    50% Facts

A podcast that examines how health, fitness, nutrition, mental health…even sex…are portrayed in popular culture, including movies and social media. And how those portrayals are sometimes distorted beyond recognition.

Veteran podcaster Jim McDonald hosts discussions with guests from the world of weights, fitness, and sometimes entertainment and sports. Jim is the owner of Third Street Barbell in Sacramento, CA.

Mike “Silent Mike” Farr appeared as co-host through mid-2025.

What was your first definition of “fitness?” | Topic Thunder Mini-episode Dec 17, 2021
    Show notes

We throw our minds back to our first ideas of what “fitness” meant when we were first exposed to it as kids. Was it gadgets like the Thighmaster? Was it Richard Simmons? Was it bodybuilding magazines in the supermarket? Oh, the nostalgia… Dean Saddoris of Caffeine & Kilos joined us in this discussion. King Richard | BioPic Review and Reaction Dec 16, 2021
    Show notes

We’re taking our first jump into scripted film territory. Will Smith stars as the father, and sometimes coach of, Venus and Serena Williams in this 2021 “definitely-not-a-documentary” biographical film. Does the film do justice to the amazing rise of the Williams sisters or is it mostly a Will Smith film awards-baiting vehicle? Is the film sending a message about overbearing “sports parents” or does it draw a line about future stars getting too much too soon? Is their success a triumph over racial boundaries? Was some amount of their suffering engineered by their father? How much dramatic license was taken here? We take a close look at this largely well-received film and try to sort out our feeling about the intent versus the execution. Dean Saddoris of Caffeine & Kilos joined us in this discussion. You can find Dean on IG @deansaddoris.ck and at caffeineandkilos.com. You can see this film at theaters and on HBOMax. ____ Check out our gym (Third Street Barbell) at ThirdStreetBarbell.com and subscribe for updates about our apparel line at 3sb.co! Should steroids be legal in sports? | Topic Thunder Mini-episode Dec 11, 2021
    Show notes

MLB’s Hall of Fame recently voted on a slate of potential inductees from baseball’s “steroid era.” The game benefited from the performance of these players. Specifically, they helped bring enthusiasm and crowd back to the sport after a bitter work stoppage. Is it hypocritical for baseball to deny them enshrinement in the hall? What about other sports? Do any of them really want to police steroid use or would they really rather just capitalize on the players’ improved performance? We discuss the question, should steroids just be legal in sports? This is definitely an opinion-based episode, so don’t hold us too much to account for our knowledge (or lack thereof) of specific testing protocols in specific sports. Is movement really the medicine? | Topic Thunder Mini-episode Dec 04, 2021
    Show notes

We recently (episode #155) accidentally posted the opening of an episode about chiropractors, stretching, and foam rolling with the body of an episode about fitness gimmick devices. Honest mistake, since they all fit into the broad category of interventions that you might decide to try as a lifter. Anyway, what we’re offering here is the episode about chiropractors, etc, that you haven’t heard paired with the intro you heard on episode #155. Immediately following is a repost of the body of episode #155 with its correct intro. It’ll all make more sense when you listen. Dean Saddoris of Caffeine & Kilos joined us in this discussion. How do you keep your head together while you’re getting your gainz back? | December Q & A Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

After some period of time away from the gym, how do you deal with the mental impact of being WAY off your PRs? Are meal replacements worth or it or a good idea? What have we learned that we didn’t know while making this show? What would we tell our younger selves if we had the chance? Is it a good time to start a gym? Is it normal to bleed from your butt after heavy squats? (Not the first time we’ve been asked this.) Our answers to these questions and more in this episode -- our first real Q & A in a while. The Commissioner of Power | Documentary Review and Reaction Nov 24, 2021
    Show notes

It’s fitting that Rogue Fitness would decide to underwrite an expansive documentary on the life of Terry Todd -- a name known to many in the strength world for decades. As a lifter and coach, he was a formative presence in Olympic lifting, powerlifting, and strongman. In many ways, he helped define the industry. The documentary details his contributions through interviews with Larry Pacifico, Mark Henry, Bill Crawford, Bill Crawford, as well as Terry’s wife Jan, a champion lifter in her own right, and Terry himself. Terry passed away in 2018. Dean Saddoris of Caffeine & Kilos joined us in this discussion. You can find Dean on IG @deansaddoris.ck and at caffeineandkilos.com. What do we hate to see in the gym? | Topic Thunder (Mini-episode) Nov 19, 2021

Is curling in the squat rack a huge break of gym etiquette or just a practical solution? Is loading the leg press up with every plate in the gym, five linebackers, and 7 cheerleaders a good move? Does training on an inflated half-sphere ever make sense? And is there a better drink holder than a reverse hyper?
