A weekly podcast for teachers full of tips and tricks, stories and strategies, celebrations and struggles, all from the real life we are living every day. Welcome to This Teacher Life with Monica Genta.

iExploreScience: STEM in Elem

iExploreScience: STEM in Elem is for upper elementary teachers — especially grades 3–5 —who want to make elementary science and math more engaging, without adding more prep or overwhelm to their day. If you’re looking for practical ways to bring STEM and hands-on learning into your classroom while still meeting standards like NGSS, this podcast is for you.

Each week, you’ll get (ideally) short, (always!) actionable episodes (about 15–30 minutes) filled with classroom-tested ideas you can actually use. From simple STEM challenges and low-prep science activities to math routines, lab management, and neurodivergent-friendly strategies, everything is designed to help you keep students thinking, moving, and engaged—especially during the most challenging times of the year.

You’ll also hear honest reflections from real classroom experiences, with a focus on what works (and what doesn’t) in my 5th grade science and math classroom — no perfection required.

I’m Nicole, and I share practical, hands-on science and math ideas designed specifically for upper elementary teachers who want engaging, rigorous lessons without the overwhelm.

The Defiant Career | Career Strategy for Women in Medicine

The Defiant Career is a podcast about career strategy for women in medicine, hosted by Dr. Qaali Hussein, a double board-certified trauma surgeon and mother of six. It teaches women physicians how to advance their careers and navigate hostile workplace cultures without burning out.

For three years, I interviewed accomplished women on this show. Surgeons, founders, lawyers, executives. Different fields, different decades, different lives.

Every one of them had been handed the same advice: work twice as hard, prove yourself, earn your seat, and figure out the rest of your life on the side. Every one of them paid the same price. Burnout. Exhaustion. Health and relationships. No guarantee the success was even waiting at the end.

I know, because I am one of them. After 15 years of becoming a trauma surgeon, raising six children, and following every rule I was given, I nearly walked away from medicine in my first year as an attending.

That is not bad luck. When the same advice produces the same outcome across every field and every decade, it is not a personal failing. It is a strategy problem.

I call it the compliant strategy. It works exactly as designed. It just was not designed for you to win.

This show is about the alternative. I call it the Defiant Career Strategy, and it is what I built out of necessity the year I almost quit.

Every other week, I go deep on one decision the compliant strategy has been quietly making for you: when to speak up and how to survive it, what caregiving actually costs your career, how to advance inside a workplace culture that was never built for you, and why the burnout was never a discipline problem.

This is for women in medicine who are done being told to persevere. Women of color who have watched their specific challenges go unaddressed even in the rooms built to address them. Physician mothers who were promised the career and the flexibility and only ever got the career.

You cannot out-excel a system that was never built for you.
