The Middle School Mary Poppins Podcast

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL MARY POPPINS PODCAST™

The #1-charting podcast about the wonderfully complicated years between childhood and adolescence.

Hosted by educator, educational technology specialist, and licensed social worker Suzanne M. Swain, EdS, LMSW, The Middle School Mary Poppins Podcast™ has grown into an internationally listened-to platform for families, educators, counselors, and everyone helping young people navigate the middle.

With more than 900,000 lifetime plays and downloads, 48,000+ Spotify followers, 8,000+ Spotify ratings with a 5.0-star rating, listeners in 135+ countries, and repeated #1 placements on Apple Podcasts—including #1 chart positions in Parenting and Kids & Family—MSMP™ has become a growing voice in the conversation about middle school development.

But the numbers aren't the reason this show exists. The kids are.

STOP. REGULATE. LISTEN.
Middle school isn't simply an academic transition. It is a neurological, emotional, social, technological, and identity transition.

MSMP™ explores what is happening underneath young people's behavior—and what the adults who love, teach, counsel, and care for them can do next.

Episodes combine developmental science, educational practice, mental-health perspectives, neuroscience, technology, humor, storytelling, and more than two decades of experience working with young people.

Topics include emotional regulation, executive functioning, critical thinking, anxiety, friendships, bullying, identity, resilience, motivation, school success, family communication, creativity, digital citizenship, social media, artificial intelligence, gaming, screen use, and the rapidly changing adolescent brain.

NEURODIVERGENT BRAINS BELONG HERE

Neurodiversity isn't an occasional topic on MSMP™. It is part of the way we understand young people.

The show regularly explores autism, ADHD, giftedness, twice-exceptionality, sensory needs, masking, executive-function differences, emotional intensity, communication differences, accommodations, regulation, and what happens when a child's brain doesn't fit neatly into the environment adults have created for them.

Instead of beginning with:

“How do we stop this behavior?”

MSMP™ begins with: “What is happening underneath this behavior—and what does this young person need next?”

Looking for something a little softer at the end of the day? Check out Bedtime Stories for Middle School Hearts, a new Middle School Mary Poppins storytelling podcast filled with cozy mysteries, gentle adventures, familiar animal friends, and just a little bit of magic. It’s made for tweens, teens, families, and anyone who still loves being read to before bed. Just for tweens & teens.

EDUCATION + TECHNOLOGY + MENTAL HEALTH

Suzanne began her career with an unusual long-term plan: experience education from as many perspectives as possible before trying to tell anyone how schools should work.

That meant teaching. Libraries. Curriculum. School administration. Higher education. Educational technology. And eventually mental health.

Her Educational Specialist degree in Educational Technology informs one of MSMP's continuing conversations: what technology is doing FOR young people, what it may be doing TO them, and how adults can help adolescents develop healthy relationships with screens, social media, artificial intelligence, gaming, information, and emerging technologies.

After decades in education, Suzanne returned to graduate school for social work and became a Licensed Master Social Worker because mental health cannot be separated from learning, relationships, behavior, or healthy adolescent development.

A FREE PUBLIC DISSERTATION

Suzanne sometimes calls The Middle School Mary Poppins Podcast™ her “free public dissertation.”

The idea began taking shape in her early twenties: spend a career learning about young people from different corners of education and then bring those perspectives together somewhere useful.

MSMP™ is that somewhere.

Rather than examining adolescence through one professional lens, the show brings together lessons from teaching, school leadership, librarianship, curriculum, educational technology, higher education, mental health, research—and, most importantly, years spent listening to kids.

The goal isn't perfect children.

It isn't perfect parenting.

And it certainly isn't perfect teaching.

It's helping adults become more curious about the young people standing in front of them and helping those young people become competent, capable, connected human beings.

Research matters here.

Relationships matter.

Humor matters.

And ridiculous joy matters.

Previa Alliance Podcast

There are few experiences as universal to human existence as pregnancy and childbirth, and yet its most difficult parts — perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) — are still dealt with in the shadows, shrouded in stigma. The fact is 1 in 5 new and expecting birthing people will experience a PMAD, yet among those who do many are afraid to talk about it, some are not even aware they’re experiencing one, and others don’t know where to turn for help. The fact is, when someone suffers from a maternal mental health disorder it affects not only them, their babies, partners, and families - it impacts our communities.

In the Previa Alliance Podcast series, Sarah Parkhurst and Whitney Gay are giving air to a vastly untapped topic by creating a space for their guests —  including survivors of PMADs and healthcare professionals in maternal mental health —  to share their experiences and expertise openly. And in doing so, Sarah and Whitney make it easy to dig deep and get real about the facts of perinatal mental health, fostering discussions about the raw realities of motherhood. Not only will Previa Alliance Podcast listeners walk away from each episode with a sense of belonging, they’ll also be armed with evidence-based tools for healing, coping mechanisms, and the language to identify the signs and symptoms of PMADs — the necessary first steps in a path to treatment. The Previa Alliance Podcast series is intended for anyone considering pregnancy, currently pregnant, and postpartum as well as the families and communities who support them.

Sarah Parkhurst

Previa Alliance Podcast Co-host; Founder & CEO of Previa Alliance

A postpartum depression survivor and mom to two boys, Sarah is on a mission to destigmatize the experiences of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), and to educate the world on the complex reality of being a mom. Sarah has been working tirelessly to bring to light the experiences of women who have not only suffered a maternal mental health crisis but who have survived it and rebuilt their lives. By empowering women to share their own experiences, by sharing expert advice and trusted resources, and by advocating for health care providers and employers to provide support for these women and their families, Sarah believes as a society we can  minimize the impact of the current maternal mental health crisis, while staving off future ones.

Whitney Gay

Previa Alliance Podcast Co-host;  licensed clinician and therapist

For the past ten years, Whitney has been committed to helping women heal from the trauma of a postpartum mental health crisis as well as process the grief of a miscarriage or the loss of a baby. She believes that the power of compassion paired with developing critical coping skills helps moms to heal, rebuild, and eventually thrive. In the Previa Alliance Podcast series, Whitney not only shares her professional expertise, but also her own personal experiences of motherhood and recovery from grief.

Curious Kids Every Day: A Daily Educational Podcast

We answer a curious question every single day! Do you have a curious kid who asks you a million questions every day? Curious Kids Every Day is an intentionally slow paced and interactive daily podcast for kids AND their parents! My goal is to make learning fun for the whole family. My name is Josh. I am a dad of 4 who loves to learn and teach. I am grateful for all of the families who make Curious Kids Every Day a part of their daily routine. I have noticed that most children's shows these days (even the educational ones) are so loud, fast, and dumbed down. I guess they've always been that way to a degree, but it is definitely worse now than when I was a kid. This show is meant to reclaim a little bit of the sincerity and intentionality of the best of children's programming. Specifically, I am inspired by Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and Blue's Clues. I like how those shows are slow paced, how they talk directly to the kids, and how they respect the listener's intelligence. I intend for Curious Kids Every Day to do the same thing. Basically, I am making the kind of show that I want my kids to enjoy. Give this show a shot and watch how engaged your kid gets! I was amazed the first time that I played it for my kids. Audio has a unique ability to capture the imagination in a way that screens just cannot. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope that your family enjoys Curious Kids Every Day!
