This is an ongoing process of knowing more and making adjustments along the way. And yes, your distaste of your current work will indeed lead to an earlier death.

I Wasn't Surviving - the Nelson Mandela story May 29, 2023

Nelson Mandela was put in prison at the age of 44 and was expected to die there.

When he was released from prison at the age or 72, he was asked how he survived all those years in prison.

His answer, "I wasn't surviving. I was preparing."

How do we respond when things aren't going as planned or you're "imprisoned?" Maybe we just need to reframe some of what we're going through.

Are you doing the same thing you were doing three years ago?… May 19, 2023

You may take pride in the fact that you've been at the same job for 18 years now. Is there more value in staying the same or are you missing new opportunities? Be careful about putting loyalty above growth. Be careful thinking you are strengthening the guarantee of your future by continuing to do what you've been doing in the past. Don't confuse commitment with stagnation.

Monty Roberts tells a story of a high school teacher who gave a writing assignment to share what you wanted to do when you grew up. Monty wrote that he wanted to own a ranch and raise thoroughbred horses. His teacher gave him an F and told him he would never make that dream a reality.

When the teacher gave him a chance to rewrite the paper for a higher grade, Monty said, "Keep your F, I'm keeping my dream."

Today, Monty has a 154-acre range with thoroughbred horses. He inspired the Robert Redford Movie, The Horse Whisperer.

I was exposed to The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale when I was 13 years old. The idea that we become what we think about and can control our minds really rocked my world.

Earl tells of a friend who made a terrible decision to hold up a liquor store and ended up killing the proprietor. He went to prison for life.

Earl checked in on his two boys (12 and 14 years old when he went to prison). One grew up to be a very successful businessman, a husband and a father. The other followed his father's path of addiction and went to prison for attempted murder.

When they were grown, he asked them both the same question: "Why did your life turn out this way?" To which they both gave the same answer, "How else could my life turn out having a father like that?"

Ultimately, the life we're living comes down to our own decisions, not our circumstances.
