Full PreFrontal: Exposing the Mysteries of Executive Function

Welcome to the podcast,
Full PreFrontal: Exposing the Mysteries of Executive Function hosted by Sucheta Kamath.

Executive Function is a core set of cognitive skills that allow humans to focus attention, block out distractions, plan ahead, stay engaged, temper emotions, and think flexibly while creatively solving problems to fulfill personal and social goals. The prefrontal cortex region of the brain, which governs Executive Function, is often compared to an air traffic control system at a busy airport. Much like an air traffic controller guides planes on different flight paths in the direction that each needs to go, the prefrontal cortex intercepts thoughts and impulses in order to direct them towards situationally appropriate and productive outcomes that serve the need of the future self.

Significant research in the field suggests that developing strong Executive Function is critical for school-aged children and remains one of the most reliable predictors of overall success, shown to have profound life-long implications beyond the formal years of learning. On this podcast, host Sucheta Kamath will converse with neuroscientists, social psychologists, learning experts, and thought leaders who will illustrate how Executive Function is inextricably linked with mental health, physical health, school readiness, job success, marital relationships, and much more.

On the path of self-development, we all experience a constant struggle between trying to optimize our talent and effort while still facing difficulty in mobilizing the inner tools and strategies that can lead us in the right direction. Tune in to
Full PreFrontal
to figure out how best to manage your thoughts, habits, and attitudes to enhance your self-awareness and future thinking and to achieve your best self.

Sucheta Kamath is an award-winning speech-language pathologist, a TEDx speaker, a celebrated community leader, and the founder and CEO of ExQ®. As an EdTech entrepreneur, Sucheta has designed a personalized digital learning curriculum/tool (ExQ®) that empowers middle and high school students to develop self-awareness and strategic thinking skills through the mastery of Executive Function and social-emotional competence. Outside of her business, Sucheta previously served as President of the Georgia Speech-Language-Hearing Association, where she started a free Social-Communication and Executive Function Training program for inner-city men afflicted with addiction and homelessness—a program she continues to oversee as a coach and a trainer today. She is also a long-time meditator and is currently working on her Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification. A firm believer in the “Pause, Reflect, and then Respond” philosophy, Sucheta hopes to spread the word on how every person can reach higher levels of self-awareness and achieve lasting growth of their Executive Function.

Tell Me More with Nicole Walters

Opinions are easy, understanding takes work. What if everything you think you know about “those people”… is wrong?

Welcome to Tell Me More with Nicole Walters - the unfiltered, judgment-free zone where curiosity leads and honest conversations follow.

In a world shaped by echo chambers and algorithms, it’s easy to form opinions about people we’ve never actually met. The sugar baby. The trans woman. The undocumented immigrant. The reality TV star. We’ve heard about them but have we ever heard from them?

That’s what this show is all about.

Born out of Nicole’s 2020 Tough Talk Series, Tell Me More is a space where we refuse to make the world smaller and scarier. There’s no room for hate, racism, or bigotry here—but there’s plenty of room for bold, uncomfortable, and deeply human conversations.

Each week, Nicole sits down with the people you’re most curious about and asks the questions you’ve been too afraid (or too filtered) to ask. It’s raw. It’s candid. It’s not about changing your mind - it’s about giving you the real story so you can make up your own.

You’ll also hear updates on Nicole’s life, business, and family but at its core, this show is a place to listen well, grow together, and build confidence in your own character.

So if you’re ready to break out of your bubble, challenge your assumptions, and hear directly from the source…

This is the podcast you’ve been waiting for.

PSYC 213: Abnormal Psychology (DSM-IV-TR Edition) – David R Bailey

UPDATE: This Abnormal Psychology course uses the diagnostic criteria presented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) published by the American Psychiatric Association in 2000. In May 2013, the APA released a new edition, the DSM-5 which has significantly impacted the multiaxial system presented in this series and has significantly impacted some of the diagnostic categories and diagnoses. An updated podcast series based on the new DSM-5 were made available in Spring 2020. This course is intended to provide a survey of theories and etiology of abnormal behavior and its social significance; description of symptoms; consideration of techniques of therapy and theories of prevention. The material in this series related to mental health diagnoses is based on the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision which was published in 2000. The podcasts presented in this series will include live class recordings of lecture presentations and additional pre-recorded segments that focus on frequently asked questions and concepts that often provide a challenge for many students. These recordings may also be supplemented by PDF files or handouts designed to further enhance the student’s understanding of the field of abnormal psychology. These materials are intended to supplement the traditional classroom approach of my courses and to enhance the student’s learning experience. Target audience should include current students and others who wish to know more about the topic areas. The materials will not be textbook specific so that they will be useful to others. For HACC students, the purpose is to allow them an opportunity to review or catch up on lectures/class periods that they may have missed or misunderstood. For other learners outside of HACC, the purpose is to supply another resource for their learning that is both entertaining and educational. The course was originally recorded during the Fall Semester 2010 with some updates as necessary. Please send any suggestions/feedback to drbailey@hacc.edu. I hope you enjoy listening and thanks for exploring the world of abnormal psychology with me. Read More

Modern Physics: Quantum Mechanics (Winter 2012) – Leonard Susskind

Quantum theory governs the universe at its most basic level. In the first half of the 20th century physics was turned on its head by the radical discoveries of Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and Erwin Schroedinger. An entire new logical and mathematical foundation—quantum mechanics—eventually replaced classical physics. We will explore the quantum world, including the particle theory of light, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and the Schroedinger Equation. This course is the second of a six-quarter sequence of courses that explores the essential theoretical foundations of modern physics. The topics to be covered include quantum mechanics, the general and special theories of relativity, electromagnetism, cosmology, and black holes. While these courses build upon one another, each course can be taken independently as well. Both individually and collectively they will let students attain the “theoretical minimum” for thinking intelligently about modern physics. This course is presented by the Stanford Continuing Studies Program. Read More
