Abuse of Power with David Rudolf and Sonya Pfeiffer

Abuse of Power is a podcast that identifies and discusses the various ways in which law enforcement and the justice system have victimized the very people they are supposed to protect: us.

Coerced confessions. Fabricated evidence. Arresting and prosecuting the innocent. While attention has rightfully been focused recently on police brutality in the street, the abuse of power in that context is only the tip of the iceberg. The problems are systemic. They spread beyond abuse in the street and pervade the entire criminal justice system. Award-winning journalist and criminal defense attorney, Sonya Pfeiffer, and her husband and law partner, David Rudolf, scrutinize this abuse by spotlighting ten cases across ten episodes in which law enforcement misconduct within the justice system resulted in the imprisonment of innocent people. Featuring exclusive interviews with those directly involved in each case – including defendants, lawyers, experts and family members – Sonya and David dive deep into each case, providing listeners with an overview of the abuse that occurred, while also highlighting the fallout and showcasing the untold stories of those impacted by the abuses of law enforcement within the criminal justice system.

Made to Fail

From healthcare, to unemployment insurance, to exercising the right to vote, the COVID-19 crisis has affected every part of American life. The rampant employment. The social unrest in American cities. It's pulled back the curtain on the policies that time and time again, have failed the people they were supposed to protect. But what's happening in our country is something much bigger than a pandemic. Something that's been in the works for a long, long time.

Made to Fail tells the stories of Americans in states across the country, and the ways in which our country has left our institutions gutted, corrupted, and unaccountable. As we confront an unprecedented era of economic uncertainty, amidst a health crisis and a national reckoning on race the question is...how do we find a way out?

Busy Philipps is Doing Her Best

It's me, your friend Busy Philipps! My creative partner Caissie St. Onge & I love making things that we believe people need & will love & we’ve had so many plans. We had plans to do a TV show that would shake up late night! And we think it kinda did! For six months. We adored our genius, scrappy creative team at “Busy Tonight” as much as we loved our audience, so when we broke the news that we’d been canceled, we vowed to get back up & make even bigger plans to invent a whole new way of doing things in the entertainment biz, to reunite our beautiful staff & change the game for everyone! An entertainment Utopia! And we were so close, then...the world changed. Now those plans are, at the very least, on hold. So, we've shifted gears, like everyone has had to, & with our friends, we're just doing our best, taking it slow & talking to fascinating friends about how *they* are doing *their* best. They’ll tell us all about those times in their lives when a setback actually led to the right thing. Maybe it was a job that didn't pan out, but opened the door to an even more perfect one, or maybe it's how they studied for years to do the thing they thought was their calling, only to fall into something else that felt like kismet. The thing is, we want to share those moments because right now EVERYBODY is having one of those moments. Maybe we'll all learn something life-changing or maybe we'll just have a conversation where we break down in tears, then laugh at ourselves for crying. Whatever happens, we can assure you, Busy Philipps is Doing Her Best!

The Binge Cases: What She Buried

Seven years ago, journalist Justine van der Leun received a letter that would change her life. The sender was a woman named Kwaneta Harris, who was incarcerated at a prison in Texas. Kwaneta had an incredible story—one that, over time, she began to tell Justine.   Justine wanted to know more, and began to report deeply. Kwaneta’s story turned out to be more complicated, tangled, and murky than Justine could have ever imagined.   Bad checks are cashed. Fibs turn into lies turn into scams. A mysterious man wrapped in bandages signs binding legal documents. At one point, a young mother walks into a courthouse in Dallas and confesses to a murder she did not commit. None of it is real, or maybe all of it is. And somehow at every twist, behind every bizarre story, Justine kept finding her way back to one person: Kwaneta.   - For more of Justine’s work, read Unreasonable Women, which follows three women who have been punished for defending themselves. The result of seven years of reporting inside U.S. prisons, it's a gripping, urgent look at how survivors are criminalized, called "required reading for anyone who cares about women and justice," by Bookpage, "remarkable... riveting," by Kirkus, and "true crime at its finest," by Booklist. Available now on Amazon or Bookshop.org.  - From serial killer nurses to psychic scammers – The Binge is your home for true crime stories that pull you in and never let go.   Hit ‘Subscribe’ at the top of The Binge Crimes show page on Apple Podcasts or visit GetTheBinge.com.  Follow The Binge Crimes and The Binge Cases to get new stories on the first of the month, every month.    Join The Binge’s free newsletter – Patreon.com/TheBinge  The Binge – feed your true crime obsession.  Read More
