culinary Path to Financial Independence with Chef Maneet Chauhan Nov 15, 2023
    Show notes

Chef Maneet Chauhan is best known as a judge on Chopped and as a fierce culinary competitor on Food Network shows like Iron Chef, Guy’s Grocery Games, and Beat Bobby Flay. As an immigrant to the United States, she also has a unique perspective on money. From her father's meticulous habit of recording expenses as a child to her own hard-earned lessons about financial independence after moving to America to attend the Culinary Institute of America, Maneet’s definition of ‘enough’ is constantly evolving as she pursues her craft as a chef and entrepreneur.

How Chip Gaines Uses Money As a Tool for Impact Nov 08, 2023
    Show notes

Most of us were first introduced to Chip Gaines on “Fixer Upper,” the blockbuster renovation show where he serves as genius contractor, adoring husband, and comic relief. But this episode of “50 Fires” reveals a different seen side of Chip–entrepreneurial, spiritual, philosophical, and reflective.

Carl and Chip discuss Chip’s unconventional attitude toward risk, using money as a tool for impact versus a measurement of success, the challenges of raising children in the Instagram era, and the fact that Jesus was a reckless financial planner (oh, and Chip’s wife Joanna even makes a surprise cameo).

Join host Carl Richards for an honest conversation about money and meaning with Chip Gaines on this week’s episode of 50 Fires.

Chasing The Muse with Lukas Nelson Nov 01, 2023
    Show notes

Carl goes deep on the realities of being a working musician with Singer Songwriter Lukas Nelson and festival organizer Ben Anderson. Recorded at the Park City Song Summit in September.

Carl’s conversation with Lukas Nelson unpacks how the allure of fame and money can be a trap for musicians, and how Lukas navigated finding his own artistic path, despite being the son of legendary artist Willie Nelson.

After the break, Carl speaks with Ben Anderson, a seasoned trial lawyer who grew up scraping the bottom of the middle class as a child in Tennessee, to achieve success as an attorney, who later joined the music industry by starting the Park City Song Summit, a multi-day music and wellness event designed to bring clarity and normalcy to the struggles that musicians, artists, and music lovers alike face around mental health and dependency. Carl and Ben discuss the need to prioritize well-being over success, and the need for a healthier approach to success in the music industry.

How Much Money Is Enough…For You? Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

Money: it’s a necessity, but sometimes it becomes an obsession. For Bryce Roberts, a venture capitalist who also happens to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, balancing faith, morality and financial success is a personal challenge.

On this episode, Carl asks Bryce to ponder the Devil's Golden Question: How much money is enough? They share their personal experiences growing up in the Mormon church, wrestling with cultural pressures around money specific to their faith, and ultimately recognizing that the most important things in life cannot be monetized.

This discussion is not just a theological exploration, but a personal reflection on lessons learned with money and how it shapes our views of life as a whole.

Making Space for Art (While Also Earning a Living) Oct 18, 2023
    Show notes

For many artists, the path to financial stability while pursuing creative passions is often winding and steep. Drawing from her rich experiences as a poet, professor and public intellectual, Carl’s guest Caroline Randall Williams offers unique insights into the subtle dynamics between education, wealth and social standing. She also shares her personal path to carving out space for creative fulfillment in a demanding professional environment.

This conversation also reveals a valuable lesson about the relativity of wealth perception. Caroline has existed on both ends of the wealth spectrum, from working as a teacher in rural Mississippi, to attending boarding school with students who had access to vast amounts of money and privilege. She candidly shares her experiences from both perspectives, as well as addresses the age-old question:

Who’s the more important artist? Shakespeare or Lil Wayne?
