Overpriced JPEGs – Carly Reilly & Bankless

Overpriced JPEGs is a show about NFTs and the Metaverse! Most people think they’re bad art and everyone else can’t stop talking, thinking, and buying them. They’re non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and they’re taking over your Twitter feed. The blockchain space is moving too fast to keep track of everything that’s happening. Join Carly Reilly, Andrew Yang’s former finance director, for the Overpriced JPEGs podcast from the Bankless network. This is the best way to get the latest NFT and metaverse news and interviews with the people shaping our future, so you can decide for yourself if these are just overpriced JPEGs or technology that will change the world. But there is a darker side to St. Tammany and that darkness ultimately consumed Margaret Coon. Like a Virgin

A new pop culture podcast with a mix of news, cultural criticism, and comedy through a queer-trans lens, hosted by Fran Tirado and Rose Dommu. Though they are best friends now, Fran and Rose grew up very differently. Fran was a cult-ish, sheltered Christian camp counselor and Rose had a penchant for writing deranged fanfiction. Now they’re both godless heathens taking a look back at the formative classics that popped their cherries and made them who they are. Each week, the show starts off with a breakdown of the week’s pop culture news, then does a deep dive into one cultural object that one of them might be experiencing for the first time. They’ll also invite writers, comedians, activists, and entertainers to help them break it down.  Follow @rosedommu and @fransquishco on Instagram and Twitter. Read More

The Mayor of Maple Ave

September 2018, 26-year-old Shawn Sinisi landed at the Pittsburgh Airport after a late-night flight from Arizona. No one was there to pick him up — he was alone with a simple suitcase of belongings, having been abruptly kicked out of one of the top drug rehab facilities in the country. He was supposed to be recovering from an addiction that had consumed most of his young life. Instead, he hit the streets to score then walked into a McDonald’s bathroom and dialed a friend to talk him through his misery while he shot a needle into his arm. She remembers his voice trailing off. The dope was laced with fentanyl. That night, Shawn became the first known and documented victim of Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse to die. Most of the last decade has been about accurately recognizing and dealing with sexual abuse — bringing it to light, and holding people accountable. What’s missing is treating those who are struggling with the effects. As a society, we talk about drug abuse and we talk about sexual abuse, but often those are in silos – separated from one another. Shawn’s story brings both together and highlights the complexities of this trauma and the system failures that are not being addressed. Read More

Hooked

When Tony Hathaway was arrested outside a Seattle bank in February 2014, it brought an end to one of the most prolific bank robbery streaks in American history. Hathaway robbed 30 banks in a single year, all within a 30-mile radius of his suburban home. But that’s not the most surprising part of this story. Before Hathaway was a masterful bank robber—a shape-shifting professional who confounded multiple police departments and the FBI—he was a top design engineer at Boeing, one of America’s most important companies. Hathaway traveled the world in business class, working on the 747, while hiding a gigantic secret: an OxyContin addiction that ultimately unraveled his life. Based on three years of conversations between Hathaway and journalist Josh Dean, Hooked is a different kind of crime story that takes listeners on an exceptional and very personal tour of America’s opioid epidemic.

New Episodes on Wednesdays.

Operator

During the 1-900 number craze of the Nineties, one company provided the vast majority of phone sex. American Telnet was an empire founded by the man who called himself “The Telephone Pimp.” He ran the company “like General Motors” and got filthy rich doing it. But for the (mostly) women who answered the calls and delivered fantasies 24-7, it was a different story. The powerful stigma against sex work was always lurking just beneath the surface, until it threatened to tear apart the whole company. Hosted by Tina Horn (Why Are People Into That?), OPERATOR is an eight-part series about big ambitions, Shakespearean-level corporate backstabbing, men and women at the cutting edge of a technological revolution...and on the front lines of a sexual one.
