Episode 159: People Pleasing Isn't Pleasing Anyone May 19, 2022
    Show notes

Most of us have a deep, biologic instinct to please other people. Not only does people pleasing feel necessary to maintain good relationships, sometimes we even think that it is altruistic and noble and good to put someone else's opinions, needs, and preferences above our own.

But the truth is that people pleasing creates resentful, inauthentic relationships that are based on pretending and lying. This not only creates tension between us and the people in our lives, it also erodes our relationship with ourselves.

So how do we reconcile the things we want with the things other people want from us? How do we honor our own needs while fulfilling our desire to help and serve others?

On today's podcast episode, I'm sharing why people pleasing keeps us from the loving, authentic relationships we want to have, how to overcome your need to people please, and how to prioritize to your own desires while still loving and caring for other people.

Episode 158: Make the Most of Your Life May 12, 2022
    Show notes

Our brain's number one job is to keep us alive. All the thoughts that it offers us day in and day out are meant to protect us in order to meet this objective. However, the very thoughts that our brain offers to keep us alive are also the very thoughts that can keep us from actually living the life we really want to live.

Over the past month, I've had some experiences that have reminded me again how lucky I am to have the chance to be alive and that the only thing that keeps me from boldly getting everything I want from that life are the fears and doubts of my own brain.

Today on the podcast, I am sharing three lessons I have learned over the past month that have given me a new appreciation for my life and a new perspective on where my brain is holding me back, to help you make the most of the earth life experience you have been given.

Episode 157: Meeting Your Own Needs as a Mom May 05, 2022
    Show notes

There probably isn't a job with more responsibility or higher expectations than motherhood. However, our thoughts about our responsibilities as a mom and whether or not we are meeting the expectations of the job can make mothering even harder.

What we sometimes forget is that we are mothering other humans. And those other humans get as much agency and choice as we do.

When we tangle our work and our results as parents with our children's choices, we can inadvertently put too much pressure on ourselves and our children and this can create strain and pain in our relationships.

In today's episode of the podcast, I help you see where you may be unknowingly delegating your validation, success, and happiness in motherhood to your children and how to think in a way that allows you to meet your own emotional needs so you can get more joy out of your sacred work as a mother.

Episode 156: Looking Unto Christ in Every Thought with Dennis Deaton Apr 28, 2022
    Show notes

Every human being struggles with thoughts and feelings of doubt and fear and discouragement and if you have listened to my podcast for any length of time you have heard me explain that this is because of the way our brains are biologically programmed. Noticing what's wrong with us is our brain's way of ensuring our survival.

However, this is just one way of looking at our experience with negative thoughts. On today's podcast, I interview my dad, Dennis Deaton, about his new book in which he offers the idea that our thoughts are actually coming from two opposing sources: from God and from the adversary. In our discussion, we talk about our different perspectives on the origin of our thoughts, the power in recognizing that we are not our thoughts, and the importance of overcoming our negative thoughts and choosing on purpose what we want to think so we can move forward in the face of fear, doubt and discouragement. Episode 155: God is Not Mad at You Apr 21, 2022
    Show notes

God and the grace he offers us is the biggest source of strength we have in challenging times, but most of us aren't accessing that strength and asking for his help because we think he's mad or disappointed or frustrated with us.

Nothing could be further from the truth and understanding God's infinite love and constant approval of you will change your relationship with him.

In today's podcast I'm sharing four ways to think about how God feels about you that will allow you to give up your shame and regret and turn to him for help and strength and confidence as you change and grow.

Episode 154: See the Wonder of Your Life Apr 14, 2022
    Show notes

Your brain's really good at seeing what's gone wrong. But that is only ever half of the story.

There is also a whole lot of wonder happening in your life right now and in today's podcast, I want to put all your attention on that.

Your life is a gift, exactly as it is, and no matter what's happening, no matter where we are or what reality we are living, there is always the wonder of growth, of choice, of creation, of starting over, and of love available to every one of us.

Chris Ballas wrote, "The goal of adulthood is to let go of the other possible existences and to make the best of the one. A successful adult is one who understands that it doesn't matter which life you ultimately pick, only that you live it well."

In today's episode I'm showing you how to embrace the wonder found in your one life so that you can live it the way you want to.

Episode 153: Playlist of Encouragement Apr 07, 2022
    Show notes

Your brain's number one job is to keep you alive and, for the most part it, does this by keeping you small and safe and doing things you've always done in the way you've always done them. Your brain has very little interest in you living your fullest, biggest, bravest life and so every time you go to change and grow and create more from your life, it's going to put up a lot of resistance.

The way we move forward anyway is by choosing thoughts that allow us to keep taking action even when our brain wants us to stop. And one of the most fun and powerful way to get these thoughts is through music.

In today's episode of the podcast, I'm sharing some of my favorite thoughts—thoughts that help me keep going when my brain wants to quit—that I found while listening to my favorite workout playlist. I hope they encourage you to keep going after all the things you want no matter what your brain says!

Episode 152: Change Your Mind, Change the Future Mar 31, 2022
    Show notes

The most powerful force in our lives is thought. Our thoughts have more constructive or destructive power than anything else in the world.

And our thoughts don't just change us. They change history. They change the world.

Sometimes we can get overwhelmed by how much we want to change in our lives and how many thoughts we have that are not serving us. But the truth is that thought is such a powerful force, that even changing one thought can create a ripple with exponential impact and significant, far-reaching consequences for ourselves and others.

You don't have to change every thought you have. But every thought you change will change your life. And it won't stop there. It will change the world around you as well.

In today's episode of the podcast, I'm inviting you to notice the thoughts that have created your current life. And then consider the power of changing your mind and the inevitable impact that choice will have on your future.

Episode 151: When You're Scared to Choose Coaching Mar 24, 2022
    Show notes

Even when we are ready to change our lives and we're sick and tired of being sick and tired and even when we've decided that coaching is the way we want to make those changes, our fear and anxiety can still keep us from signing up.

Because it turns out that just like anything else in our lives, our brains have thoughts about coaching. They have thoughts about us and whether we deserve coaching and whether we need coaching and whether it will really work for us. We have thoughts about the money and the time and the coach and the program.

All of these thoughts produce feelings—and if we feel scared or unsure about signing up for coaching, it's because these thoughts are making us feel bad enough to keep us from taking action.

This means that if you want to sign up for coaching these thoughts need to be examined and challenged.

In this episode of the podcast, I'm sharing the thoughts that can create fear for us when we want to choose coaching and how to question those thoughts so you can move forward and get the coaching you want anyway.

Episode 150: Counting on You Mar 17, 2022
    Show notes

Because our brains think approval from others is necessary for our survival, most of us are pretty good at meeting other people's expectations and not letting other people down.

However, when it comes to us and keeping our commitments to ourselves, it's a whole lot harder to count on us.

But having a rock-solid relationship with yourself and knowing that you can count on you is one of the best feelings in the world and it's the key to creating the life you want. Being able to count on you is a superpower.

Imagine what would happen in your life if you did everything you said you were going to do. Imagine what you could create if you knew that once you decided something, it was as good as done. What would be possible if you knew you would never give up no matter how hard it was? What if you knew you could always count on you?

In today's episode of the podcast, I'm sharing the skills you need to be able to count on yourself no matter what and use this superpower to get everything you want.
